FYI; There is a Titan Comic called The Four Doctors where a machine teleports the 10th, 11th, and 12th Doctors each to an alternate timeline that was identical to theirs, up until 1 moment- The most important decision of each incarnation's life. And for the 10th Doctor, this worse case timeline for him, is one in which he leaves Wilfred to die in that glass vault.

Capaldi's breaks me. His final conversation with The Testimony is pure *Who* "Can't I ever have peace... Can't I rest." That breaks me every time because it feels like a complete arc from the start of Nu Who; instead of trying to beat the villain even if people die, he's weary, tired and the last man standing out of all of his friends. He just wants it to be over with. But of course he chooses not to, and that's the purity of the Doctor wrapped into one twenty minute segment. God I fucking miss Peter.

I think Martha and Mickey getting together is supposed to represent the two rejected lovers finding solace in each other. Mickey was rejected by Rose in favour of the Doctor. @Warriorette12 Why do people feel the need to make it about race? That scene was filmed before Torchwood series 3 was, which Martha and Mickey were supposed to be apart of but it never happened because of the actors' filming commitments. So had the original plan gone ahead, we would have had a whole series of them interacting in Torchwood, presumably in a romantic sense, leading into them being married by The End of Time pt 2. So it was really due to filming scenes out of chronology as opposed to bad writing.

I would've actually preferred that much more ( also setting a darker and more inhumane tone for the 5th season), as that one was already the age of a great-grandfather and would've died soon either way... David's Doctor could've done so much more on Doctor Who, but I guess following the announcement of his departure (I still don't get why he gave up the dream role he always wanted his whole life, even Moffat tried to convince him to stay) they used the sacrifice for a random old man as a plot device to kill off the tenth doctor...

Daaaaamn I've never thought of it like that. I knew it took place "after" Children of Earth but I never considered the proximity. Now that forlorn look on Jack's face at the beginning of the scene makes so much more sense! It's easy to dismiss that scene as a cheeky sexual set up when compared to the previous two scenes where the Doctor literally saves people's lives. But I suppose he's doing the same thing here, saving Jack from his misery by finding him a companion (or at least a temporary distraction).

Possibly, but I think they did enough interesting stuff with the Doctor's loneliness after all his companions departing and his subsequent tragic fall in Waters of Mars that it made stretching it out worthwhile. Besides, it would have distracted from Donna's departure and the integration of all the spin-off and returning characters would have probably distracted from the story of the regeneration. Would have required fairly substantive changes to the story, with the loss of the main cliffhanger from Part 1 to avoid making the actual regeneration look cheap.

I'm glad you spent so much time on the part with the Doctor and Wilf on the ship with the gun, but I'm surprised you didn't talk about the absolute gut punch at the end of it. When the Doctor talks about the Time Lords and Wilf thinks they sound so wonderful, and the Doctor says that how he chooses to remember them, as they were, not what they had become from the Time War, and then after that huge emotional scene where the Doctor wont take the gun to kill the Master, he wont even hold it, he wont break his morals to save his own life. And then when the Master reveal the White Point Star, that the Time Lords are returning, without a moment of hesitation, the Doctor grabs the gun from Wilf's hands. This single action of show don't tell reveals just how terrifying the Time Lords have become.

It's sad. But there's lots of stuff I'm not keen on. Mainly the Vinvocci. However, I love the Master in this, despite being weird by Master standards, and the Time Lords being who I always imagined them to be. War-hungry, power-mad nutters. I also love the Doctor-Wilf stuff. End of an Era. It'll possibly, probably never be as good again.

The book signing is the saddest part of the entire series. Don't even come at me. The regret that he shows and the woman being in absolute disbelief when she's writing and then stops and looks up... it's very powerful acting. The woman might not know the true feelings, but Davids face shows how hard it was for not only him but the woman he loved.

The End of Time in my opinion is without a doubt the greatest regeneration story of all time. It is so grand and epic in its scale (The Master! The Time Lords! Gallifrey emerging into the Earth's atmosphere!), and has so many memorable scenes, such as the one where the Doctor tells Wilf that the human race look like 'giants' to him, or the Doctor contemplating whether to shoot the Master or Rassilon with the gun. I remember feeling so upset as a 14 year old kid when David Tennant regenerated. He was and always will be my Doctor.

My biggest problem with this episode is that its strongest moments (Because lets be honest, the plot and resolution has a great deal of that RTD 'I spent the entire episode building up this resolution and now have about a minute to fit in a Deus Ex Machina ending whilst the Villains sit around twiddling their thumbs and let the Doctor do what the Doctor needs to do) are the build up to and the actual regeneration... Which I have become less fond of with time. Not because its bad, like I said, by far the strongest moments, but because I think it makes the one big mistake a regeneration episode should never do. It seems to go out of its way to make you almost bitter towards the new incarnation for replacing the old one. Sure, a regeneration episode should be melancholy. Its a sad occasion... But its also a new beginning. The whole 'It feels like dying, I die, and a new man goes walking off' and 'I don't want to go' (Along with all the rest of Tenths angst) may perfectly suit the Tenth Incarnation (As Eleven put it, 'I had vanity issues at the time'), but its just too much negativity towards the idea of a new Doctor coming along, and is my opinion one of the big reasons so many people say they left the show at Ten (Despite the impressive fact that viewing figures held up throughout a good chunk of Moffat's run). Tenths regeneration simply left people bitter towards the idea of a new Doctor. Elevenths does this the best, because it fully embraces the sadness of the regeneration, the end of an era, but the writing doesn't become bitter about it: 'We all change, when you think about it, we are all different people, all throughout our lives. And thats ok, thats good. You got to keep moving, so long as you remember all the people who you used to be. I will not forget one line of this, not one day, I swear. I will always remember, when the Doctor Was Me' Now sure, that more suits Elevens personality, his incarnation was around for over a thousand years after all, we know he spent three centuries on and off with the Ponds, and spends around 900 years expecting and coming to terms with his death on Trenzalore. Its understandable why he would be more ready to regenerate from a character perspective... But in my opinion its just a healthier approach for the show overall. Regeneration episodes should embrace the sadness, but still make people excited for a new era, instead of leaving a bitter taste in the mouth towards the new Doctor who could all to easily be seen as the 'Killer' of the current incarnation.

Not quite sure what's difficult to understand about the 'End of time' title. It's explained several times by Rassilon and others that the Timelords plan to destroy/end all time/creation. Just so happens that it's the end of 10's time too. Also I can't believe that you just basically skipped over the cafe scene with Wilf and the doctor. One of the best scenes in all of doctor who and a great pay off for wilf and their relationship

@jvblhc
@jvblhc 4 жыл бұрын
I found both parts rather tedious though the second part had some excellent moments. But it felt like either Davies thought he has making the most amazing episode ever or he was just in a rush to get it all over with. As for Martha and Mickey looking sad when they see The Doctor: they know this man, they know the look on his face, they know instinctively that they will never see him again. They may not know why, but they know. Some people hate it, but I always loved The Doctor going around to see his friends and companions one more time (and in a Sarah Jane Adventure, it is revealed that he did the same goodbye trip with all the companions he had ever had). Knowing that I would (probably) never see Martha, Mickey, Rose, Wilf, and other ever again, I sit through those last moments with a sad smile on my face. In conclusion, The End of Time was not every good, but, as you say, there are some amazing scenes. P.S. Timothy Dalton would have been a superb Rassilon.

I personally agree with most of your points although about the gun part the doctor has killed people via shooting them to death before (see day of the Daleks or Colin baker killing the cyber controller in his era). Also another thing I had a problem with was with how he complained about dying and going on a fairly long fare well tour (which big finish did an excellent job with in an adventure crossover between 10 and 4 where 4 tells ten that the mere fact that tens there shows he’s long dead and he just continues on showing how the classic doctors were always at peace when they died, see caves of androzani for a truly excellent regen story).

@@tomanderson4953 I believe the quote you're looking for is "they stand as monuments to their shame, like the Weeping Angels of old". I'm not a fan of this "The Weeping Angels were once Time Lords" theory. I don't understand why they need an origin story, they're just some other species.
