I think mittens objective is to maintain advantage while leaving as meny pieces on the board as it can. I've seen it repeatedly trap pieces & refuse to take.

This is correct, I am a very low level player and in the analysis after I noticed that whenever I made a mistake Mittens also made a mistake and never got a bigger than -2 lead until I blundered forced mate.

I honestly think mittens just plays theory and moves from other games that match what has been played up to that point that has the highest chance of it winning along with having an engine. it would make sense to have mittens have a very high elo that can usually win. but purposely play in a way to make the player think it can do well before crushing the player. How would it do this in code would be Look at many moves, dont play a bad move but dont play a move that removes all possible opponent moves. keeping the game in a more even playing field always trying to make it feel close until it cant and then play the best moves to destroy the opponent. well some variation of that at least the idea of using a high powered bot to "toy" with the player as best as a bot can

Something tells me that even though it seen a disadvantage, it also seen far enough ahead that it wouldn't have made a difference in the end result either because of engine's strength at out-positioning humans or due to piece material not mattering. Sort of like how a rook vs knight end game is a draw despite the rook side being 2 up. Namely because I think Mittens is designed to toy with opponents. I seen some people say they are like 500 rated and lasted 20-30 turns while others higher had about the same result. I've also seen people report draws across a bunch of different ratings. So it's like Mittens draws at times to give players hope it's possible to win when it's actually not. So it's a deviously hilarious bot idea! It's also possible that maybe if Stockfish went deeper that it actually wasn't a disadvantage. Depends' on what the evaluation algorithms for each are. I'd have to let the engine run on the position for a while to see.
