A lot of this seems like “George Lucas didn’t think that far ahead when making the original trilogy so he made something up” is the real explanation lmao

It was necessary. A headstone would have invited questions. Shmi's name leads to Watoo, which leads to Luke learning that his father was a Jedi. More: Anakin was one of the most famous and powerful Jedi who fought in the Clone Wars. That leads to new questions that attract the attention of the Empire.
@random32638272 күн бұрын
I dunno guys. Say I was some random local farmer, and a well known member of my farm was kidnapped by these raiders. It's not an unheard of occurrence, but no one can do anything. Then her body is returned. Everyone is rightly sad and so she's laid to rest... then the stories come. An entire tribe of raiders slaughtered, down to the last child. People can figure out what happened, but what can they do? They couldn't even get back the woman that had been kidnapped by them. The other tribes of raiders see what happened but they're both slightly pleased a new patch of territory opened up but secretly terrified at the fate of an entire tribe. It becomes a cautionary tale, and they avoid that one farm run by humans. An uneasy status quo is established between the raiders and the farmers; you stay over there, we stay over here. In Legands, I think Owen was one of the few people that knew the true identity of Darth Vader. Not sure if it because Obi-Wan told him but I think he knew. A lot of the choices he made regarding raising Luke was to keep him from finding out the truth. That's why he wanted to delay him from applying to the Imperial academy and why when Obi-Wan had interacted with him as a boy, he chased him off, telling him not to come back (this is Legands mind you, so not sure if it was changed.) I think he removed the headstone for the same reason. Luke definitely grew up hearing the story about a woman taken from his family's farm and the fate of the tribe that took her. But since he never saw a headstone with his last name on it, that would keep him from looking deeper. I definitely don't agree with a lot of Uncle Owen's choices when raising Luke, but I can understand why he made them.

Now I get it why Anakin once he became Vader send troopers to mercilessly slaughter them, they not only disrespected Shmi’s grave but also make Luke be completely unaware of his legacy. And there’s no excuse like the roots Shmi have had with Vader, she was an independent individual. They could’ve easily lie to Luke about his dad’s death but it was unnecessary to do the same with Shmi. It just proves how bad of a person uncle Owen and aunt Beru were.
@StarWars_Insider2 күн бұрын
Yeah that’s another good reason
@Cailus35422 күн бұрын
Shmi's name leads to Watoo. Watoo leads to the truth about Anakin. Luke's curiosity attracts the Empire. Owen had little choice if Luke was to remain secret.
@MrArantonКүн бұрын
Luke never met Shmi. She never spoiled him with his favourite foods, never looked after him, never read him stories… with Luke having no such memories about her, to him her would be just like any grave of a stranger that died before he was even born. As for Owen‘s and Beru‘s relationship with Shmi: I remember how awkward it was when my father found himself a new girlfriend after my mom died. It took years to accept her as family. I can imagine that Owen and Beru never got to that point, due to Shmi being abducted not that long after Cliegg bought and freed her. In that case I see why having the grave of „that person“ on their farm wouldn‘t sit right with them. But that doesn‘t make them horrible people. Just humans with complex emotions.

I’m pretty sure there’s a legends novel where Luke speaks to some of the podracers who were a part of the Boonta Eve in TPM to learn more about his fathers childhood and ended up learning more about Shmi, too.

I don’t like that. Owen should have kept up the head stone. It would not have interfered with the story even if Luke had seen the headstone. She wasn’t mentioned in the Original Trilogy because George didn’t think that far ahead but there wasn’t really a reason to mention her anyway, so Luke could have known.
