2 hours 9 minutes and 58 seconds is very quick for a cup race. About as quick as 2021 Watkins Glen was.

59 seconds less, and if this happens next week, could be a sub 2-hour race, since the Glen is a much faster track.

Today was the best cup race on the Indy RC out of the 3. No chaos, no stage cautions allowing strategy, and no dumb restarts helped make this race great. I still think they should return to the oval but would be ok with Indy RC. Maybe Indy RC/Oval cup doubleheader is possible?

When they bring the Brickyard back, it should play out as naturally as possible, no gimmicks. 160 laps, no stage cautions (keep stages for scoring purposes), 100% strategy, and a good racing package.

Well stated on how the race felt. I think we ditch the stage cautions for the ovals and on top of on-the-fly points awards, take a bonus playoff point on for most laps led. Take an idea of old and pair it with the new system of things.

NASCAR had their day at IMS but with the resurgence of IndyCar and the Indy 500 the Brickyard will never be as popular as it once was no matter how it is promoted. The race is a money maker for IMS but the optics of empty stands for a major NASCAR race are not good for TV and the sponsors. NASCAR has a challenge on their hands.

I'd be totally fine with 2 dates at indy. indy g.p. in may with the indycars, have xfinity and trucks at irp with the sprints, midgets, silver crown, etc. And then the brickyard 400 at end of summer, with xfinity on the oval as well. The question is, would indycar purists hate having another division on track in may?
@EngMadison

Brickyard 400 without stage yellows. Keep a crossover weekend and have two of them. One at a road course like Road America where Indycar gets the Sunday time slot. The other at an oval where NASCAR gets the sunday slot.
@parker838
@parker838 Жыл бұрын
The compromise I would make would be to have trucks at IRP. Xfinity does the road course, and the cup series gets to run the oval since its the most prestige in terms of the three series. I feel like then its fair for each series and you get a race on theee different tracks so there's something for everyone

Congrats to Michael McDowell. He was the best driver today. And Joey Logano was the worst. Runs Haley into the tire barrier to bring out the only caution. Then on the restart, pulls the same move as last year. Drive full throttle into turn 1 & bang off another car to make the corner. If I was Blaney, I'd be pissed at my "teammate".

It is worth considering it for some ovals. All plate tracks (fewer cautions is better given the massive wrecks that occur) including Atlanta. I would like it go away for crown jewel events as well. The 600 at Charlotte, the Southern 500 and the Brickyard 400 if it returns. Probably Pocono as well since it is essentially a road course when it comes to pit strategy.

To your greater point re: the local and national media: NASCAR has taken a significant hit in interest in the US since peaking in 2005. I'm not interested in arguing the why/why not specific to that now (it is very complex and multifaceted) but simply put, what it meant in 1994 is no longer what it means today. In some ways, going back to the Brickyard 400 is a move to speak to nostalgia not for the 60s or 70s but the 90s when NASCAR was red hot. It's really meant for people like me from the late 30s-early 50s to make us all perk up and go "Ah, NASCAR is doing something I recognize again instead of something I don't!" At least that is my interpretation. I actually left the track Saturday (I'm one of the people who didn't come back; tickets were even cheaper on secondary market Sunday vs. Saturday) thinking I'll really miss the doubleheader weekend when it goes away even though that's happening because Milwaukee is returning and I'll be attending that race.

7:10 Brodie Kostecki had a brilliant run. They rolled the dice on lap 67, pitting from 17th, betting on the 8 car blowing up on track. Without the extra stop they could have ended up 14th. Regardless 1st cup start, starting rear in the backup car and finishing on the lead lap is outstanding. Stayed out of trouble unlike the 17 cars that finished behind them.

I thought it was a good race - a bit of chaos early - then a long green flag run to the checker. There was racing through the field - still hard to pass in these cars on road courses - but the lead 3 kept it close and interesting throughout. I am a little bit wondering why the Chevy cars ahead of the 9 were not ordered to get out of the way by somebody at GM so the 9 had a clean track to try and close on the 34. Probably doesn't change the result but it might have forced one of the two cars into a big error to make that last few laps more interesting.

I don’t think it’s a good idea to switch the 400 one year and the road course the next year and just flip flop every year. People care more about the 400 more than the road course. The oval is iconic. The IMS road course is just a random road course that’s just boring. I mean granted today was the best Cup IMS RC race from the looks of it, but I’m all for the Indy Oval for IndyCar (for the 500) and NASCAR. For Xfinity, I think they should be on the road course during the Month of May as a support race for IndyCar and race on the oval later on.

Why is alternating layouts such a problem? NASCAR isn't IndyCar, and IndyCar never should've run two infield races at IMS to begin with. NASCAR alternating layouts is the IDEAL. The oval needs to be special to INDYCAR. If other series want to run the road course, this needs to be encouraged. There is no excuse for IMS to be night race capable on either configuration. We need a 24hr race there! NASCAR alternating is GOOD!

The F1 races at Indy in the 2000's were crap. It's just "Indy" marketing that keep the this road course alive. There are so many good Street & Road courses in the USA and they pick Indy RC??? I also think if they open up the infield inside 3 and 4 for rv camping might help cuz thar big part of Nascar experience and if so have option for those fan that buy that go site in the pit grandstand , onto the race itself date need go back to 1st weekend of August , make it a 1 pm start time. I go to this race weekend and the Xfinity race typically has less fans than the Indycar race. This year, it was way less. There are two reasons: one, was definitely the threat of weather as David said, the other was the start time. 5:30pm is ridiculously late. We left because we saw weather coming and figured if there are going to be red flags, it would get too late and it might be an official race after 30 laps and wasn’t worth staying. They got the entire race in, but for us it wasn’t worth the risk. Just head out and come back the next day for the Cup race that had a decent start time.

Going up there the last two years I will say that if you are not a fan of road course racing, this sort of event won't draw you in. Nascar managed to have an Xfinity race with a pop up rain shower, rain tires able to go on cars, and nothing about that made it into the highlights. The things that make these races interesting are not what they know what to do with. But overall, as a fan experience for someone who likes both circle track and road course racing, this is a good, comfortable weekend on the schedule. Both times I have left this event pleased, but I still lament the lacking of top level circle track racing in the area outside of the 500 proper. Being said, I don't think that Nascar on the big track is the solution to that.

The "bump and runs" at the 90 degree turns are getting obvious( no brake lock ups even).There were a handful that should have been made "stop and go" penalties and this would cut down on yellow flags even more in future races.I really am surprised at the lack of race stoppages and this made the race overall watchable. Kudos to the track officials and to the drivers that decided to suck it up and not stop in the racing line after being "crashed" into.

I like the road course races but the brickyard for me is like the daytona 500. A big crown jewel. I'm upset they replaced it with the road course.

Auto racing should always be a spectacle. Nascar doesn't need Indy and vice versa.

I thought the race was great ! They should just have races on both the oval and the road course like Indycar does.

Cup needs to be on the oval and I still think Indycar and Cup need to do a double weekend it needs to be at Cota, the Glen, or maybe even Richmond

Watching the race in person and focusing on SVG specifically, he lost a lot of time when he and Bell stuck it out for 8-10 more laps than the other leaders on the first stint. At the end it was six seconds from 5th to Shane in 9th. He just spent half the race within a few seconds of CBell's rear bumper and could never get by.

He lost a couple seconds on each pit stop too. That probably cost him 2-3 spots for sure.

Yea and Marks confirmed SVG had engine issues all race but still ended up 10th.

@@nomadman5288 part of it is I don't think they had the speed limit lights as refined as some other teams; SVG said he followed the RPM lights on the pace lap pass-through the pits and Bowman was bumping into him from behind. So that was costing him a little time by not pushing the speed limit to the max.

@@mintoxace5571 Shane did say on the radio that the throttle was sticking about 10% open so I wonder if that's what Justin was referring to or something more than that.

I think SVG did a great job ...... he got the opportunity to observe up close many of the Cup contenders & P10 for his efforts. If SVG was competing for the Cup points I am certain he would have forced his way past Bell as Bell was leaving Pit lane .... If SVG was chasing Cup points he may have finished higher ..... right now it is a learning curve for him.
