As a retired grammar teacher, I appreciated the references and explanations you made. On the other hand, a pet peeve of this retiree is the extra s and syllable on possessives. The simple rule is... If it does not end in s, add an apostrophe s. ('s) If it ends in s, ad an apostrophe. ( ' ) Jesus' rather than the extra syllabled Jesus's. Not being critical, just offering a quick, easy lesson on possessives. Really good teaching here regarding the Mark 7 proof text of those who don't wanna follow the Commands with common sense. Thank you for what you do!

And to clear up Paul’s writings - the word used is the same word translated as “common” in Peter’s vision. The word Peter used for “unclean” is a different word. Thus Paul is also not talking about unclean foods in the Torah either.

When Jesus taught that it’s not what goes in to the stomach which makes someone unclean am I supposed to believe Jesus was simply speaking about washing one’s hands before eating or was He teaching that things eaten do not make you unclean because it goes through the stomach and out when one goes to the restroom. He clearly says it’s what comes from the heart and out of the mouth that makes one unclean. Now what that being said I would never tell a fellow believer that he or she shouldn’t follow the dietary law. If that believer wants to so be it. I will do my best not to be a stumbling block for them. May God guide us all into His truth through the Holy Spirit in Jesus mighty name 🙏❤️

Only food that is "made holy by the word of God" (v. 5) is "not to be rejected" (v. 4). Paul is not saying that literally NOTHING is to be rejected. That would mean Christians can eat blood or be cannibals as long as they pray over it first. Paul adds a qualification in verse 5: it must be made holy by the word of God. Since unclean animals are not made holy by the word of God (God's word explicitly prohibits such animals), they should not be eaten.

Hey David! I'd be curious about your thoughts on why Yeshua's teaching that "it is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person" offended the Pharisees. "And he called the people to him and said to them, “Hear and understand: it is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but what comes out of the mouth; this defiles a person.” Then the disciples came and said to him, *“Do you know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this saying?”* (Matt 15:1-12) Do you think they were offended because the Torah specifically says that eating unclean things _does_ defile a person? "You shall not make yourselves detestable with any swarming thing that swarms, and you shall not defile yourselves with them, and become unclean through them. For I am the Lord your God. Consecrate yourselves therefore, and be holy, for I am holy. You shall not defile yourselves with any swarming thing that crawls on the ground" (Lev 11:43-44) Rob

@DavidWilberBlog 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Rob, thanks for the question. You may not have seen my response to your response video, but as I explained there, we need to consider the context when interpreting this passage instead of reading what we want into the text. The immediate context informs how the text should be interpreted. The reason that NT scholars reject the view that Jesus does away with the dietary laws in this passage is that Matthew (and Mark) make it abundantly clear that the controversy concerned only ritual handwashing. Importing the dietary laws into this narrative goes beyond the text. As NT scholar Dr. Matthew Thiessen points out, Matthew frames the entire narrative with the topic of handwashing (Matt 15:2, 20) to ensure that his readers do not wrongfully conclude that Jesus did away with the dietary laws. So, if you want to know why the Pharisees were offended, all you have to do is read the text for what it plainly says. Matthew makes it extremely clear that they were offended because Jesus did not respect their handwashing tradition (Again, see Matt 15:20). Regarding Lev 11:43-44, while the Torah uses the same language of impurity for eating unclean animals, scholars do not place this in the same category of ritual impurity-and for good reason. In contrast to ritual impurity, no ritual washings or offerings remove the "impurity" of eating unclean animals. The issue of ingesting unclean animals simply doesn't fit within the parameters of what ancient Jews like the Pharisees understood as ritual impurity. What scholars have determined is that, in Lev 11:43-44, impurity is used as a metaphor for becoming morally offensive. You might disagree with how ancient Jews understood these texts. Still, we need to understand their perspective if we are going to properly understand these controversies between Jesus and the Pharisees in the NT. The issue in Mark 7 and Matt 15 is regarding ritual impurity, which the text itself makes clear. This is a separate issue from unclean animals. Now, I understand how this can be confusing if you are unfamiliar with these nuances and haven't read any of the scholarly work done in this area. For more information on these distinctions, I recommend Dr. Matthew Thiessen's book "Jesus and the Forces of Death" (Baker, 2020), Dr. Jonathan Klawan's book "Impurity and Sin in Ancient Judaism" (Oxford, 2020), and Dr. Yair Furstenberg's paper "Defilement Penetrating the Body: A New Understanding of Contamination in Mark 7.15," NTS 54 (2008). There's also an excellent presentation on Mark 7 from Dr. Logan Williams, which was presented at Houston Baptist Seminary in Feb of 2022. Hope these resources help you in your studies!

Yes, Jesus fulfilled ALL the law and the Prophets perfectly inclusive of the dietary law, the Sabbath, the Holy Feasts etc. Undeniably, in Acts10 in the Peter’s vision there were no people but it was about eating unclean foods. And yet, without being told, Peter knew that the command Jesus repeated three times “what God has made clean don’t called common” or unclean - it was talking about more than just the food in the vision but it is also about people. So how does Peter make the connection? Because he had been raised a good Torah-observant Jew and he knew how inter-connected food and people are in the law, Peter knew that this vision about food signaled a change in the status of people as well. The clean and unclean laws that Peter and his ancestors had lived under the past 1500 years had changed under the new covenant. And notice that the words of Jesus in the vision didn’t mention food or people or any specific law. It was a universal statement it’s almost like Jesus was putting His hands on Peter’s face and staring into his eyes and repeating the words until it sunk in Peter, what God has made clean do not called common not once but thrice. Had the law Giver gone bonkers? And Peter was staring at Jesus and he starts to nod, and he is like, “Okay okay I think I get it”. And so he heads off to these Gentiles house. And think what it would have meant. In the near East was (and is) known for its hospitality. It’s very much an honor/shame culture. So you don’t have someone over to your house and not honor your guest by putting out some food for them. That would be shameful. We see many accounts of this in the NT; We see Jesus in the parable of the persistent neighbor is based on this cultural principle. This is why, in antiquity, a Jew visiting Gentile’s home was a socially taboo. And here is Peter’s vision fresh in his mind, sitting in a home of a Gentile completely unconcerned about whatever food they might put out for him. Because he knows Jesus has declared it all clean. And of course we read at the end of Chapter 10 that the Holy Spirit felled on that household and they all become believers and was then baptized in Jesus, In fact, the Cornelius family was the first Gentiles who placed their faith in Christ. This is a watershed in God’s story, this is why in the very next chapter in Acts11, the entire of Peter’s vision was told again, including the commands Jesus repeated three times. So the author even repeats the things that were repeated which tells us how important this episode is….. Now there’s a common objection from our hebrew roots friends, says Peter’s vision was about Gentiles and not food. Not so, here are the reasons; #1 the vision is literally about food. God told Peter to eat the clean animals which He had cleansed…. #2.on what basis are we willing to allow for a change in the issue of people but not food? #3 if the vision of the food solely intended as a metaphor for the Gentiles then Jesus was using the wrong metaphor. He was essentially saying “Look I know in this video I’m telling you the food is now clean, but that is not really true. It’s just an example I’m using to show you can hang out with the Gentiles now. No that’s how God works. And actually, the problem is far deeper than that. Because there are no actual laws in the Torah that prohibit Jews from acting socially with the Gentiles. In Acts10:28 when Peter tells Cornelius and his family ; Act 10:28 And he said unto them, Ye know how that it is an unlawful(not Mosaic law but according to traditions or customs) thing for a man that is a Jew to keep company, or come unto one of another nation; but God hath shewed me that I should not call any man common or unclean.” The food laws acted as the primary social barrier between Gentiles and Jews. And Peter’s vision clearly taught that those clean/unclean food laws were no longer in effect. There was the whole point of the vision with the sheet of animals. So Peter put two and two together and he now realized that now he could share a table with Gentiles without that social barrier that resulted from the ritual purity laws. He understood now when Jesus repeated three times and he couldn’t have been mistaken about that. Even the gospel is to be preached to all Gentiles nations in the great commission and that the food is now clean and the dietary laws have serves its purpose as Jesus reaffirms it in Peter’s vision and don’t call what God has cleanse as unclean anymore. That’s why God had ended His sacrificial systems in the temple. Thank you.

Romans 14 shows that the dietary laws are no longer necessary, but if one follows them; allow them until they're able to understand. Romans 14:13-23 (NASB) New American Standard Bible Principles of Conscience 14 Now accept the one who is weak in faith, but not to have quarrels over opinions. 2 One person has faith that he may eat all things, but the one who is weak eats only vegetables. 3 The one who eats is not to regard with contempt the one who does not eat, and the one who does not eat is not to judge the one who eats, for God has accepted him. 4 Who are you to judge the [c]servant of another? To his own [d]master he stands or falls; and he will stand, for the Lord is able to make him stand. 5 One person values one day over another, another values every day the same. Each person must be fully convinced in his own mind. 6 The one who observes the day, observes it for the Lord, and the one who eats, does so with regard to the Lord, for he gives thanks to God; and the one who does not eat, it is for the Lord that he does not eat, and he gives thanks to God. 7 For not one of us lives for himself, and not one dies for himself; 8 for if we live, we live for the Lord, or if we die, we die for the Lord; therefore whether we live or die, we are the Lord’s. 9 For to this end Christ died and lived again, that He might be Lord both of the dead and of the living. 10 But as for you, why do you judge your brother or sister? Or you as well, why do you regard your brother or sister with contempt? For we will all appear before the judgment seat of God. 11 For it is written: “As I live, says the Lord, to Me every knee will bow, And every tongue will give praise to God.” 12 So then each one of us will give an account of himself to God. 13 Therefore let’s not judge one another anymore, but rather determine this: not to put an obstacle or a stumbling block in a brother’s or sister’s way. 14 I know and am convinced in the Lord Jesus that nothing is unclean in itself; but to the one who thinks something is unclean, to that person it is [m]unclean. 15 For if because of food your brother or sister is hurt, you are no longer walking in accordance with love. Do not destroy with your choice of food that person for whom Christ died. 16 Therefore do not let what is for you a good thing be spoken of as evil; 17 for the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. 18 For the one who serves Christ in this way is acceptable to God and approved by other people. 19 So then we pursue the things which make for peace and the building up of one another. 20 Do not tear down the work of God for the sake of food. All things indeed are clean, but they are evil for the person who eats and causes offense. 21 It is good not to eat meat or to drink wine, or to do anything by which your brother or sister stumbles. 22 The faith which you have, have as your own conviction before God. Happy is the one who does not condemn himself in what he approves. 23 But the one who doubts is condemned if he eats, because his eating is not from faith; and whatever is not from faith is sin."

“since it enters not his heart but his stomach, and is expelled?” (Thus he declared all foods clean.)” ‭‭Mark‬ ‭7‬:‭19‬ ‭ESV‬‬ Why would Jesus have to “declare” something clean that was already clean 🤔. Were the traditions of the fathers so authoritative that Jesus had to declare food eaten with unwashed hands as clean? 👀 Idk sir. I don’t think the Pharisee’s traditions were so powerful that Jesus had to make a divine declaration over them. If it was a divine declaration it think it would have been addressing what had been previously divinely inspired.

If we assume that this translation of 7:19c is accurate, if the Pharisees have labeled biblically clean food "defiled" because it was touched with unwashed hands (which is the entire topic of the dispute), then it makes perfect sense for Jesus to say, "Actually this food is clean." But I don't think that translation is accurate, as I explain in the video. It doesn't make sense in Greek. It is better to understand the final clause as a continuation of Jesus's words, not as a parenthetical statement from Mark. See the end of this video and also watch the interview I did with Dr. Logan Williams regarding his recent paper on Mark 7:19c that was published in the journal New Testament Studies (Cambridge).

Jesus kept the law as it wasn't yet fulfilled. That didn't happen until 40 years after his ascension at his return to claim his bride. The 2nd covenant was ratified in just the same way as the 1st. Moses was given the law then they had their faith tested for 40 years thrn were given the land as their inheritance after the Joshua trumpet ritual. It's a perfect foreshadowing of the new and better covenant. Paul told us it was becoming obsolete and passing away. Paul knew whrn Jesus was going to return as he talked aboit the 40 years and each epistle was a bit closer to the time. James and Peter must have known too as all the epistles have imminent time statements. Peter was told to eat anything. God can not tempt anyone so would he wilfully make Peter break the dietary law?
