‘The Color Purple’ raked in $18M, the largest Christmas Day opening for a film since ’09. The movie opened at #1 but ratings plummeted the following day. The movie dropped to #4 by the third day where it remained throughout the holiday weekend.

As a FBA woman I am SICK and TIRED of seeing slave and segregation time themed movies. Their beef had 0 affect on my opinion. Are there no fresh new black stories to tell? Loved the original... I'll catch this one when it streams.

Amen!!! I thought I was the only one. I wish they would transition out of this. Black trauma and dysfunction all of the time. All the women are hypersexual, hypervigilant, verbally, physically and emotionally abusive. Black men that are sons, brothers or in the relationship with a black woman being under their control without any backbone and ultimately becoming the failed gang banger, abuser of women, repeat offender, drug dealer or drug addict. We have watch it so long until we are drunk on it and reproducing it in real time....ugggh. They don't know how brainwashing this is. With the exception of this one and a very few others, these movies are written by white people and I think it's time for black actors to demand other scripts or write some new material. Please don't give us another slave or Jim Crow movie, we get it!!!😮😳

It’s almost as if this segment of the population relishes digging their own graves with their mouths. Producers and casting directors have very long memories, especially when projects lose money and there’s someone they can blame. It’s going to be a long time before Taraji sees ANYTHING close to what she thinks she’s worth. When the Rock asked Arnold Schwarzenegger how to be the biggest star on the planet, he told him it’s simple: develop a reputation for being EASY to work with, then they’ll put you in everything. It’s the same advice Arnold got from someone else and he talks about grueling days on the set of Conan the Barbarian, crawling through rocks, his hands and knees get cut to pieces while the director ordered take after take. He smiled through it all. The Rock followed the advice and has been at the top of the Forbes list for highest paid actor for years. Apparently, “this” group didn’t get the same memo.

I don’t understand how people that listen to all these interviews of the actors can’t see that’s what they’re doing. It’s not just these entertainers. It’s all entertainers in Hollywood. Words can’t contain how delighted I am that this Film is taking a Nosedive 😊Nothing against Fantasia, may her light so shine to Eternity but Oprah and the way she treated others, particularly Whoopi Goldberg( put aside what you feel about Whoopi Goldberg Today and focus on her Performance in the Color Purple) If it wasn’t for Whoopi Goldberg’s and Danny Glover’s Performance that carried the Film neither Oprah nor those working behind the Scenes be where they are Today. Oprah behaves as though she is the Color Purple and that’s what’s wrong about it, No humility at all. So glad that not even directing The Color Purple could hand her the power of that Production . Sorry but I do not believe that Taraji is the total blame for the box office sale to plummet. For me, it was mostly the presentation. All the actors did an awesome job portraying their prospective characters. However, some scenes were cut from the original version to emphasize on the gay relationship between Celine and Shug. Also, the dance scene in the juke joint was too raunchy. I had to cover my granddaughter’s eyes. When asked what I thought of the film, I told my friends what I felt which made them decide to wait for it to be released on DVD. Oprah, if you are going to remake a movie, do it better than the original. Speiburg’s version was way better!

The Color Purple is just what I expected, the celebration of Black male degradation. Now, although it’s a fictional story no one is questioning validity of things of such happening. My problem is this movie and the original continues to perpetuate the heartless masculine Black man as law. Alice Walker herself said Spielberg twisted the story, and the great James Baldwin himself said the movie (original) was trash. This is a clear feminist movie that is guised in the white power structure and I’m sick of it

If Tariji ruined The Colour Purple's box office with her tearful revelations then good for her (although I don’t think that was her intention). Why should Miss Billionaire Oprah & Co. profit from the success of the film while the cast were paid peanuts for their hard work and performance. Look at how Oprah was thanking "America" profusely for the box office sales on the first day. If Taraji and other cast members did not financially benefit from this movie then neither should Oprah & Co. The fact that Taraji was so upset shows you how much she was screwed over just like Monique. I'm glad the movie is going to be a flop especially after the amount of money it cost to make it. This is karma for how the employees were treated by the employers, although after the way Oprah blanked and ignored Taraji, I think it's safe to say that Taraji will now get blackballed just like Monique.

I refused to go see it. I'm tired of rehashing old properties. Sure, its a musical now. Don't care. We have so many more rich original stories that can be told and aren't. Not even by US. So excuse my cynicism for a moment, but this is not a flex and certainly not a win in any category for me. These people are creatively bankrupt and I am over it. There are VERY few properties that I view that need remakes. Maybe expansions with new characters and places but not "The same story updated for a modern audience." Ughhhh....

I will say this...I loved the movie, I loved that it was a musical (maybe bcuz I come from a musically inclined family), and I loved the original even more. I dont think Taraji had ANYTHING to do with the drop in sales. It was advertised as "Christmas Day only", so everyone that wanted to see it, rushed out to do so. I do want to say, I stand with Taraji. Why promote a movie, that refuses to pay me my worth. She was told, there wasnt enough money to pay her worth. So, during a time to make them more money, let's talk about how they dont/wont pay me more money. Simple...the math was mathing then! And just a suggestion, pay her her worth now, post theatre opening date, they got it now, per Oprah's dinner speech. So what's the excuse...oh the contracts, silly me 🤦🏾‍♀️

People sign on to do jobs every day for little pay and actors are no different...it's a job which is much harder because offers are few and far between so you have to take what you can get. It's not like quitting Walmart and the next day you work for Target for 2 dollars more an hour. Just because she sucked it up for a meager paycheck to keep the lights on doesn't mean it wasn't demeaning after her resume has shown all the work she's put in or that she can't voice her worth after the job is over just like millions of people do all over the world each and every day until something better comes along. Which is why she said she may have to quit entertainment for financial stability.

Taraji's decision to speak out before the release of The Color Purple movie hurt the film. I am quite sure her being underpaid started a long time ago before Oprah. Ms. Taraji should not have accepted the role because she did more damage to the audience that might have wanted to see the movie. If I can explain to you how much heat I used to get from females when I told them I could not stand Oprah back in the early 2000´s and how phony she was. When she had Michael Jordan on her show and purposely tried to make him cry when she kept mentioning how his father was murdered I lost the little respect I never had for her. She was trying so hard to get a reaction out of this man and that was such a low blow. Anybody who doubts me find the episode on the web I am sure its there. To his credit Michael knew what she was trying and actually kept it together and did not cry. I never watched another episode of that show. Dont get me started on when she built the school in Africa and made those wack comments when asked why she was building the school there. Her actual words were They will appreciated it more! I was like huh Africa did not make Oprah rich and she is free to do with her money whatever she likes but that was an unnecessary statement. Oprah is from Chicago hood and you dont think they would appreciate a school there? When that sexual abuse scandal broke out at her school though there was not a peep from Oprah or the media. Oprah was acting like Africans are some perfect beings. This is what happens when people loose sight of themselves cause they have money.

Lady... sigh... SHIM or whatever, black men where seen as nothing but woman beaters after the first Color Purple movie came out and those kid then are the parents now so why would those black boys to men now support a remake of a movie that demonized them. Yes it destroyed families because movies were different in the 80's then today, movies were more like social media today back the. Movies can be portrayed anyway to manipulate people across the states. So People look at movies and believe that's the norm going on in real life when it's not so black men took the problem of a movie if they showed any type of masculinity so alot of black women stopped being feminine and became super masculine throughout ending 80's to becoming more in the 90's to 2000's to how we see it now almost all black women have way more masculinity than feminine energy. Believe what you want but I'm a black man that knows and nor just talking out the side if my head like a women trying to tell a man how men were treated and looked at.

Like nearly every other business, Hollywood is a numbers game. If you have the track record that shows you can carry a movie and your projects consistently breaks the bank, then you have the leverage to negotiate for bigger paychecks. But if your filmography mainly consists of supporting roles or being a part of ensembles and you’ve only ever had two, three movies where you were the “star” and those movies didn’t live up to expectations, then the studios won’t be inclined to increase your pay. You were offered an amount and you agreed to do the job for that amount…. Why point the finger at someone else for a decision you made??? 💯

Taraji can play a mentally challenged character like the one in "Hustle and Flow", a bratty baby mama in "Baby Boy", a concerned mom in "Benjamin Button", a dignified civil rights pioneer in "Hidden Figures", then top it off as a judgmental sister in "The Family that Preys". The Color Purple 2023 flopped because it's not that good, and the original film is much better. The film's budget is $100 million. As of today, it has grossed about $50 million. THAT'S A FLOP, NOT A BOX OFFICE SUCCESS!! Taraji P. Henson had nothing to do with this. Great video and content PBL! 👍🏿

Well they exceeded expectations to start, it's also balancing out. But the public wasn't expecting Taraji to express all that frustration "during" the press Tour

Very counterproductive if you ask me, she definitely hurt numbers which in turn hurts her and the rest of the cast. Wrong time. Would she have done this while promoting a film backed by white folks? Absolutely not.

Don't expect an actress that prematurely and publicly supported Jesse Smolett to make sound decisions. She is now toxic. Also, Oprah a director? Oh lord, i still remember Beloved. It's one of the dumbest movies I've ever seen. "Touch me on the inside." "Touch me on the inside." WTF!!!!!!!

I have no plans, on seeing this movie, either. I saw the original version, and I'm going to leave at that. Besides that, I'm not much for musicals. Not bc of the cast starring in this movie. Lastly, I think that the dollars plummeted, bc there are folks out here, that remember the 1985 version. Even tho I hated the role that Danny Glover, played as Mister, the film was real. It was gritty. I don't think the remake, had anything to do with Taraji Henson. Maybe folks, like myself don't care for musicals. For me, that's for Broadway. The actors are fine. Fantasia, and Coleman Domingo (FTWD) excellent actors.

The movie looked to have been initially advertised as though it was only going to be in theaters on Christmas day so alot of people I knew went thinking they wouldn't be able to see it later. I doubt it would have had as big of an opening had it not been falsely marketed that way...

Hey PBL, i love your page and commentary. I think the movie is flopping because its a musical. Alot of people don't want to see that. I seen alot of people on social media bashing it because of that. I do agree with your theory as well. I went and seen the movie and I liked it. It was different from the first but still had some of the similarities of the first.

@@elaynaaubreygonzo3744 u have to look at the generation and the target audience. Yes wiz was a great musical movie but that was a very long time ago. Taraji should have known years ago that as a woman in Hollywood, you gotta get that train ran on you and swallow up everybody in the room if she wanna get that big bag. But at the end of the day, SHE SIGNED THE CONTRACT TO DO THE FILM. So shuddup girl.

TPH isn't worth the money she wants. She isn't a "Box Office Draw", nor did her "chances to elevate" her status actually work for her (proud mary). If you look at her role roster, the "sucessful" projects had her as a side charactor or "co-star". Take that, plus her current actions of "not getting what I want" will end her carrer. Cookie Lion is not a charactor that will be remembered, or looked at fondly, Same for her role in H&F. Hidden F she wasn't the lead, Costner was (they created that charactor to carry the movie for TLP to ride the coat tales. She really is asking too much based on her track record. We didn't need a Black Rachiel Zeggler....but we got one :)

This isn’t about Taraji, people are just fed up with Oprah and not into supporting her any longer. Gail shouldn’t have asked the question about Taraji retiring. Why did Gail make it an issue? After that question then social media went to work. Gail works for Oprah, they misjudged that guestion and the backlash that came with it. Thur box office ain’t about Taraji Pink Book… no no no it’s about Oprah, it’s her stock in the black community that dropped drastically!
