Sid the kid has always found that special something to draw from for the big games, just like Orr and Lemieux. McDavid is so gifted with talent and in this latest run for the cup he was doing this in games 4 and 5. Then nothing. When everything was on the line he didn't bring that extra. McDavid deserved the Conn Symthe trophy for his performance throughout the playoffs....no doubt. But this was McDavid's chance to elevate his status to be another piller in the GOAT category like Orr and Lemieux who dominated the game anytime he was on the ice. McDavid even surpassed 2 of Gretzky's records in a time when scoring goals is much harder than when Gretzky accomplished his feat. McDavid has been around long enough to be compared to Crosby and hasn't quite done it, Sid has 3 Cups & 2 Conn Smythe trophies to his name, McDavid is still so far away.

It will be his 10th season next year. He's almost 30. Yes, he's still in his prime, but you only get so many chances. The greats that he's compared to all won Cups by the time they were his age. Gretzky was in LA and done winning Cups by his 10 season. Crosby won his 2nd Cup in his 11th. At this point, I think McDavid only wins 1 Cup and it might not even be with the Oilers. Normally that would be fine, but when you consider his caliber you kind of expect more.

He has taken 10 years to get to this point - and look at the cap situation his team is in to get to this point - the team's future is not brighter . Ken Holland gave some very generous contracts to players that are very overvalued for a long time, they have to devote a huge $ to Draisatl or lose him -and that is a tough call

You can't have a "legacy" in any team sport without winning a championship. Does anyone care that Marcel Dionne scored more points than Mario Lemieux and Sidney Crosby? Does anyone who follows basketball care that Karl Malone scored more points than Bill Russell and Larry Bird. Without winning a Cup McDavid only will have accolades not a legacy.

Dionne is a way worse player than Lemiuex or Crosby though... If he was on their level and was disregarded because of no Cups that would be one thing, but he is nowhere near the players those guys are (especially Lemieux). Dionne won zero MVPs in his career, and 1 Art Ross (that he should have lost). He was not an all-time great like McDavid is. McDavid has 5 Art Rosses and 3 MVPs, there is only 3 players in history with at least those totals: Gretzky, Lemieux and Howe, aka the 3 best forwards in history. He is in a completely different league than Dionne. Having no Cups is about the only thing they have in common.

As a couch GM I stand my ground. Edm and Tor are not that far away from each other cnstruction wise. The difference is more about tactics and how you play the team. As we saw at best Oilers play. But still the bottom 6 lines didn't give help apart from short times. 5-6 D shouldn't even make the team. Skinner was good enough (Kuemper likes) to win but that needs better scoring. If you took away Drai and McD from Oilers, that team would have absolutely nothing, NOTHING! That's the impact they have in this team. Where as Panthers stars Barkov/Bennet didn't need to score every night as they got help from others. I'm confused how badly Holland built the D core Bouch, Ekholm and Broberg fits the bill but Ceci, Deharnais...awful. Nurse was liability very big parts of the finals. As was Ekblad as well with badly timed pinches at times.

He won on statistics - even though statistics do not equate to winning...Winning is the objective, remember? Not your hockey pool...Barkov is your MVP for his two way play, for being his team's best player in EVERY series, and shutting McDavid down in 5 of 7 games.
