I have always found it so crazy how Netflix managed to mess up Death Note. There were no outlandish personalities (by anime standards) nor goofy character designs. One Piece did strike the perfect balance between the ridiculousness of the anime and still grounding it a little bit in the real world. I think its because Oda was heavily involved, and it seems everyone working on the show is a huge One Piece fan, or at least bought into the vision that "Yes, these pirates look ridiculous, but let me show you how all of these characters are so dynamic and full of heart." As the show went on, I feel like the characters and sets looked even more ridiculous in live action, straight out of a cosplay convention, but that was just even more endearing and made the show more fun. I watched the show with my wife who has never watched any anime, and she loved all the character designs more than I did. The Baratie episodes are the perfect example: Zeph looks like a total clown in a vacuum w/ his mustache and hat, but when you learn his and Sanji's backstory, watch their goodbye, its full of so much emotion and heart and care that the audience ends up loving the outlandish character designs even more.

The secret sauce was a gradual ramp up of the weirdness. When we saw Arlong without context in the trailer he looked sus as hell. But after seeing 5 episodes where things get crazier and crazier, when we got to Arlong it felt (almost) natural. Right from the beginning it's established "this is a world like no other", and the more we see of it, the more we get used to the over the top stuff. In addition to that they found the balance to be faithful to the stuff readers cared about, and changing the stuff readers didn't know they could do without in live action. Especially keeping the characters mostly the same. I feel that's the biggest problem in Hollywood: They always change the characters on a basic level. They change the themes of the story. Hollywood is bored of traditional themes and characters. This adaptation showed that classical storytelling with likeable characters is still in demand. They didn't change Nami's story from being a strong women that needs to ask for help. Even the song that plays for her says: "I have always been taught to be brave and strong... to not be afraid... and look the price, the price I paid. I am barely afloat". "I sail my ship alone into the eye of the storm" They 100% understood that Nami is a strong women and that she paid the price for it. She needed to accept help. It's kinda ridiculous that I even have to say it but... Nami didn't emasculate the rest of the Crew. How novel. And for her you really can ask "Who has suffered more?" because she is not a Mary Sue. We have to be happy that they didn't change who the main character is. (Looking at you Wheel of time). It's the same thing that made GoT great: Following the Books for the important stuff. They didn't change the main character to Cersei and made her always right.

My hope is that this is remembered as the worst season of the show, that going forward they get better at finding that middle-ground of adaptation. Just a sidenote regarding Arlong's adaptation, and the reason why I personally had issues with it : it's only much, much later in the manga that the parallels with the fishmen and black people are confirmed. What that does is, it allows for some setup, and then recontextualizes some encounters in the past and gives them so much more sense. Doing it this way does change Arlong as a character and makes his drive different. Because in the manga/anime, even though he's got this past as somone who basically fought slavers his whole life, contrary to the multiple characters who were doing the same you can see that Arlong was never really ideologically driven. His motivation was always his bloodlust and his sadism, his hatred was only the excuse he gave himself to be brutal. I personally like this idea of presenting him as a "fishman supremacist" and basically a huge racist piece of shit, only to later show you that he had more layers to him. All without excusing his actions or giving him any form of redemption at that. And in general, I also think it's better that way. Because in the live action, it sort of gives the feeling that it's coming out of nowhere, isn't really adressed by anyone, and doesn't put Arlong as a character in any more meaningful place than he would have been without it at that given point. One Piece is a huge amount of things that are setup, only to see a payoff about 600 episodes later, which participates in its worldbuilding feeling huge. I personally hope that they won't follow up on that trend of blowing their load too quickly out of fear that the show will not be on air long enough for the payoff. Also props for the Nojiko explanation. I admit I was in that crowd, rolling my eyes when I saw her thinking "there we go, netflix done did it again". But I'd forgotten this was originally the whole point of Nami's backstory, and that it wasn't adressed verbally as much in the LA as in the manga. Also I hope Zoro's actor tones it down a bit, he's the only one that felt off from the original character IMO.
@Kriss_ch. Жыл бұрын
It's definitely a weird spot to put it. When the slavery stuff gets reintroduced in the manga, it recontextualizes the fishmen(in time for a lot of not asshole Fishmen in general and Hatchan's redemption specifically), it introduces a new super bad villain faction(who still practice slavery) and it shows the two meeting(_that_ moment with Hatchan). This is the leadup to the big finale of Sabaody Archipelago and everything resulting from it, and is an important part of Fishman island later on(but not _that_ much later on). But it has absolutely no place when we're building up Arlong as the bad guy of this arc. They just needed Arlong to have something to blabber on about 'cause dialogue is more affordable than action, and this was what they settled on. They even cut Hatchan, lol

@@Kriss_ch. Exactly. The way I like to see it is, it's almost like a kid discovering racism in real life. At first you don't think of fishmen as any different, and you see Arlong as just a bastard who thinks they're the strongest and deserve better just because of that. But then you get attached to a lot of fishmen, and BOOM, historical context, sociological repercussions, in a way that makes you very involved because now you see how it's been affecting characters you've cared about for a long time. The issue as it's presented in the manga feels visceral and profoundly repulsive thanks to how slow it's been cooking. It just makes it all so impactful and sudden. The manga/anime makes it feel like it breaks your innocence in a way that Live Action really failed to do with Arlong here.

I disagree with the Arlong part for revealing his backstory too soon. I can see from your perspective that in the anime they revealed it 300 episodes into the story which made it feel like a big payoff. But since we’re dealing with live action and the onslaught of terrible adaptations recently, it was clearly NOT a guarantee this show was even getting a second season. Also, the narrative change to include the fishmen-slavery storyline in Arlong’s speeches and interactions was a way to make the “big bad” of the season actually feel compelling and not some annoying bastard who abuses his power and kills innocents. I just felt Arlong was better in the live action as the major antagonist of the season’s finale because of his troubled past. Besides, at the time Oda was writing the weekly jump for East Blue, he hadn’t developed the story fully enough to realize their major potential in the later arcs; the East Blue arc at the time was just a series of semi-connected anthology stories. At least with the live-action, they already have exposure to the majority of the One Piece story, therefore they have some creative liberties to include some story arcs earlier in the present to make the narrative more cohesive to the end.

@@montenegroafro4454 You're most likely correct, it does seem like they included this bit about Arlong because they weren't sure the show would see another season. But I'd argue it's a hasty way to treat that part of the character that came out of fear and uncertainty. And yeah, Oda likely hadn't fleshed out all of the worldbuilding around slavery and fishmen at the time, but similarily you've got stuff like Sanji casually dropping he's from the North Blue some 600 episodes or so before you actually get a payoff for that. It's proof that there is a base concept, and that time only makes it feel more rewarding once it pays off. The base concept of Arlong was "he's a racist PoS", was expanded with Hachi later showing you that "actually, a lot of fishmen are cool even if they used to be in Arlong's crew." and culminates by showing you his hatred had an origin. This interpretation of Arlong IMO was also less compelling than what was originally in the manga. He was much less intimidating, felt a lot less dangerous too. All of Arlong Park felt like it didn't go for long enough to actually explore that theme as a whole. IMO it made Arlong more forgettable as a villain, almost like a generic "I'm a villain but I have a tragic backstory". when he was in fact the crown jewel of East Blue villains. One Piece shows that there are many ways different fishmen have handled their condition. When confronted with the hipocrisy of doing to humans what they've endured as fishmen, we were shown three different types of reactions. Some went "Oh damn, you're right." Others went "That's the point!" and Arlong just went "lmao who gives a shit they're humans" I feel like it's a mistake to make a very simple villain more complex, especially when your format demands that you wrap it up in short notice. But I respect your viewpoint, and if you liked it better that way I'm glad you enjoyed yourself. I simply hope the show learns to take its time with other things, and that they won't all be rushed out ASAP like this one was.

Anime live adaptation made by western motion picture, maybe. But I've watch many anime/manga live adaptation made by Japanese motion pictures, from drama, thriller to action genre, both series or movies, they are alright. Unfortunately, many of it are inaccessible via legal platform unless it's a big budget or popular, but available in Asian movies & series piracy sites. Because all start from Asian movies fans making sub and sharing it.

People do know the French made a City Hunter movie right? And was good and fit the spirit of the anime. Yes it's the norm because it's made by people trying to cash in on the franchise. You give Latin America the rights to DBZ and you'll get the best adaptation of any anime ever.

Nah. The One Piece livr action was like 7.5-8.5/10 It had some issues. What It shows is that even in the absolute best case scenario, it's pretty much impossible for any to be 9+/10 show. Garp being here is a red flag for later on.
