It’s 20$ for a year, but even then I feel like it should be free, like with the online services that the Wii, DS and DSi, Wii U, 3DS and 2DS systems all had. All you had to do was connect to a local wi-fi connection, and depending on the system, and bam! You were good to go. I personally plan to get 20$ eShop Gift Cards each November or so, that way I can add the funds and renew the subscription when it expires.

This is why physical media and emulation should never die. You legitimately cannot rely on companies of any kind to maintain their own library when their first priority is money. This is especially true with digital only titles and subscription-based availability because once they're gone they will become abandonware.

That's a good guess, but nothing is stopping them from selling the games at the same pace WITHOUT a subscription model. The only difference with the subscription model is that you don't OWN the games. Once the subscription service shuts down all your games are gone. For good. At least with their previous model you could actually go back and re-download them as many times as you wanted as you were renting them indefinitely

@@itsmesteve1081 It's not a guess, its a solid explanation of Nintendo's strategy. If they were to resell these games, people can buy them but you don't bind them as customers. They just buy them and buy the newer triple A titles on their PS5, and it's the new games that consume ressources that the company needs to get paid off. Since your saves are bound to a subscription, you will always have to buy Nintendo and subscribe to continue where you left off.

The reality is the fans have one thing Nintendo has long since lost: Passion. When you have passion for a game or project it shows, when you're trying to just make bank with minimal effort, it shows even more. Nintendo's majority Switch lineup has been nothing but cashgrabs and not much of actual value, the list of games I can name off the back of my hand that aren't cash grabs and are actually good games on the Switch that are exclusive to the Switch (Meaning BoTW is excluded from this list), and those names are: 1) Age of Calamity 2) Link's Awakening 3) Pokemon Legends Arceus 4) Super Mario Odyssey These are the only games on Switch that are made directly by Nintendo that DON'T feel like cash grabs for the Switch. Ultimate 100% felt like a cashgrab with all that paid DLC and the world of light was mid as fuck. I mean no disrespect to Sakurai, but Subspace will never be topped.

That ending really does drive the point home, and I'll admit I'm kind of guilty of that myself. Nintendo knows people will eat up what they put out. It's unfortunate but even releasing things like the GB and GBA games to the switch online service was kind of done when they weren't having a bunch of heavy hitters on the horizon. They are keeping virtual console and certain game releases in their back pocket because they know if they release them at the right time people will eat it up, and they are right. It's a business tactic, one that while I don't like because I prefer to just buy and own my games, it works and it works to great effect. They won't change their tactics until the consumers do which sadly likely won't change for a long time.

At first, I was into the idea of NES and SNES games being a part of the Switch Online service and it providing some value for the twenty dollars a year they were asking for. But after months of having been drip fed more games into the service, charging extra for access to gameboy advance games and the ability to rent DLC for a few of them, AND having that done while they close down the stores that had heaps more games to choose from and actually own... It's grown to be rather tiresome and aggravating the more this continues on. It makes even LESS sense too since they've shown themselves of being capable of doing just that with their Arcade games AND a lot of the NeoGeo games too on the Switch eShop. So they really have no excuse there.

I genuinely believe that NSO, atleast in part, was responsible for the closure of the WiiU and 3DS eShops. The higher ups at Nintendo were probably throwing a fit that their shitty subscription service wasn't getting the money they wanted, then they saw the virtual console games on the other systems and thought by shutting them down, they would be able to force more players to migrate to NSO. If you shut down services like these and give your consumers an alternative that's worse, then you lose the right to bitch about piracy on these old systems.

Those companies can sell groups of older games together at a higher base price instead of people only wanting to get a couple titles. Emulation will always be morally correct, and I'll probably stick to buying only exclusive games from them in physical format as long as it's available. Since their exclusives are the sole reason for me owning a Switch. Everything else are available on other platforms. Cause like the Steam Deck and the recent Asus Rog console, along with other portable handhelds that are steadily improving; I hope it'll at least make Nintendo sweat, knowing there are other ways we can play their legacy games on the go, besides their slowly aging Switch.

Just so you know the craziest thing about the switch is if you were to jailbreak it, where you can easily find guides to do so on google (like 1st and 2nd links easy to find), you can get emulators on the homebrew store so you can play most of if not all of those games mentioned in this video free of charge and even crazier you can actually get custom themes which Nintendo still does not offer their customers after SIX YEARS. I jailbroke my switch and it was great. Nintendo really does nothing but stifle the switches true potential and I really don't know why because profit really isn't a concern to them it seems.

I've been told that wanting Nintendo to bring back Virtual Console for the Switch makes me an "entitled gamer" somehow, even though all I want is the same thing that existed for Wii, 3DS, and Wii U. I'm not saying Switch Online shouldn't exist for people who would rather have *temporary* access to the whole library, but I'm only interested in paying once per classic game to download and keep "forever" (well, as long as the console still works) so I don't see why Nintendo is no longer giving us that alternative. Some of us just aren't interested in paying for live services just to play classic games (and I don't play games online so I have no interest in any other features on Switch Online that isn't classic game-related). Minor correction that doesn't have anything to do with the main point of the video but most SNES and N64 games were dirt cheap at flea markets and thrift stores during the Wii era, even into the early Wii U era. It's mainly the past half decade, especially during the pandemic, when prices on older games started getting ridiculous. Although, it certainly is understandable that it was easier to just download those games from the online shop rather than having to track down old consoles and individual cartridges, especially for people who were just kids when the Wii and Wii U were "current" consoles.

Remember the Classic Mini systems Nintendo started and ended between 2016 - 2017? They put NES and SNES in such amazing (and surprisingly controversial via online sales) tiny packages. Of course, those came out when the Wii U retired while the Switch was just making its way into of the starting gates with so much potential. However, given how successful both the NES and SNES were, the Nintendo 64 was the next most obvious step in the right direction. If Nintendo wanted to make at least one more mini console, this would’ve been it. Unfortunately, just 2 systems, and they just call it quits. Somehow, even before Reggie and Bowser said it, people KNEW it was never going to happen. Instead, Nintendo opted to put N64 games into a $50 annual trial in a service already beyond repair. And from the looks and sounds of things, Nintendo isn’t going to let it go even when the next-gen system launches, which won’t be too far off from now. So how can this be justified? Given they’ve actually been fixing the emulation issues, but not enough to win back audiences. Tbh, Nintendo needs another Wii U, but not to the point of a marketing disaster. I mean to sell worse than the existing Switch, but much better than the Wii U. Let’s face it, the more sales Nintendo makes by pulling crap like this on people, the more anti-consumer it becomes.

A major issue I have with this business model is that they will inevitably have to close this service one day, and for the next console, even if they keep up the subscription model they will need some way to port over ones game progress. Otherwise these are several games people might have spent HOURS playing that they will no longer be able to access. Services like gamepass give you games you can already purchase separately, so, if you wanted to, you could cancel your subscription and play the game separately. And the game is yours. Even if gamepass ended nothing will happen to that progress. But if switch online gets shut down? All of your games are lost, and all of your progress is lost, with no sign of recovering them

They didn't port old games to newer systems and slap a big price tag on it, older games were often a lot cheaper on the virtual console, and could be downloaded from the Shop Channel/E Shop at any time, regardless of whether or not you owned some dumb online membership. @bowser_56_56 nah also looking at this comment I should’ve said that “ever since the presidents of the company changed Nintendo has been very corporate and bad” They weren’t really corporate (when I mean corporate I kinda mean like lifeless,it’s hard to explain) with the Wii now to think of it nor were they with the Wii U Actually I don’t really know what I’m saying to be honest my point is what I wrote before and my comment in general doesn’t make a lot of sense any more lol

Nintendo just created a new subsidiary called "Nintendo Systems" which they own 80% of, the other 20% belonging to DeNA (the company they produce mobile games with) it'll be for quote "developing and maintaining services". Fingers crossed the current eshop & NSO just keep going forever on all future consoles (and maybe even other devices, seriously, Piracy would take a big hit if Nintendo sold their own ROMs on a PC storefront!)

I think nintendo ditched their previous eshop library when they saw the demand from fans for ports and probably thought "yeah this should be an easy way to make bank with a subscription service". And then proceeded to create a service with the slowest god damn updates known to man. might partially be because they want ppl to keep paying for as long as possible, so they could be intentionally not porting the games everyone want. also they're probably saving them for "Definitive Edition" re-releases which make more money.

I think that a way of connecting with strangers/friends is also a missing feature. There arent really any social features on the Switch. Streetpass, pictochat, swapdoodle/swapnote, and all the wacky channels on the Wii made the consoles Nintendo consoles. And I miss them alot

The reason why people complain about themes is not because of a dark mode but because there was so much customization and personality you could add on the 3DS. Nobody wants themes because they need a dark mode or something.. I'm a 3DS you had music, animations, custom icons and badges. Folders Russell a lot better because you could create them easy and they're right there on your screen as opposed to having to navigate all the way to the right just to see some folders you made on the switch

It's crazy how quickly things closed, for example there's a Switch in the bedroom on Pokemon Ultra Sun/Moon on 3DS and there are Breath of the Wild 3DS themes and everything. I believe Just Dance 2019 was on Wii U also. These eshops should have stayed open another 5-10 years. It makes no sense from a financial perspective either. Nintendo still has to have Wii U/3DS servers so people can download all the purchased games and DLC. The big difference is Nintendo can't make money selling games on those older eshops. I've responded by modding my Wii U and 3DS, they have very impressive libraries especially with rom injections and virtual console emulation. The biggest reason I see for Nintendo closing is they don't want competition with their newer services/consoles

The virtual console used to have different custom tailored emulators for each individual game to get it to run smoothly. The NSO subscription uses one singular emulator for varying results. That alone should tell you everything you need to know.

Not just Nintendo ROMs, but for some reason, Nintendo is also going after Playstation ISOs/ROMs and Xbox ISOs/ROMs, also. I get that they're trying to play the Good Samaritan for their competition, but they are clearly stepping out of their jurisdiction, as it should be up to Sony and Microsoft to deal with their corresponding ROMs.

Really, the biggest reason we can properly enjoy older Nintendo-content and related are the high seas and immense fan-effort. The official offering is simply a nice bonus akin to some additional candy. For all it matters, the service has some positives, such as the gameboy-portion surprisingly being some of the best emulation for the systems around and the N64-app having become better than Wiiu after some updates.(It launched worse than WiiU, which is still a joke because the Wiiu-emulation for the system was already poor)

I think the subscription model is superior for certain people, because I had buyer's anxiety so bad that I never purchased any of the old games on my Wii. This means that I couldn't decide what I wanted to spend my money on, so I just ended up not buying anything at all. It would've been $100 in order to get every game I wanted on Wii, and it just was a tough pill to swallow. And I didn't know if I'd even like the game. I think the base service is a no-brainer really good deal now. You may not like it, but you can't deny that having access to nintendo's first 3 consoles and their heavy hitter titles is really good for both the consumer and the company. The issue is that it is tied into having online access for multiplayer games. The games you're getting out of it sweeten the deal, sure, but it doesn't take away the fact that they're keeping key features behind a pay wall that used to be free. Annnnd it's still not getting any better. The expansion pass launching at over twice as expensive without a monthly option is ludicrous tho. I feel like it's finally "worth it" now as it's been beefed up and they actually fixed most emulation problems. But I still wouldn't try to convince others to get it. Anyway, all of this is to say, the subscription really isn't a bad idea. In fact, it's a great idea. But there's literally no reason it couldn't have been it's own thing not forcing you to pay for online access, as well as be an addition to the Virtual Console rather than a replacement. Nintendo's just makes really dumb decisions very frequently.

It's worse because it is more expensive. Remember you do not own any of the games, you are paying every year. So imagine if one year you stop paying for NSO. ALL YOUR GAMES ARE GONE. "but i payed $50 every year, for 10 years....?" Doesnt matter. the games are gone. WHEN BEFORE YOU OWNED THEM FOREVER

I think $50 for the single expansion is a little too much, but I still don’t really mind it since I only pay it yearly despite having a shitty job that has me stuck in a cycle. I think $35 would be a lot more acceptable, at the very least.
