Of course I would of appreciated more but that beautiful Oled screen plus the added few inches to make it a 7 inch screen while my 1st gen switch heat vents was cracked and joy cons were a drift and sliding off the rails.....A perfect opportunity for the upgrade. Since I upgraded my oled switch is still in great condition. A much better product IMO and worth the 350. No regrets here.

This is just so your nso games can carry over saves. That way you can pick up where you left off in earthbound on the new switch. Or it will be digital only backwards compatible. I'm not hopeful.

I do think this basically confirms backwards compatibility. You don't purchase NSo, you subscribe to it. This is a big company, they formulate these things very specifically. But I do think you're right with your GB-GBC-like theory, that is also a thing I've been thinking about for years. but if they say it's not bound by traditional console life cycles, this implies they would support the current Switch for even longer than usual, like 4-5 years or so, since 2 years for cross gen is completely normal and nothing new.

For sure, I won’t buy a digital only from Nintendo. If they do that I’ll just emulate on my steam deck. I already have that as my digital system. I want physical games, the push for digital only is not a direction I’m willing to go.

I feel like this is the second time the internet has hashed this out. Didn't Nintendo say roughly the exact same thing earlier this year? And just like, earlier this year, the answer is "maybe". Internet gonna internet I guess. If this is the route they are going down it will be more like the GBA to GB/GBC rather than GBC to GB. The GBA was a hugely powerful console compared to its predecessor’s. It’s not a bad shout though to be fair - the Switch is huge right now, they just have to make sure they don’t do another Wii U.

At this point; Nintendo would have to do some incredible word gymnastics to explain why the next gen Switch (and every system after) doesn't have backwards compatiblity, after showing this picture and saying what they said. They literally spelled and acknowledge that 3 out of 4 of the major functions of the Nintendo account; is directly tied to games purchased on the current Nintendo Switch. It makes no sense for them not to have it and Nintendo not ever dropping the price of their games, as well as having Mario Kart and Smash Still sell them as if they just came out, shows the way other companies can do the same, with GOOD DLC.

Am I crazy? I don't remember hearing Nintendo saying anything about a Pro Model. Closest thing was their usual "we are looking for new ways to further our system". I DO remember Nintendo saying that they would support the 3DS family well into 2021. Then the Nintendo Switch sold MASSIVE and that support for the 3DS went away. So when I see Nintendo saying they want to continue support on an old system I 100% believe in that statement, up to a point.

I’ve said this all along all the need to do is release the SNS: Super Nintendo Switch Or the Super Switch Don’t call it switch 2 or switch pro go back to the route NES SNES. Full backwards compatibility and the thing will explode. Know games manufacturers as a whole though I would be surprised if physical media doesn’t carry over just your online account and any digital content. If this happens it will suck as a massive fan of physical media still it would be sad and would stop me buying the new console as it would be good to play my back log on a new system when new titles are low like any new console launch.

The switch 2 will be great if it uses the same game cartridge or similar like with the game boy and the advance so we can play our already owned Nintendo games slightly better but I think the backward compatibility would only be online content/ digital stuff only

I hope it uses similar cartridges but not the same, the cartridges have to get cheaper, this is a big problem with physical media on switch right now. I hope it's like the 3DS, where 3DS and DS cartridges fit on the same slot, unlike GBA and DS, that had separate slots for past systems.

Also, why would Nintendo do that if you already have the technology to do bc in the console itself, and Nintendo already did previous gen game cartridges going in the same slot for the new ones with the 3DS. If it was an accessory, it would only limit the amount of people that can use it, for a very small amount of profit on the hardware. It would be much more profitable for Nintendo to have it on the console by standard, so everyone is inclined to continue to buy old Switch games.

Nintendo tried the incremental upgrade thing with NEW 3DS and it failed. It wasn't worth the investment. Just make the system backwards compatible.... Or have a Switch game reader that uses the cartridge as a license then allows you to download and play the Switch 2 code

I don't only think backwards compatibility will be important for Switch 2, but base Switch will still be home to smaller-scoped ports like Luigi's Mansion 2 HD and indies. In fact, I dare to say the last Switch to be discontinued will be the Switch Lite, as it will still have a spot in the market as both the cheapest option and the smallest portable; it will be like the Vita in a way. There are also still some things they can do to the hardware; make a Switch Lite OLED and put a 6" screen on it. Or remove the cartridge slot to make it even smaller and slimmer, it would take care of the bezels and you'd use the same 5.5", it would cost even less to manufacture. Or ditch the screen/battery entirely and make a "Switch TV".

It should be easy read: Nintendo will continue to release games for Switch even after a new console comes by, just like they have done with ALL their previous consoles and handhelds. On the purchase history, I guess you are right, it refers to the NSO and that save data. Still, save data from Switch ports would he interesting to see.

the "Switch Pro" or "Switch 2" will be basically the same design and functionality; but I think it will be more that just a "incremental" update, it will likely have a new, more powerful GPU and CPU, have more internal RAM, possibly improved Joy Cons with the "hall" sensor thumb sticks, and maybe a greatly improved User interface for organizing games on the console. *there are 132+ MILLION Switch owners** and they all have sizable collection of Switch games (both physical and digital) so *it would be best for maintaining the trust and consumer satisfaction* would be to make the "Switch Pro" or "Switch 2" be backwards compatible with physical and digital Switch games IMO, Backwards compatibility IS A MUST HAVE FEATURE, if they want people to consider "upgrading" by buying a "Switch Pro"

Your theory is exactly what they tried with WiiU. I think it is a good strategy. The problem with the WiiU came down to bad marketing (including the name) and lack of seamless ecosystem instead having two online stores, two system menus, essentially treating it like two systems in one.

I commented on this on one of your previous videos. Nintendo always has a gimmick for a system and they typically have a way of connecting libraries. GB to GBC to GBA GBA to DS DS to DSi to 3DS/2DS NGC to Wii Wii to Wii-U The idea is to keep selling the precious software catalog plus the new catalog until the install base gets sufficiently large. That is what Microsoft has figured out with their connection to XB1 and Now the series systems. They can sell old games and new games

There's a huge confusion regarding the power of the Game Boy Color. No, technically the Game Boy Color isn't any more powerful than the classic Game Boy (in fact, other than color, the specs are the exact same), the reason the Game Boy Color had A LOT of exclusive games (you couldn't play them on a regular Game Boy) was because a lot of developers wanted to take advantage of more color, kinda like what happened when Super Game Boy (an SNES accessory) was released (a lot of developers wanted to take advantage of more colors so a lot of games were developed with Super Game Boy support in mind) but in the N64 era, there wasn't an equivalent of the Super Game Boy, at least, not until Game Boy Color got released, so the problem was solved and much like before, a lot of games were developed for Game Boy Color. The Game Boy Advance was in development before the Game Boy Color was even planned, so in the eyes of Nintendo, the Game Boy Color is just a revision of Game Boy. Fun fact: Nintendo actually tried to repeat what they did with Game Boy Color since the DS (apparently the GBA too, but the DS came first and it was so successful that the project got scrapped, really interesting). The DS got the DSi and the 3DS got the New 3DS, but unlike with Game Boy Color, most of the features in those revisions were left unused, so those revisions had very few exclusive games, not a fair comparison at all. Another fun fact: DSi and New 3DS were designed to not just be more powerful systems than the original versions, but also to catch up with Nintendo's home consoles by adding features exclusive to those at that time (the Wii had Wiiware games so the DSi had DSiware games, the Wii U had more buttons and an NFC reader included, the New 3DS got additional buttons and an NFC reader put into the touch screen) so if the Switch gets a revision like the DSi or New 3DS, it would be the first time that Nintendo, rather than trying to catch up with their current home console, they will try to catch up with the competition (I can already imagine a Switch console with more power and PS5 triggers).

The Gameboy Color’s processor has a higher clock speed and it also has more ram than the original Gameboy. That’s why it eventually gained so many games that don’t run on the original system. But still, it would be cool to see a backwards compatible Switch 2 that just gains more power and maybe an extra feature or two like you said.

Something interesting to note is that the Game Boy Color and Advance wouldn't have existed if Virtual Boy was successful, because after that failure Nintendo wouldn't have a portable device on the market unless it was the outdated (at that time) gameboy. It's very likely we'll see a GBC-like upgrade, good but not substantial.

Sorry for your loss. Obviously the concept of making the system more powerful and games play better isn't new (PS4 Pro, Xbox One X). The problem is 1. down the road people will want to utilize that power to make games which don't even really run under the old Switch hardware, so it is still a different system and 2. being 100% backward compatible means you are stuck with restrictions to the hardware, operating system, and controls/gameplay which don't really allow for large scale innovation. While PC hardware has done this for decades, innovating is part of what has allowed consoles to compete graphically with PC's which are far more expensive and have better raw number "specs". Still, you never know what a company will decide to do. Switch was certainly popular enough Nintendo might just want to iterate.

Thanks RTG, no stranger to the tin-hat theory. Before the current set of leaks, I thought the next system would have been more like a home console that integrated the current switch for the sole reason that non one wants to start again to build a user base when you already have 130 million users of your current system. So, I think focusing on the account over the system as the connection is smart and you really only have two options--both require backwards compatibility. (a) The next system is just a sleeker, more specialized switch. You can play most of the games on the old system, but the shortcomings are apparent. At some point, those folks are going to upgrade. (b) You come out with a system that has a bunch of new features, but as long as it still runs the old game, just better, then you still keep more or less the same user base and there is no reason to talk about a "next console" or "switch successor" in either case. Best to you and your family. You have been the video game uncle in our family, so keep keeping it real.

I'm still unsure if the switch 2 will be backwards compatible but if you can save your switch info for the switch generator we have now then I think the next switch should be backwards compatible. They could do something like PlayStation make new games for the new and Old console. We will have to see what happens when the switch 2 fully releases. Now I don't see the point in the next generation of the switch having to screen because that would be like going back to DS when we're trying to make a bigger and better system.

But Nintendo have been doing this except on some consoles. But remember you could still play Wii on the WiiU, DS on your 3DS. But some tittles exclusive to the new console. So it can be a new thing, still using cartridge for switch. You would be able to play Switch games and also have exclusive games for the new console. My condolences to you and your family!

The DS system had backwards compatibility all the way back to GBA. Even though the home consoles didn’t, I think consumers think of the switch as much a portable system as a home console. In my mind that justifies backwards compatibility.

I want backwards compatibility more than anything else. I always argue for it with new consoles. However, it's not a gotcha. The ps3 had psn accounts but the ps4 was not backwards compatible with the ps3. All that data stayed with your psn account however. At any rate, backwards compatibility is the way to go if they want an expanded user base VERY quickly. Sony learned that. That is a big reason as to why the ps5 is backwards compatible with the ps4. Nintendo has learned this in the past as well. In the case of the switch, that was a massive architecture overhaul from the wii and wii u, so I understood very much why it wasn't possible with the switch.

It sounds like they're saying they're going to make Switch games that will just run better on the Pro model, not Pro-only games. Then wait for tons of people to get the Pro model, maybe a year or two, then release some Pro-only games once people have made the transition. This still sounds like backwards compatibility. This also sounds like jingle jingle. "Ignore our community guidelines against emulation and youtube content again when we talk about new Switch Pro information. Please understand." Jingle jingle.

I mean is very likley to happen I am pretty usre if not the change to cardridges the switch would have been backward compactable to the wii or the 3DS if not for the far differences in hardware

I think the *New* Switch makes a lot of sense. They did it with the 3DS. I think the Switch is too successful for them to want to move on completely just yet.

They're not going to go in the direction of an incremental upgrade, not with how much they love to introduce new things that nobody asked for. It also doesn't mean backwards compatability. What's most likely is the new system will be a brand new concept but they'll keep the switch around, like what they promised to do with the GBA when they announced the DS. That way they can keep the sales of the switch rolling if people don't like the new concept and they can drop it as fast as the WiiU while still selling switches until the next console releases.

Why would anyone think a Switch 2 wouldn’t be backwards compatible with the Switch? Nintendo systems that share the same name have been backwards compatible with their namesake since the Gameboy Color came out in ‘98. The Gameboy systems were all backwards compatible with the previous ones. The 3DS can play DS games. Wii U can play Wii games. It’ll be backwards compatible. They’re going to handle the new Switch systems like they’ve allows handled their handheld line...because it is their handled line. They’ll release a Switch 2, it’ll be more powerful, it’ll play Switch games which will run better on the new system, and it will have its own games that’ll be beyond what the Switch can do.

The problem with the incremental hardware being compared to smartphones is compatibility. Game developers for smart phones need to account for people with old and weak phones, so the purposely make the games lower powered and if Nintendo did that it would be the same situation. You'd have more powerful hardware that would rarely be used.

I reckon we'll be able to download certain titles onto our systems at a high cost. Say you can play BOTW on switch 2 but it'll cost you £50 to download it. Did you know Blue Meanie was supposed to go over Hogan in 03 brother

As you have already said. Covid has simply postponed the idea of the Switch Pro. I think that games have already been developed for this, which already exist on the current Switch. What else are the options for some newer games to choose between performance and graphics?
