I’m a JSU alumni & I was there. JSU was the most exciting band in the entire parade. They stole the show. What nobody is mentioning is that, in the parade JSU was right behind the President of the Tournament of Roses vehicle (float). That was strategic. He wasn’t bent out of shape about it so why are others? People are going overboard for nothing. The biggest gap in the parade was a broken down float that had to be towed by a wrecker throughout the entire parade route. We thought the parade was over but it wasn’t. People had started exiting the bleachers & they had to tell them to remain seated. So, that pause for JSU was nothing. If anything I think JSU highlighted how they should allow bands to showcase themselves during the parade. Besides, I think it was the expectation. The crowd loved it! The commentators loved it! It’s only the critics attempting to dull JSU’s shine that have something to say. However, controversy draws attention… but anyway, fabulous performance & we’re moving on! Peace!

The did amazing and the people loved it, however, the problem is it was not approved. The reason why this is important is because if this is allowed without approval then to be fair the same rules would have to apply to the other parade participants which would eventually lead to several other participants also wanting to put on a show for the main audience, thus, making the parade likely 2-3x's longer for all those that want to pause the forward progression in order to perform.

Maybe they didn't 'mess it up' for HBCUs, but perhaps underscored that these universities practice these kinds of things that are a part of the culture, therefore facilitators of the parade should expect it and integrate it into their time schedules. Norfolk State stopped for like 5 minutes.
@ejtaylor7314 күн бұрын
I think you are overlooking that the parade is NATIONALLY televised and required to be kept on a strict schedule so that ALL of the bands get to show what they can do. They know the corner is where the press box is and they will be televised there, plan an eye catching routine for that spot while continuing to move forward so everyone gets a chance to be seen. When the time scheduled for broadcasting is up, it's off the air, and any bands near the end don't get their day on t.v. any more. If they make an exception for one band, they need to make it for ALL and they don't have the time for that in the Rose Parade.
@Still_I_Ride14 күн бұрын
@@ejtaylor73 I'm not suggesting an exception, I'm talking about integrating this into the timeframe.
@ejtaylor7314 күн бұрын
@@Still_I_Ride They would have to increase the broadcasting time, and air time costs money. The more they spend on air time the less they can spend on bands to even be there. I do agree bands should get more notariety there, it's such a prestigious honor to be invited, just to be seen for 30 seconds, doesn't seem very prestigious. But in order to give it to them, they would have to lower the number of bands in the parade. It is the Rose Parade too, it's all about the floats (Not for me, I only watch for the bands). I think once a band is selected (They're selected over a year in advance), they could ask to stop and do a SHORT performance, so it can be worked into the schedule well in advance, and if other bands didn't ask, it's their own fault they didn't get to. Maybe they should start broadcasting Bandfest where the bands do have the time to get out and show off all they can do. I still think JSU was great, even if they caused a bit of controversy for it, but what doesn't cause controversy now-a-days, everyone gets offended by everything, so let them, and let JSU go out and show their hard work and dedication to entertaining their audience. You have a great day Bud.

There were 4 DMs when I originally joined the BOOM. I have to go back and see how many there were when I first started watching the band in high school. They claim that only certain bands are supposed to stop. They say NSU was approved to stop and be observed. The white tux lady looked kind of crazy having to speed up LOL. It's funny they wanted to close the gap, when parades always have a point where you almost stop and you lose the gaps.We all watched this parade on TV. No one thought anything seemed off schedule with the game. Technically the band was already stopped at that point. There are always points in a parade where you're not moving forward. You saw the white tuxes stop them. They just tried to squeeze as much as possible in the little time they had. Maybe they went over a little, but they got it all back in sync

@@domhur and Norfolk had a whole production, i think the difference was the line up tho, they had the Legion after that country chick performed, they stopped the parade for her and the Legion took advantage of it and did a whole spirit mix, they set if ya ask me

Norfolk State was asked to perform in front of the grandstand. Performance was timed for about 10 mins. and practiced several weeks before the parade. There are clips of NSU practicing for the grandstand performance. While NSU performed in front of second grandstand, a singer performed in front of first grandstand. Everyone was in sync.

@@leoncarter7798 You jumped on THEE I LOVE’s vid talking about what another school’s PREVIOUS performance WAS NOT the topic of discussion only to prove what? If it’s too much for you to congratulate instead of “slick” hate, just stfu. As if “we” don’t face enough hate from people who don’t look like us only to get the brunt of it from people who do…. 🤦🏾♀️

Just a theory; all the past HBCU bands since 2016 have performed in front of that very press box.

How many of them asked for permission and were given the opportunity because it could be worked into the schedule and not just decide to do it on their own.

@@ejtaylor73 True. Cause when I went back I saw that Albany performed at a different press box

Two HBCUs that I remember doing the Rose the same year was FAMU and Alabama State University. I was there in the Orange and Green section.

So there's never been more than one HBCU band at this parade.The first was Mississippi Valley State in 1965.

Im quite sure they will be back. The ratings were higher and conversations were had because of them. I’m happy they finished what they started. you’re right it would have been a disaster, and they would’ve been laughed at through out the land. Kudos to JSU director for ignoring the call. finishing what you start, Pay the price later. 💙💙💙 it was magnificent.💙💙💙💯

Yes, it was impromptu, but Dr. Little, the Director of Bands stated that the president of the Tournament of Roses parade sent him a message saying “You guys were the best band there;” that he had never had this much praise being song about a band since he has been affiliated with the parade. So it all worked out….

Most bands should’ve been doing this. The floats should just keep going but the Bands should stop and showcase.

Maybe after this - since the crowd LOVED it - they may change their formula for the parade.
@ejtaylor7314 күн бұрын
@@linedanzer4302 Wouldn't count on it. It's nationally televised, the longer it's on air the more money it costs. If they're spending their entire budget on air time, they're not going to be able to afford to have any bands in the parade.
@dcaggie10115 күн бұрын
They still did an amazing job regardless … The parade folks love every HBCU band that comes so that’s nothing new. It’s time to let the issue rest…We’ll see in the years to come if this will have a negative affect on other HBCUs
