Rec2020 is the limiting factor I think with the Nikons. When they can’t tune the sensors for r3d and RWG/l3G10, the Nikons will be amazing b-cams. The LUTs are a fairly close match, but definitely require some finessing to get them matching. I’m noticing highlights and some colors (especially green) that need some tweaking to match.
@GamutLUTs3 ай бұрын
they match 100% if you just use a CST from Nikon to Red and then add the RED Luts these were based off of. You will have an accurate middle gray value without highlight clipping. It looks like the Nikon LUTs didn't account for the different exposure variance for N-Log compared to REDLog3G10 which is probably why you see some issues with the Highlights for the most part.
@TylerEdwards3 ай бұрын
@@GamutLUTscan confirm they get REALLY close with CST, but it’s not 100%. Some work is still needed as CST isn’t a magic bullet, but CST is what I’ve done in a few projects to get them to match though!

Very close. Look at 02:10 when you are jumping off the barrier. The red wall paint and red "RIP" graffiti looks and looks orange/red on the Komodo (left) and pinkish/red on the Nikon (right). Definitely fixable but shows it still needs a bit of love.

I’ve been thinking, and my theory’s been proven: you don’t need a fancy RED camera or high-end gear to get the look you want. Just some good luts that delivers great colors. It’s crazy how some companies sabotage themselves by proving it's easy to get the looks we like with luts vs. a cameras color science. I do know different cameras serve different purposes, and RED cameras are amazing. But for regular folks like me, I just want the color science and look we see on KZbin or from our favorite creators. My dream camera is simple: a small, Komodo -style camera-something like RED Komodo X but affordable-that lets you swap lenses, has great battery life, and captures RAW & Baked in looks. Imagine a camera with built-in film simulations like Fujifilm, or popular looks like teal and orange & others. You could shoot with ease, and it’d have everything built in-mic, autofocus, SD or Express Type B for higher codecs, all the basics.

Sorry and nothing personal against the KZbin community, but aren't some people getting a bit annoying by suddenly seeing their KZbinrs m that they follow for specific brands or cameras posting about a brand that they never even mentioned on their channel? It's almost like they are trying to get Nikon's attention now that they own the ball and not RED. I don't know, just my thoughts.
@bwashmedia3 ай бұрын
I can totally see how you could think that. I typically try to stay camera neutral, but obviously i have a bias to Red. I hope the information is at least helpful. Also I can only speak for myself here but I do have a relationship with Red and Nikon separately, but it is most important for me to be truthful and clear in all my content. Hope this makes sense.

@@bwashmedia Nothing personal, like I said before, but I do enjoy your channel as well as Carlos's and Scott's because I appreciate the technicality and dynamics. I was driving home from a shoot and saw your video and Scott’s about the Nikon LUTs. Also, since Scott is very active in the RED FB group, i believe we all have seen him almost aggressively defending RED. And now, Nikon bruh, a guy who would tell you that RED is the only camera worth anything in the industry is now advocating for a brand that, a year ago, wasn’t even on the industry's radar for anything other than some fine glass and the specific community of robotic arms and such. Not saying this is you as well but I guess as a big YT consumer am being overwhelmed about the whole Nikon RED thing hahaha But let’s see what the future brings us.
@DreamReleases3 ай бұрын
And couldn't one simply put the LUTs in any camera that accepts and uses them, ie Panasonic, Canon, etc? If not at the moment, they will soon be. One can install LUTs in Canon cinema cameras including the c70, R5mkII, and of course Panasonics. Nothing prevents anyone from installing the same RED/Nikon LUTs in another device. If the goal is to sync the "Look" across platforms. We shall see in a few hours if we can shoot that "famous" color science (Look) on any platform that accepts the LUTs
@GamutLUTs3 ай бұрын
True. You can just take the Rec709 RED Creative LUTs that these were based off and just do a Color Space Transform in Resolve from a different camera to REDLog3G10 and then add the LUTs. They will all look the same as long as the color space transform is correct for that sensor. That looks like what they actually did for these Nikon LUTs.

This is inaccurate way to test the LUT. On RED Komodo you're using Canon RF, in Nikon you're using Nikkor lenses. Different lenses, different color rendition.
@jukpulfer3 ай бұрын
then again we are also talking about two wholly different camera systems that dont even share sensor size, so by that logic, even with the same lens, it would be an inaccurate comparison due to the performance differences of the lens
