My father-in-law who lives in Bengal was a devoted supporter of communist party until 2008. Once left parties allowed Tata factory in Singur he switched his allegiance to Mamata and now he considers communist party as "gaddar". He thinks all large businesses should be govt owned/PSU and only reason states allow private companies is due to corruption. I think many people resonates with this thought process in India. But as i grew up most of the industries are just on a verge of shutting down (even the public once) there's just a lot of scams going here and there, some getting busted some not. As a Bengali, I think the young generation is very capitalist, they see what is happening in other states and countries. The old generation like my father and uncles everybody I know are/were CPIM supporter & they still like CPIM( not necessarily vote them) without trying to understand what they did wrong, they just have a lingering feeling like those were the good times. I personally hate TMC but can see Mamta Banerjee is actually making some efforts to change but every single minister is rotten to their core ! I'm from Kerala, and I’ve noticed people here seem to dislike industries a lot. The communist government has been pretty tough on big companies, even forcing ones like Anna Aluminium and Kitex to leave. Kitex actually moved to Karnataka after their government sent a private jet to bring their manager over and convince them to invest there instead. Because of all this, big businesses don’t want to set up in Kerala. Plus, with fewer job opportunities, many general category students(mostly christians) are leaving India to find better options abroad.

I feel a growth rate of 6% is very low for an underdeveloped/developing state like West Bengal. Its lower than the national average. Bihar had a double digit growth for 3-4 years immediately after Nitish Kumar introduced reforms and improved law and order situation. You are partially correct in saying that WB is in a messy state not because of Mamta Banerjee alone, but massive reforms have to come about if investor confidence is to be restored and work culture (root cause of Bengal's economic downfall) is to be improved.

Well first of all, Thank You Ganesh for making a simplified explanation of a deep complex topic. I am from Singur, West Bengal and I absolutely agree with each and every point you explained. I just only say, our generation are the direct victims of a policy failure and bad governance system, But the Irony is that the government justify their communism ideology through education system like The Singur Andolon (Revolution) is a part of Government School Text Books. That's why the majority people of Bengal don't understand the pros and cons between two systems and fall on the communism anti capatilistic mindset. Here I quote Mr Sanjeev Sanyal's Comment "People of Bengal has a proverty of aspiration" and that's the root cause of this problem. I watched the Mr Sanyal's podcast episode with you and trust me as a bengali I can also relate his pain and sadness when he talks about Bengal. After all he also is a Bengali guy. And lastly, talking about corruption and politics, just like before the 1992 pre-liberation era India has the black economy and mafia raj issue the same things we faced as a byproduct of the poor economic and communism mindset. Isn't it surprising that the states which gave more Finance ministers ended up looting the other states while making Maharashtra and South India rich... 1. CPIM introduced land reform policy in Bengal. Because of that all big farmers were told that they can't keep land above some certain limit. My Grandfather was a big farmer ( like you see in Punjab and Haryana now ). Our land was snatched from us forcefully by the CPIM govt. with the help of political power and party cadres. If a industrialist wants to start a company there and wants to buy 200 acres of land, previously he had to talk to approx. 3-4 big farmers, now they have to convince 200 farmers, each of whom have more or less 1 acres of land. These small farmers are the creation of CPIM govt. Now Mamta Banerjee tells that I won't talk to farmers ( because she made an image of herself as farmers' and poor men's messiah to stay in power ) but Industrialists are free to talk to farmers and buy lands, now tell me which Industrialist wants to have that head-ache to convince so many farmers ? So, it's completely her marketing gimmick to stay in power in the name of Bengal Business Summit to woo the young and urban voters. The result of the summit is every time a "BIG ZERO". 2. If you want to start a big business in Bengal, TMC's pet political mafias will come to you and demand few crores of money to start the business there. Who wants to give that much amount to such people ? 3. I don't know how much you observed from outside ... but ... trust me, as I'm from Bengal .... 90% Communist leaders changed their RED-shirts and joined TMC wearing GREEN-shirts and trust me bro when I say this, right now 80% of the TMC party filled up with such Communists. So nothing changed. It's just the old wine in new bottle. Whatever Bengal got today, that's because of ambitious, enthusiastic, legendary Bengal Congress Leaders of 1950's and 60's but the same Congress was first back-stabbed by CPIM, after that TMC and after that Bengal congress was back stabbed by Mrs. Son!a and Rahu| himself. They never wanted to revive Bengal Congress but keeps Bengal Congress as B-Team of TMC so that BJP can't rise up in Bengal. Who suffers ? It's us, the 2.5 crore population of Bengal who voted for BJP in the dream to have industries in our state just like Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh etc.
