It is at this point that Darth Sidious fakes his vunerability, he felt by doing so he might sway the approaching Anakin, who was deeply conflicted, to tip the balance back in his favour. It was a matter of survival, and Sidious was ruthless in achieving it.

The way I saw it was that Mace legitimately disarmed Sidious and reflected the lightening back on him, causing him some distress. However, Sidious feigned weakness to get Anakin to intervene. When Anakin chopped mace's hand off, Palpatine seized the moment and showed he had 'unlimited power' left.

@ Zachary L - Look up Sith Alchemy (Mask), there is your answer. Sidious always looked like that burnt disformed creature. He used Sith Alchemy (Mask) to gain a normal man's appearance. His face reverted back due to the lightning hitting his face. He then used that to his advantage claiming that the Jedi scared his face. There are always deformities when using the dark side. Look at every sith, you will see deformities. The eyes are the first thing to go, hence the yellow and red color. Then the body is the second. Why do you think there is a different appearance between the Jedi and Sith?

Personally, I think that Sidious is the most over rated Sith. I feel that his skills and talents lay in deceiving, manipulation, and the witch craft behind the dark side. Besides, Mace is like one of the best duelists and is pretty powerful himself. Mace reflected Sidious' lightning back unto him. The only reason why Mace was killed was because Vader showed up and cut his hands off.

I've always believed Yoda to be the more powerful jedi overall but Mace was seen almost as a special weapon specifically to combat the sith. As you said in your video the darker the opponent the stronger Mace will be. I think Palpatine did indeed fight Mace at full power which in turn only made Mace his equal. Against someone like Yoda Mace would lose solely because there is no darkness he can feed off of but Palpatine was the exact kind of threat Mace trained to fight against. They simply couldnt beat each other. I also feel that Palpatine was a new breed of Sith, one that would put it all on the line in order to achieve greater power and for that reason i believe he fought Mace with all he had then threw the fight when he felt Anakin was close enough to watch, therefore in the perfect place to turn him. Taking that risk, even if it meant losing, was just simply worth it

Technically Vapaad was used against the rogue dark Jedi. The Sith were long dead before Mace was born, that is what the Jedi claimed. The only thing is that that technique is used against people that use dark side power, hence Dark Jedi. Vapaad was based off a wild fighting style known as Juyo, which most sith use. Only Mace and one other jedi were known to have mastered Vapaad. Vapaad does require power from the person using it. With Sidious's power, Mace would have ran out of power and lost concentration using Vapaad and would have died. Yoda is a jedi master, that uses a saber fighting style in close range and in tight spaces. That is why Sidious won the battle against Yoda.

When emersing youself and using the Dark Side at the level Palpatine did, you do end up looking like a pale ballsack. He did hide it using force shroud, a power he kept using up until he used the very powerful force lightning, removing it's effects. Well, after the fight, he would no longer need to use it anyway.. Cuz in the event where he lost ( hahahaha very funny), the secret of him being a sith lord would no longer be a secret, so why continue to pretend otherwise. While Darth Sidious was firing Force-lightning at Mace Windu, both seemed to be struggling, however only one was being genuine. The novelization of the movie clearly depicts Mace Windu being overpowered, by Darth Sidious' Force-lightning. Mace's blade bent so close to his face that he was choking, on ozone. "Anakin, he's too strong for me"-Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith novelization. On the other hand, George Lucas confirmed that Darth Sidious was, in fact feigning helplessness, while at that point, in the director's commentary of the movie. He was never in any real danger and could have killed Mace Windu, at any point, during that scene of the movie. Also, Darth Sidious' face wasn't actually scarred. His knowledge of the Force was so great that he was able to effectively prevent his face from being corrupted, by the Dark Side of the Force. During his confrontation, with Mace Windu, however, his own rebounding Force-lightning ( the primary use of his power ) revealed his true corrupted face.

Mace won. A sith lord (Especially palpatine) would never let himself come that close to death over the slim chance that they could get an apprentice they would later tell Luke to kill. You also said that sideous let mace live at the start and killed the others but that is untrue. In the fight, mace got into position the second sideous touched the ground but no other jedi did so sideous went after them.Also, when sideous first used force lightning you mask came off which means he was drained and weak.

Personally, I think Sidious sensed Anakin was on his way too and thought this would a good time to turn him fully to the dark side since he had mace in a 1v1. And waited until Anakin was close enough to intentionally throw, so he could appeal to him. I know Mace is a badass and could definitely hold his own against him, but Sidious was a master planner so he probably knew this was the perfect opportunity.

Yeah, I really don't think Mace Windu could have beaten Palpatine otherwise. Yoda was more powerful, and also more experienced against Sith than Mace, but you can see during his duel vs Sidious, when full skill/power is unleashed on both sides, how hard it was for him. Yoda might very well have won without the fall but he is on another level, well above Mace Windu.

Dark Blue Beetle A teacher, and one of the most powerful Jedi to ever live. And definitely the most powerful Jedi in the Order at that time. Don't get me wrong, I freaking love Mace Windu, I think the character is amazing and he has one of the coolest lightsabers by far, but Yoda is way stronger in the Force and more equipped to fight a Sith like Sidious. Lightsaber skills aren't enough, if Sidious had thrown lighting with the same power against Mace as he did vs Yoda, it was over.

From my POV the fight was even and Sidious underestimated Windu's ability to fight against a dark side wielder. That said, sensing Anakin coming, Palpatine figured his best shot(with Dooku and Grievous dead) at survival would be to appear innocent and in danger of a powerful Jedi Master that Anakin had always questioned the motives of, thus winning Anakin's full trust and loyalty. It gets more complicated when Sidious let's his HATE for the Jedi and ego get the best of him when Windu begins taunting him, 'The oppression of the Sith will never return, YOU HAVE LOST'. Sidious then deviates from his plan and tries to kill Windu right there and then. Windu masterfully blocks his lightning attack, but foolishly thinks he can still destroy Sidious with Anakin standing right before them. The rest is history.

Nah, per the Revenge of the Sith novel, Mace won and was able use Vaapad at will. Vaapad actually allowed Mace to keep up with Palatine's speed, but, Palpatine was still killing Mace. Which in the novel, Mace mentioned to Anakin when Anakin arrived. I reckon because it was tiring to keep up with Palpatine who was extremely fast, per the novel. Anakin didn't bother to help Mace. That traitor. Nonetheless, Mace eventually got the jump on Palpatine due to his Vaapad skills. But, Palpatine leveraged Anakin to ultimately win by taking over Anakin's will and slicing off Mace's hand. If Anakin had not showed up, Palpatine would have been toast. No where in the Shatterpoint novel does it state that Mace could not use Vaapad at will. Furthermore, Mace's strength was being able to identify his opponent's weakness as opposed to absorbing their anger/energy. In fact, per the Revenge of the Sith novel, near the end of Mace's battle with Palpatine, Mace finally figured out Palatine's only weakness was, Anakin. Bottom line? The novels have the answers. The movies always leave out the fine details. For example, there was no good way for them to demonstrate Palpatine's speed on the big screen. Conversely, the novel pointed out his speed when he fought Mace and the other Jedis.

I think this duel solidifies Palpatine's talent at manipulation; he knew his telepathic message to Anakin would draw him, and he knew how hard to fight Mace, and exactly when to make it appear that he had been brutally defeated and was about to be mercilessly executed. The fight was never about beating Mace, whether he could win or not, but more about what exactly what Palpatine was about; pulling the strings of others for a desired outcome. Anakin cutting off Mace's hand was the triumphant moment all of his planning had been leading to: truly crushing the Jedi by turning their best and brightest against them, and, most importantly, by exposing their own hypocrisy. If one's morals do not stand in the most difficult of situations, then they never truly existed at all, but were merely a pretty facade. Palpatine proved, in the moment that Mace intended to kill him, that the Jedi were no better than the Sith at their core, and only as good as the situation proved convenient. Anakin even tried to argue this to Mace, and previously was trying to convince *himself* that the Jedi way was the right and good path, but Mace's decision to kill Palpatine was truly the moment when the Jedi fell apart.

AGREED AND SO THE CONCLUSION IS THIS: Anakin's role in Palp's duel with MW is far too convenient for it all to have happened by chance; on the other hand, the events are far too complex to have all been planned out. Although there's been no official answer, the truth is probably a balance between the two: Palpatine, an expert manipulator, set up a situation to his advantage, then reacted to the unpredictable elements with excellent fighting skills and quick thinking.

I disagree because Lucas disagrees xD. He clearly states in the ROTS commentary that the other Jedi were dispatched so easily not because Palpatine chose to spare Windu, but that only Windu and Yoda were on Palpatine's level. Furthermore, as stated by others, Palpatine doesn't seem the type to have let himself nearly get killed(when he's disarmed) to recruit a Jedi who may or may not aid him. The main reason why people think Palpatine threw the fight against Windu is because he defeated Yoda, and they do not consider that Windu to have been a stronger duelist than Yoda(which is what the movie portrays).

And we know from The Clone Wars tv show that he used 2 blades. So he threw the fight but still had that lightsaber on the off chance Anakin didn't fall prey to his plan

there is a point in the fight where Palpatine ducks under maces blade and puts his lightsaber right up to maces neck and waits allowing, mace to bring his guard up. Palpatine throws the fight with perfect timing, so when anakin enters the room it looks like an assassination attempt. mace repeats the line "he's to dangerous to be left alive". which I believe was Lucas telling us that Palpatine knew exactly how the duel would play out, and threw the fight to turn anakin to the dark side. all of Palpatines moves up to that point were perfectly executed, and that duel was as well

Sidious was also always much more of a force user than a lightsabre duelist and yet refrained him using his powers during the fight and only fully unleashed them to finish it. Really it was like Sidious was fighting with one hand tied behind his back. I'm sure if corrupting Anakin hadn't been his ultimate goal Sidious would have most likely used his incredible force powers to kill Mace rather than allowing the fight to drag on with lightsabres which was Mace's speciality.

If his greatest capability was in the force, why did he choose to duel Windu, who is known as one of the best duelist in the galaxy? Palp is cold and calculating so it is unlikely he was being overconfident here. Any real fan knows that palp was just buying time here until anakin arrived, and this whole scene was his chance to turn Anakin to the dark for good. That's how far above Windu he was in terms of power.

I always thought Palpatine threw the fight in order to successfully turn Anakin. I think he foresaw Anakin acting on his behalf to save him if he put on the whole "I'm so defenseless" routine. A way for people to understand what gives: Palpatine DID throw the battle, although Windu DID have a shot because he used Vaapad, a light saber combat style that directly counters the vicious imput of "hatred" from the opponent, which Sidious had plenty, as if in a sort of "loop" of aggressive counters. Then, Lucas said in an interview that Windu DID beat Sidious, and that was retconed by the canon novelization, in which we can see that Sidious clearly had the edge as Windu couldn't maintain the "looping" forever. In this final context, Sidious chose not to go all in for Windu to have a chance to seduce Anakin, and in the end only threw the battle because he KNEW Anakin was right there, and faked being afraid so Anakin would help him. But yeah, Mace had a shot.

So according to George Lucas, Mace won the duel(because of vapaad,) BUT he did not and could not win the FIGHT against Palpatine. The reason why is because AFTER Mace disarmed Palp, then Palp started using his force lightning, and Mace was just about to be overtaken by it's force as it was even bending the blade back towards his face. You can clearly see how much he's struggling even in the movie. This is stated in the novel clearly when it says concerning this scene that the force lightning was nothing like Mace ever experienced before and was BEYOND vapaad, so Mace couldn't hold it for much longer anyways whether Anakin was there or not. It also clearly shows this in the novel, because it states that both appeared to be struggling,(during this lightning scene) but only one was genuine in the struggle. The other feigned weakness. Palp could have kept going pretty much for as long as he wanted with it, but feigned weakness in that moment("I can't hold it any longer, I'm too weak") He used this moment to make Anakin think that Mace was a threat to him and gonna kill him if he didn't do something, forcing him to choose between the two. This is clearly shown when Palp states to Anakin, "I have the power to save her, you must choose!" Then when Anakin finally chooses, Palp just smiles and easily blasts Windu with lightning w/ his "unlimited power"(yet he couldn't hold it for much longer before? Yeah right!) Yoda also disarmed Palp when they fought, but it doesn't mean he won or would win the fight. ( They don't show it in the movie, but it's clearly mentioned in the novel.) It's only because Palp chose to start the duel w/ lightsabers that Windu had any chance in the first place. It he really wanted to just take him out quickly, he would have just hit him with lightning or force drain, or force sever, or any of the myriad of ways he knew to use the force. If you read any of the books concerning him or know anything about his character besides the brief glimpses they give in the movies, you'd know that Palpatine only uses lightsabers and has mastered all 7 forms, to only mock the jedi and show that he can do everything better than them, but uses his other force powers like lightning when he gets real serious. So, to wrap this up, even according to Lucas, Palpatine wins in the end regardless of being DISARMED by Mace or not, and regardless of Anakin being there or not. If Anakin wasn't there to begin with and Palp didn't know he was coming, he wouldn't have even tried to duel Mace, he'd just fast forward and start blasting him right away to get rid of him quickly. Mace wouldn't be able to hold against the lightning for long(as shown in the movie a bit, and clearly shown in the book) and then Palpatine would cook him to death, or just torture him a bit, before taking him prisoner for his experiments like he's done w/ other force users and such or any other depraved thing his mind comes up with.

In the novel it states that Sidious senses Anakin when he was about to enter the room, and states that Anakin sees Mace and Sidious going at it for a while and moving way fast (moving in and out of existance). Yet, in the movie you see Anakin entering the room and the first thing he sees is Mace pointing his saber at Sidious in the corner (like if he had just beat him). If we assume that Sidious let himself disarm intentionally so Anakin would think that Mace wanted to kill him at all cost .... then why did he spared Windu's life at the beggining of the fight if he had not sense Anakin was going to get there until the end ???? The truth is Sidious fought without holding back and Mace legitimally disarmed and cornered him. Is in that moment when he sensed Anakin entering the room and that's when he begins his charade : "Anakin I was right, the jedi are taking over". Then when Mace tells him : "The opression of the Sith will never return, you have lost" , Sidious gets so angry that he forgets for a moment his act and tries to strike Windu with lightning. When he notices that his lightning is being backfired at him and he has no chance of winning .... that's when he starts to play victim again so his only hope is to get help from Anakin .... which he gets in the end. The novel was written shortly after the movie was released so ....

I actually have a question that's really been bugging me! When Anakin became Vader, Sidious told him that every Jedi, including his friend Obi-Wan, was an enemy of the Republic. The theory of "Mace Windu could have potentially used the loop of Palpatine's hate against him" has some fundamental problems. First, it takes time for Mace Windu to activate that particular type of fighting style. Second, even when that fighting style is activated by Mace Windu, we clearly saw Palpatine has the ability to interrupt the ability of Mace Windu from using it. Finally, Palpatine could use his Force powers in combination with his light saber in order to make it so the fight is easily won by Palpaltine.

The novelization of the movie makes it clear that Mace Windu was being overpowered by Darth Sidious' Force-lightning. This was beyond Vaapad. The question is, would Sidious really risk everything on someone else's decision? Then again it makes sense about Windu tapping into Sidious' darkness. It would make sense why Windu decided that Sidious must die instead of being arrested (which is what his initial plans were.) If memory serves me right Anakin pleaded, to a point, that Sidious must be arrested. For us to believe that Sidious took a dive, he'd have to know that Windu would settle for nothing less than his death. I guess it's possible he used Windu's own technique against him, corrupted him just enough to insist that Sidious must be killed and force Anakin's hand. If that's what he did, he certainly used a similar strategy in RofJ. He draws Luke into the darkness, allows Luke to strike only to be saved by Vader. Fake a weakness or vulnerability just to get what he wants. He also does the same with the Rebellion. He allows the Rebels to reach the moon and he allows them to think the Death Star's shields are down so they'll attack with everything they got. Unfortunately, like he did with Anakin, if that's what truly happened, he put his trust in the actions of others and this time they failed to save him. If Vader doesn't toss him to his death then he'd surely have been destroyed once his troops failed to stop the Rebels in destroying the shield generator and the Death Star itself. Is it possible he got the ideas for these strategies due to his strategy fighting Windu? Windu's one of my favorite Jedi and I like to believe he lost due to Sidious' genius manipulation of Anakin, instead of by a fool who just got lucky that someone else intervened. I'd also like to believe that Sidious wasn't an idiot, that he manipulated Anakin as a backup plan. I don't think he'd put all his eggs in the Anakin basket but during his fight with Windu he realized he was out classed. He felt Anakin coming and sprung his backup plan, giving up in a fight that he knew he probably wouldn't win, and put all his trust in Anakin.

Mace did not have the strength to compete with Sidious. Sidious was an extremely powerful Sith Lord and he was syphoning from the Dark Sith Temple beneath the Jedi Temple. He mastered several lightsaber techniques, Juyo being one of them. Vapaad is based off of Juyo, which Sidious knows a lot about. Then you have Mace Windu with a limited supply of power and concentration level. He was losing his concentration on Vapaad, and without Vapaad he would die. So, Sidious would have defeated him easily without Vapaad.

I think it might be a bit of both. Sidious knew he was not good enough to defeat Windu, since his power is primarily through the Dark Side of the Force and not as a master saber fighter. But he knew Anakin would come and trusted that he could sway the young Jedi so he was prepared to engage in the duel knowing he'd be overpowered. Sidious was so confident in his own abilities as a manipulator and in the Dark Side that he was prepared to take a lot of risks. In the end it ultimately undid him, as was shown in ROTJ. His overconfidence was indeed his weakness, he was so sure of victory he did not see obvious things.

In the novel once Anakin enters the room and finds Palpatine defenseless and windu holding a saber to his throat, palpatine brilliantly uses the right choice of words. Don’t you see Anakin? This wasn’t an arrest, this was an assassination! Palpatine played his helpless role perfectly once again just the same when he played his hostage role on the invisible hand. #suggestion: What if Spar (The clone trooper who joined a group of Mandelorians after defecting from the Republic) was found by Boba Fett and got him to come out of his seclusion on the Mandelorian planet. Boba Fett wanted to Get Spar to help him on a bounty hunting mission after Slave1 had to make a landing on Mandelor to make repairs and Spar came out of his hovel to see what was going on. First Boba was surprised, but he realized that Spar was a clone of his father just like himself and he asked him who he was. That was when Spar told Boba his name and proceeded to help him effect repairs on Slave1. Soon Spar agrees to help Boba an a difficult mission to find a missing jedi named Mace Windu and bring hime to Lord Vader for execution. Eventually the pair find Mace on Jakku but instead of helping Boba take Windu in, he turned on Boba to save Windu. Spar had previous dealings with Windu where he found Windu's new beliefs in the darkside comparable to his own after he found an old sith holocron. Spar kept his lightsaber that Windu previously helped him to build while both learned from that old sith holocron. Spar generated sith lightning and attacked Boba while Mace used Shatter point to find Boba's weaknesses to exploit them. Boba was knocked unconscious and the pair of sith thought they killed him and they stole Slave1. Boba later wakes up and immediately goes to find a medical droid to fix his wounds. Spar and Windu begin a new life of bounty hunting and both wear full clone trooper armor with their red lightsabers on their side.

justin williams it does means a lot in the star wars universe, and it was the reason many light saber duelists lost their duels, like Count Dooku and an even better comparison to Palpatine is Qui Gon Jin, which was also someone who preferred using his force abilities instead of relying in his lightsaber skills and ended up losing to a much younger, well fit duelist.

Palatine excelled in juyo himself. he has no physical issues. at his level enhancing himself to absurd speeds is casual for him like for Yoda. and as the video mentioned NONE of the Jedi even when on guard were able to react to Palpatines all out speed. mace didn't have a chance until palp decided to give him one. not mentioned in the video, novel windy knew that the true fight was in anakin heart. he can sense the shatterpoint. Palpatines spent half the fight holding mace off and both of them can sense anakin and the conclusion coming.

Palpatine fought Darth Maul and Savage and was hit a couple of times. Obi wan fought them. One was a brute and one was someone Obi wan turned into a half man with metal legs. Yet Palpatine had a somewhat length battle then those Jedi he fought. Im pretty sure, those Jedi werent great fighters unlike Mace, Yoda etc.

Palpatine casually got up from a disadvantaged position on his knees, casually flicked away mauls sabers and then ended the fight like it was nothing. And I only recall him getting hit once with a shoulder tackle from savage which is iffy cause he didn't seem fazed by it at all still chuckling like a madman.
