I've heard a lot of people mention sharp edges but I didn't experience this on either my red or purple Erebus. I could only pick one to keep, so I kept the red one, and this is THE best "everyday" watch. It is a bit heavy, but it feels well-built, it's legible, and very comfortable.

Very useful kind of review since everyone should already know the details. I bought the watch for two reasons even though I really didn't need more divers. First, to support and thank Jody as you point out and second to add a teal colorway into my collection. So many colors available.

This was a hard pass for me when it was released. It’s completely uninspiring and has nothing we haven’t seen a million times before. The new one is a much better effort but again very little that hasn’t been seen before. This might be a good choice for the first time watch buyer who wants a diver. If Jody is in it for the long run, he needs to come up with an Erebus design language or DNA if you will like Direnzo or Lorier to secure a long term following rather than rely on “I’ll buy it to support Jody”. That idea will wear thin. Good honest review Shane.

I unfortunately agree. As much as I want to support Jody, their designs are simply way too "safe" and do nothing for me. The Ascent is much nicer and more my style but I have so many very similar looking watches, I just know I'd have a honeymoon period for a few weeks and then it would get neglected.

@@andrewd7586Knowing Jodi is trying to cater to WIS’s limited tastes, it must either be a no date Explorer or a mOoN wAtCh. Couldn’t possibly be a dress watch, everybody knows the proper watch to wear with a suit is a 15mm thick diver on a bracelet. 200m WR minimum in case you fall into the champagne fountain at the black tie ball. The “dynamic pressure” of the sparkling wine can ruin movements.

Excellent review. Nails it perfectly. Personally the strap pack saved it. Black rubber. Black dial. Matching date wheel. Extreme legibility. But, it's still a bit rough in places. Also aspects of the launch were a bit naively done that didn't reward early adopters. But all in all, he's a nice enough fella and reasonable watch at the price point. Needs to consider the returns policy though. Better to be realistic and charge a few more quid to improve QC or fund a reasonable approach to the warranty that does not piss people off. Thanks Shane!

Wasn’t easy for you to do this review, and I think you did great job. Concerning the watch, it’s too generic, second one as well. He is trying to make a watch to satisfy reviewers needs, thus not providing anything original. Jody needs to focus on creativity and originality. Every watch has flaws, but if you love the watch you love it with flaws as well

I think that this video highlights a potential challenge with this watch - it's a great entry level diver, but Jodys audience are not typically looking for an entry level anything. I also try to ignore 'value' as a reason to buy a watch these days. If this was $100-$150 more expensive, would I buy it? Because value won't mean much in 12 months if that was the main reason to buy it.

Great specs but I buy watches for its looks and this, along with the brand name, looks and sounds like a typical aliexpress random watch that took inspiration from Helm and Sinn. I hope Jody and his brand find some sort of brand cohesion because their new follow up field watch looks nothing like this. Usually brands have a distinct look within their whole lineup. Makes me feel like they are already abandoning this design language.

"In-n-Out"? Yep, the best budget 🍔🍟🧋! (When I lived in LA, if I wanted to "scratch the burger itch", there was only one option). Burger analogy... The Erebus Origin? Nope, not quite an "In-n-Out", sorry. (Needless to say, I like what Jody is doing) ...It's more like a "Whopper", perhaps? The Origin (also) looks quite chunky in the pics. Sticking to the burger analogy, the Whopper is "flame grilled" and for my taste, is generally a "tastier option" than a Big Mac, so Jody's "Whopper" is a "nearly but not quite".

I'd call his first watch a "safe design", nothing too bold, nothing too bad, somehow generic. Unimpressive for me aesthetically but can't complain at a dive watch that looks basic like a tool - that's on the very origin of dive watches i believe. He got his brand talked about and the necessary start and now released a second watch that fills the gap left by watches like the Seiko SARBs, but better executed it seems. All this indicate a good march forward by Erebus in my opinion.

Super thoughtful and tough but fair. I think you got everything right. It speaks well of you that Jody chose your channel for a review. You should have WAY more subs than you do. I almost bought one just to support Jody. I want his company to succeed. I have a feeling he could end up making very good watches given the large number he puts his hands on. I did appreciate the adjust on the fly bracelet. This should be the standard from now on, even at this price point and it’s feeling to me very slow to roll out.

Here is how my process went with this watch: 1. Donated my blue Orient Mako to a silent auction event. 2. Realized I didn't have a blue watch in the collection. 3. Jody is one of the channels I watch and he released the Origin. 4. I had a little extra bourbon one evening... 5. An Erebus showed up a few months later It is a good watch. Here is a sixth reason to avoid purchasing the Erebus Origin. If, like me, you purchase an Erebus Origin and discover within a week or so that the watch fails to update the date automatically at midnight and freezes between the prior and new date, you'll assume you should return it under warranty. Surprise! You'll find you're responsible for the cost of shipping the watch to Australia. A price that in the US will be at least $50 without insurance and well over $100 with minimal insurance coverage. That, by the way, is not a common practice.For example, one of Erebus' major competitors (Boderry) cover return shipping costs for watches with issues that emerge in the first months of ownership. I initially purchased the Erebus Origin in part to support Jody after seeing and admiring his reviews for several years. I won't make that mistake again.
@RelativeTime
@RelativeTime 4 ай бұрын
Ouch sorry to hear that. So was the date not working at all?
@stephenhendricks6790
@stephenhendricks6790 4 ай бұрын
@@RelativeTime That's correct. It fails to advance the date at midnight and instead freezes halfway between the previous date and the current date. I wasn't so disappointed by the failure of the watch. After all, it's a cheap watch presumably manufactured in China. What was unacceptable was that Erebus failed to describe their warranty policy in any detail on their website and failed to take any responsibility for the shipping cost to redeem the warranty. As noted above, that differs radically from Boderry, a major Erebus competitor.

However just like with the pt5000 how they are put together makes a world of difference. So it can be a crap shoot. I know when loreir first used them they bought a bunch and went over each with a fine tooth comb before picking out the best to use. I also remember when vesuviate (microbrand) used an automatic version in a release they tested the prototypes for a full year before launching their Kickstarter. Actually had each one on a winder the entire time to make sure they kept going So they can be good, but if you're buying one off AliExpress there is still the chance of getting a lemon.

@@RelativeTime Shane it was the Venus 150 [ed: 175] which dates from the 1940s or 50s; Venus sold the movement to Sea-Gull in order to fund the production of their then new movement, the Venus 175 [ed: 178]. Around the same time, Citizen sold a 17 jewel hand wind movement and the machinery to make it to HMT, which then used that simple movement until the mid 2000s when the company all but fell apart. I heard from a collector that Citizen then wanted to buy back the machinery after HMT stopped producing the movements, but the deal fell apart, and the machinery was scrapped.

@@RelativeTime Hi Shane, the Sea-Gull chrono movement is based on the Venus 175, which was used by many Swiss and other brands in the 1940s, 50s and 60s. Breitling used them quite a lot, and the famous vintage 806 Navitimer has the Venus 178 movement, developed from the 175. China bought the original plans and tooling for the 175 from Venus, who were happy to sell, so the Sea-Gull movement is a genuine 175 and not a cheap knock-off. Five Guys is the best burger for the money. Even w/ how high the cost is. I travel for work, have tired them all and have no region bias. But to be fair, they’re all fast food burgers and your money is better spent elsewhere. Which ties directly into the watch. Spend your money elsewhere on a known brand. I’m glad Jody is trying to diversify and create a revenue stream outside of KZbin. Because it’s simply a matter of when the money from YT stops. But I do not trust him as an unbiased reviewer because he now has skin in the game. And I don’t like his watches because they’re boring, derivative and sold to you on specs. On the flip side we here in Kentucky rant and rave about White Castle however in our case White Castle is actually unique and very good, though I'm not sure I want to hear the watch metaphor that connects to White Castle. But on point, this watch is extremely vanilla. Not exceptional, not offensive. A safe and pragmatic move by the cautious owner of a new brand. Jody needs to get established and then I'm sure he'll branch out so while this diver is not for me, I expect he will make something more like his second model that is. *PS okay yeah he did make something for me, the new Ascent in blue aventurine and once I see a review I'm almost certain I'll buy one so there you go.

I've heard the quality of the Ascent is better, but haven't seen one myself. So take that with a grain of salt. Dave has one for review, so I'd keep an eye out for that. Now you got me wondering what the white castle of the watch world is... Probably a smaller straight forward tool watch.

I got the white dial Origin. I feel like I was sold false goods as it is clearly more metallic than matte white (they have since changed the description to 'white/silver'). Otherwise, this watch is killer! The rounded H-link strap is insane. Bezel mechanics are top notch & it is overall very well balanced. Still ... I need a true white diver. Chr Ward, here I come

Good review! I can agree with all the points you made. I purchased the black color way. I believe it is a great watch and great value. And, one of my reasons for purchasing was to support Jody. His personality is unique. His content is enjoyable. To the best of my knowledge, he is the first KZbinr to launch a successful watch brand.

As far as I know he is. I know a few others have attempted to sell a watch before, but Jody seems to be the first that's fully committed to a full brand. I just hope he isn't going to far too fast as people are already talking about a 3rd watch.

I'd if you don't have one of the four brands mentioned in the beginning of the video (RZE, Jelm, Zelos, Phoibos) this is a good watch to consider ... Or if you just want to support Jody ... If you have 1-4 (I have two and low on the waiting list for a 3rd) of the other brands this may be a pass.

I think it is great value but I felt it was a cross between being too generic and a Helm Vanuatu homage. I'll be able to buy a titanium Vanuatu before the year is out so I'll hold off for that. I know Jody said they didn't want to take too much of a risk. The second one has more creativity with some really nice dials. I hope if they make a diver again they design it from scratch rather than borrowing design elements from other watches.

Well, saw Jody at Scottish Watch Reviews, said he will attend some place in America, where he will unveil his 3rd design watch. Guess No4 (+?) is already on some draw plans... That's a big turn for him, his channel, guess the whole watch reviewing thing. Not sure how i feel about all this, got a (somehow) sour taste in my mouth, my brain jumped in a weird mode too...
@RelativeTime

Well as long as it doesn’t become the focus of his channel and keeps it at a distance I think it’s ok. Like I think it’s ok to announce it, show off a watch once, but that’s about it. That he shouldn’t ever be promoting it in every video.
@lukewalker1051

Jody's watch does a lot of things wrong as you discussed. Pretty surprising really as Jody taste is generally pretty mainstream and sensible. If you think about it, to be a ground breaker in the watch space is extremely hard. Either replicate iconic watches aka pay homage to great watches and be susceptible to scorn for falling short, or posture watch designs more toward heretical or outlier design which of course shuns tradition of what's popular for a reason and risk violating aesthetic normalcy. Hard pass. PS. I unsubscribed to Jody's channel a while ago because of his dishonest click bait video titles.
@RelativeTime
@RelativeTime 4 ай бұрын
These days with micros it’s pretty hard to please everyone. Like you said, you either go to homagey, and take the heat, or you go to far and everyone thinks it’s too strange. As for clickbait.. yeah it’s an unfortunate side effect of the algorithm these days. As it won’t even let you current subscribers know you have something new out, unless the click through rate on the thumbnail is good.

If I was in the market for an entry level diver, I would buy one of these. The design is uninspiring, but it is a very functional watch. I especially like the large amount of real estate for lume to be applied on the hands. It makes legibility at night superior. The reason I keep buyer Seiko watches is because they always drill the lugs. Why don't these microbrands drill the lugs?

Partly extra cost, and sometimes it looks odd with the design. But I'd prefer it if they all had it too. At least here the bracelet has quick release which helps a lot.

Awesome approach to this review. I didn’t end up getting one of these for several of the con reasons you pointed out. I already have several great divers, and I didn’t like the flat dials, I felt the colours looked a bit washed out, almost. I also found that when I converted the price into my local currency, and added in the additional shipping costs, it suddenly wasn’t quite the bargain it seemed; when compared to other similar specked divers, that all offered free shipping. We don’t all have big budgets in this hobby, and new releases have been steadily edging their way upmarket with each new offering. Whereas brands like San Martin have been increasing their quality, remaining steady, and offer free shipping, for example.

I saw it this morning, it sort of looks like they had a bunch of different ideas and threw all of them at the same watch. The strap looks good, and I kind of like the dial, as it's a bit different; however, the case looks like a big metal ashtray, the crown is ugly and too big, I'm not crazy about the hands, while the branding is really quite awful.
