This was a hard pass for me when it was released. It’s completely uninspiring and has nothing we haven’t seen a million times before. The new one is a much better effort but again very little that hasn’t been seen before. This might be a good choice for the first time watch buyer who wants a diver. If Jody is in it for the long run, he needs to come up with an Erebus design language or DNA if you will like Direnzo or Lorier to secure a long term following rather than rely on “I’ll buy it to support Jody”. That idea will wear thin. Good honest review Shane.

@@andrewd7586Knowing Jodi is trying to cater to WIS’s limited tastes, it must either be a no date Explorer or a mOoN wAtCh. Couldn’t possibly be a dress watch, everybody knows the proper watch to wear with a suit is a 15mm thick diver on a bracelet. 200m WR minimum in case you fall into the champagne fountain at the black tie ball. Excellent review. Nails it perfectly. Personally the strap pack saved it. Black rubber. Black dial. Matching date wheel. Extreme legibility. But, it's still a bit rough in places. Also aspects of the launch were a bit naively done that didn't reward early adopters. But all in all, he's a nice enough fella and reasonable watch at the price point. Needs to consider the returns policy though. Better to be realistic and charge a few more quid to improve QC or fund a reasonable approach to the warranty that does not piss people off. Thanks Shane!

Wasn’t easy for you to do this review, and I think you did great job. Concerning the watch, it’s too generic, second one as well. I think that this video highlights a potential challenge with this watch - it's a great entry level diver, but Jodys audience are not typically looking for an entry level anything. Because value won't mean much in 12 months if that was the main reason to buy it.

"In-n-Out"? Yep, the best budget 🍔🍟🧋! (When I lived in LA, if I wanted to "scratch the burger itch", there was only one option). Burger analogy... The Erebus Origin? Nope, not quite an "In-n-Out", sorry. (Needless to say, I like what Jody is doing) ...It's more like a "Whopper", perhaps? The Origin (also) looks quite chunky in the pics. Sticking to the burger analogy, the Whopper is "flame grilled" and for my taste, is generally a "tastier option" than a Big Mac, so Jody's "Whopper" is a "nearly but not quite".

I'd call his first watch a "safe design", nothing too bold, nothing too bad, somehow generic. Unimpressive for me aesthetically but can't complain at a dive watch that looks basic like a tool - that's on the very origin of dive watches i believe. He got his brand talked about and the necessary start and now released a second watch that fills the gap left by watches like the Seiko SARBs, but better executed it seems. All this indicate a good march forward by Erebus in my opinion.

Here is a sixth reason to avoid purchasing the Erebus Origin. If, like me, you purchase an Erebus Origin and discover within a week or so that the watch fails to update the date automatically at midnight and freezes between the prior and new date, you'll assume you should return it under warranty. Surprise! You'll find you're responsible for the cost of shipping the watch to Australia. A price that in the US will be at least $50 without insurance and well over $100 with minimal insurance coverage. That, by the way, is not a common practice.For example, one of Erebus' major competitors (Boderry) cover return shipping costs for watches with issues that emerge in the first months of ownership. I initially purchased the Erebus Origin in part to support Jody after seeing and admiring his reviews for several years. I won't make that mistake again.
@RelativeTime4 ай бұрын
Ouch sorry to hear that. So was the date not working at all?
@stephenhendricks67904 ай бұрын
@@RelativeTime That's correct. It fails to advance the date at midnight and instead freezes halfway between the previous date and the current date. I wasn't so disappointed by the failure of the watch. After all, it's a cheap watch presumably manufactured in China. What was unacceptable was that Erebus failed to describe their warranty policy in any detail on their website and failed to take any responsibility for the shipping cost to redeem the warranty. As noted above, that differs radically from Boderry, a major Erebus competitor.

Around the same time, Citizen sold a 17 jewel hand wind movement and the machinery to make it to HMT, which then used that simple movement until the mid 2000s when the company all but fell apart. What do you think of the new one? I'm hearing a lot of people say they like it, but on the fence about buying it at the same time.
@watchchimp31024 ай бұрын
@@RelativeTime I like it, but I have the same issue again. I'm not a GADA watch guy; it's kind of antithetical to collecting (or accumulating) watches. I enjoy the individuality and purpose of every watch. I'm a field watch fiend and I'm hoping that's what their next offering is! 👍🏼

I'd if you don't have one of the four brands mentioned in the beginning of the video (RZE, Jelm, Zelos, Phoibos) this is a good watch to consider ... Or if you just want to support Jody ... If you have 1-4 (I have two and low on the waiting list for a 3rd) of the other brands this may be a pass.
@paddypower59654 ай бұрын
I think it is great value but I felt it was a cross between being too generic and a Helm Vanuatu homage. I'll be able to buy a titanium Vanuatu before the year is out so I'll hold off for that. I know Jody said they didn't want to take too much of a risk. The second one has more creativity with some really nice dials. I hope if they make a diver again they design it from scratch rather than borrowing design elements from other watches.

Its an okay watch but predictably influenced by the Helm Vanuatu. If you can stomach the 2 year wait list the Helm is the one to go for.

Well, saw Jody at Scottish Watch Reviews, said he will attend some place in America, where he will unveil his 3rd design watch. Guess No4 (+?) is already on some draw plans... That's a big turn for him, his channel, guess the whole watch reviewing thing. Not sure how i feel about all this, got a (somehow) sour taste in my mouth, my brain jumped in a weird mode too...
@RelativeTime4 ай бұрын
Well as long as it doesn’t become the focus of his channel and keeps it at a distance I think it’s ok. Like I think it’s ok to announce it, show off a watch once, but that’s about it. That he shouldn’t ever be promoting it in every video.
@lukewalker10514 ай бұрын
Jody's watch does a lot of things wrong as you discussed. Pretty surprising really as Jody taste is generally pretty mainstream and sensible. If you think about it, to be a ground breaker in the watch space is extremely hard. Either replicate iconic watches aka pay homage to great watches and be susceptible to scorn for falling short, or posture watch designs more toward heretical or outlier design which of course shuns tradition of what's popular for a reason and risk violating aesthetic normalcy. Hard pass. PS. I unsubscribed to Jody's channel a while ago because of his dishonest click bait video titles.
@RelativeTime4 ай бұрын
These days with micros it’s pretty hard to please everyone. Like you said, you either go to homagey, and take the heat, or you go to far and everyone thinks it’s too strange. As for clickbait.. yeah it’s an unfortunate side effect of the algorithm these days. As it won’t even let you current subscribers know you have something new out, unless the click through rate on the thumbnail is good.

If I was in the market for an entry level diver, I would buy one of these. The design is uninspiring, but it is a very functional watch. I especially like the large amount of real estate for lume to be applied on the hands. It makes legibility at night superior. The reason I keep buyer Seiko watches is because they always drill the lugs. Why don't these microbrands drill the lugs?
@RelativeTime4 ай бұрын
Partly extra cost, and sometimes it looks odd with the design. But I'd prefer it if they all had it too. At least here the bracelet has quick release which helps a lot.

Awesome approach to this review. I didn’t end up getting one of these for several of the con reasons you pointed out. I already have several great divers, and I didn’t like the flat dials, I felt the colours looked a bit washed out, almost. I also found that when I converted the price into my local currency, and added in the additional shipping costs, it suddenly wasn’t quite the bargain it seemed; when compared to other similar specked divers, that all offered free shipping. We don’t all have big budgets in this hobby, and new releases have been steadily edging their way upmarket with each new offering. Whereas brands like San Martin have been increasing their quality, remaining steady, and offer free shipping, for example.
@RelativeTime4 ай бұрын
Have you seen the new San Martin spin off brand? What do you think of their watch?
@theclocker74064 ай бұрын
I saw it this morning, it sort of looks like they had a bunch of different ideas and threw all of them at the same watch. The strap looks good, and I kind of like the dial, as it's a bit different; however, the case looks like a big metal ashtray, the crown is ugly and too big, I'm not crazy about the hands, while the branding is really quite awful.
@RelativeTime4 ай бұрын
@@theclocker7406 it reminds me a bit of when Phoibos made the first great wall. Which isn't necessarily a good thing. As it was a commercial failure for them.

Agree with all your points - spot on to my impressions as well. The Origin looks like a Helm and is in my opinion a spec monster but stylistically cache and boring now ... The second release reminds me of the dial on my Phoibos Eagle Ray and is more interesting in my opinion. I believe the brand does have a third release coming.
