His opponent Tobias Becker was a childhood friend from me. We played chess in the same club until U12 and his father Alexander was our coach. I moved away a long time ago and haven't heard anything from my former chess mates. Was so excited to recognise his name on the starting list and then to see that you two were paired. So impressed that he is so good now and continued with chess through all these years! Falls du das liest, liebe Grüße von Stella P. Tolles Match!

9:45. It seems like White can play Bd1 and use his rooks to win your a pawn and that you have very little defense to that and the bishop on d1 looks well placed despite the fact that this is not a square where bishops tend to migrate.

Hey Eric, I’m a 900 rated player so forgive me if it’s dumb, but can you explain why Ra8 isn’t a good move in this scenario instead of Qg7? 17:40
@Andreoliveira-gl4yg
@Andreoliveira-gl4yg Жыл бұрын
Hey Zac I'm not completely sure but I think white could have responded with Qe2 attacking e6 and the black Knight, pretty sure black loses a pawn with check at the very least! Eric can give a check with Qd4 also defending the knight but after the King moves you still have to deal with the fork. Hope this helped somehow.
@zacharygrouwinkel1534
@zacharygrouwinkel1534 Жыл бұрын
@@Andreoliveira-gl4yg but e6 is already being attacked by the Rook and is already undefended. If Qe2 then black plays Qh5 defending the knight. White is free to take the pawn on e6, but after escaping a few checks the King runs to safety and white has removed their defender of h2. If white takes with Qxe6 that’s check, black plays Kg7, whites only check is Qf7 and the King escapes to Kh6 and is safe.

@@zacharygrouwinkel1534 That line is much worse than what Eric played because you loose tempi and a pawn while being checked, the rook and bishop are still forked and white can calmly defend h2 with the rook they don't need to keep checking the King

I'm confused. At 20:29 after …Nf2; you state that there's no better continuation than just moving the knight back to g4. But i was thinking that the whole point of the line was to play …Ne4, cutting off the white queen's view of the e6 pawn and reopening the threat of …Rf2+ So, uhh… what did I miss? What's actually wrong with …Ne4 there?

Qe2 and you have two pieces hanging, good habit to keep track of your loose pieces.
@undeniablySomeGuy
@undeniablySomeGuy Жыл бұрын
Because Eric felt like his Qg7 maneuver had a higher danger level. Going Ra8 would let the opponent cover d4 as well as centralize his queen on the edge of the board. If the opponent decides to target the weak e6 pawn, black has no good way to defend. (Also if you plug it into stockfish, Qg7 has an evaluation of -5 while Ra8 has an evaluation of... +6. All of white's pieces are basically as good as or better than black's as well as the powerful battery charging down the center board)
