Did Pixar Do Buzz Lightyear's Origin Story Justice?⎮A Lightyear Review

I think I've nailed why - they expected people to care about Andy and Buzz. At this point in the fractured timeline that is Toy Story, Andy is all grown up. So it's Pixar expecting us to care about a 22 year old man's favorite toy.

I'm glad they left the real Zurg's existence open. But this was still supposed to be the movie that Andy saw in theaters back in the late 1990s. And the lore just didn't fit enough for them to say that. Also, despite the lesson, the movie really could've done better without the future Buzz plot. I actually have an idea of how the movie could've been while also giving us the Zurg we love. The movie would be the same until Buzz would get back from his final test flight. Buzz would come to discover that Emperor Zurg has destroyed the laser shield and turned the colony into a city called Z-city. (Think Aku from Samurai Jack) and would need Izzy's help to trigger a rebellion. I would also have established a division between the people who wanted to stay on the alien planet and people who wanted leave the alien planet. Zurg would use propaganda and false promises in order to gain the people who wanted to leave as his followers and have former Zap soldiers become an army known as the Z-Guard. I would also keep Zurg being from the future because of Buzz's multiple test flights with the crystal, causing an anomaly in time and space, accidentally bringing Zurg to the past. I would've later revealed that Zurg, voiced by Keith David in my version, is the great grandson of Cal Burnside, the commander who told Buzz the mission was over. It would then be revealed that the division among the people lead to protests, riots and eventually, civil war, which made Burnside obsessed with keeping order, and he believed in doing it through force and after succeeding, his family would later become leaders of a monarchy that wanted to spread their influence throughout the universe until the Galactic Alliance intervened. Before Zurg went to war with the Galactic Alliance, the anomaly Buzz caused would bring Zurg to the past to collaborate with Burnside, who would pretend to be a prisoner of Zurg to keep the people in line and ensure that there was no war by making those who wanted to leave join Zurg, and ensuring that those who want to stay are kept in line. Zurg's master plan would've been to use the lightspeed crystal to power his ultimate weapon of his Mothership that I call the Hyperspeed Cannon, a weapon with the capacity to destroy an entire planet based on the story Buzz told Woody in the original Toy Story. Zurg plans to basically ransom to keep the Galactic Alliance from interfering with his takeover of the universe and plans to test the weapon on the alien planet that Buzz and everyone is stranded on, which is okay with Burnside as he believes that the people are beyond saving due to Buzz triggering a rebellion. Another major difference would by Izzy's backstory. Making it so that she wants revenge against Zurg because she was forcefully drafted into the Z-Guard as a child and when her parents tried to protect them, they were captured. The last time she would see them was when she was being carried by a Z-Guard member, hovering through space to get to his ship to take her away for the draft, leading to her fear of space. I would've had Darby be a former convict of Star Command turned a member of the Z-Guard, but betrayed Zurg after realizing how much of a tyrant he is. As for Mo, he would've been an orphan who was drafted as a kid, but was kicked out of Zurg's forces due to his cowardly and quitter personality. I also would've built up to building the Buzz final suit for the final battle. Finally, the way I would utilize future Buzz is to have him rescue Buzz after being defeated by Zurg in the first round, only to reveal to past Buzz that he was arrested by Burnside after completing his mission for fifty years, but the anomaly past Buzz caused brought Old Buzz to the future and since then he had taken a ship off planet and lived on the alien planet's moon which would be this universes version of the planet Buzz fought Zurg on at the beginning of Toy Story 2. He would teach Buzz not to get so hung up on the past and help the people steer toward their future and help them find their own path, leading Buzz to the final battle with Zurg on his Mothership. I would also make it so old Buzz would start to slowly disappear the moment he came contact with past Buzz, as he would theorize that a time traveler cannot exist in the same timeline as a version of himself just to make his meeting with past Buzz more dramatic and sad. I know this idea isn't perfect, but i truly think it would've kept to the lore Toy Story gave us and gave us the Zurg we deserved to see in this movie. It basically would've been Pixar's Star Wars, mainly because it's obvious that Buzz Lightyear lore was inspired by Star Wars. Zurg is basically Pixar's Darth Vader. I also would've made one of the post credit scenes of Andy who is coming out of the theater with his mother and them hinting at Andy's birthday the next year, connecting to the first Toy Story, making this movie a prequel.

I think your idea, while it has is flaws, sounds like a way more compelling plot than the mediocre script that Pixar produced.

As a longtime Toy Story fan as well as Sci-Fi geek i must say: Pixar has really outdone themselves here! I've always wanted to see Buzz Lightyear's space adventures in full scale CG! This movie has it all from Lasers, Spacecrafts, Robotics to space battles with insane visuals! Plus Chris Evans really lives up to Tim Allen's original performance as the space man. It's one of the most inventive and unique productions of Pixar.... #infinityandbeyond

I think the movie was really good. Not necessarily one of the greats, admittedly. But my inner child who loved toy story, because Buzz Lightyear was my Superman, and the inner Sci-fi nerd in me loved much of what the film had to offer. I loved the space adventure. I loved the villain and how they almost did the Star Wars I am your father joke before doing a 180 and having it be even crazier. I love how much of Buzz’s dialogue in the movie is a parallel of his dialogue from toy story. Now I hope it does well enough to warrant sequels that explores the galaxy more and aliens like in the 2000’s Saturday morning cartoon because that show had some really fun characters; Mira Nova, Booster, XR, Warp Darkmatter, Nos-4-A2… It could be so much fun if it works out.

If I would have to choose between the TV show or the movie, I would choose the TV show as my Head canon. So the old Buzz light year TV show from the early two thousands is so much better.

0:37 that's exactly what I thought it was gonna be! Or at least, that buzz had ended up believing that he was a space ranger again and all of this was in his head or perception dealing with the loss of everyone he knew especially woody and the passage of time. I mean, what if the zurg in this wasn't him from the future but just another buzz action figure????

@@orecreeper2128 kids don’t see a gay couple and automatically become gay, they can take knowing that gay people exist. The gay couple isn’t anything to get upset over. If owl house and gravity falls can pull it off well, I’m pretty sure just about any kids movie/show can acknowledge them. However I do agree it wasn’t necessary nor added anything, but I think that if there’s a gay character the movie shouldn’t just “THEYRE GAY, YA HEAR THAT THEY GAY, ARE YOU ENJOYING THIS, THIS IS THEIR ONLY PERSONALITY”

I think it’s a great Buzz Lightyear movie. I understand it has flaws, but it’s just the first part of the story. I’m hoping Pixar decides to complete the story with parts 1 & 2. If anyone didn’t watch Buzz Lightyear of Star Command, there was an evil Buzz that worked with the real Zurg.

I enjoyed it but I think it didn’t have enough substance. The movie hints that Buzz feels like he needs to be perfect but doesn’t really pay it off. Since Buzz is hard on himself for his mistakes even though no one blames him, I think they should’ve added a part where Zurg is berating himself and Buzz. Then Buzz realizes he needs to move on, has to stop trying to undo his mistakes, and tend to those he let go. He tries to convince Zurg but after being haunted by his own self loathing he ain’t hearing it.

Was wondering how long it would take for somebody to comment on this. While I don’t think it was the only reason for it poor box office. Parents want to take their kids to a movie to be entertained not to teach their kids about sexual orientation. I know many parents myself included just want a good story not political pandering whether that is the politics of the left or right. Hopefully this box office is a message to stop that crap for Disney.

@@edouglasroche It literally amounted to seconds in the movie… I don’t think it’s that big of a deal. I really doubt your kids will be focused on that one part of the movie. Besides, surprise! You *will* have to teach your kids about sexual orientation eventually. They will at some point meet someone who is not straight. They might not even be straight themselves. It seems only natural to talk to them about it. Kids start realising that stuff at a really early age. The relationship shown in the movie was purely romantic. It’s not like you have to start explaining what sex is to your kid. Gay romance is not inherently sexual. It’s the EXACT SAME as seeing a chaste kiss between a woman and a man on screen. If your kids ask you just say “some people have crush on girls, some people have crush on boys, some on both”. It’s literally that easy. I hope you see that now. If you don’t, I sincerely hope your kids will be straight so that they won’t have to grow up with a parent unwilling to show them unconditional love. The existence of gay people in movies is not that “political” compared to any other character on screen. It’s not that so-called “political agenda” that bothers you, it’s the fear of “exposing” your kid to homosexuality. At least be honest with yourself.

@@locomotivetrainstation6053 I didn't care for TS3, I found Inside Out and Coco to be OK (I watched them both once and never again). The Pixar fare is not bad, it's just that I'm not going to go to the theatre for it. I just wait for Disney to stream it. I used to take the kids to the theatre for it on the day it came out.
