@@InspiringPhilosophy Your getting close but even experts even the Jewish commentary has a flaw the thought process is not that of a native Hebrew speaker and it's dealing with translation issues that are not present for the text interpreting text in the same tongue. Hebrew has a small vocabulary and puns are part and parcel to almost everything said, for example, in the corp of a text there's a corn that smooths the corner so that you can get to the core of the kernal because the root is in the fruit in the seed. NOW, the three letter ROOT of name is SHaMaR, to guard or surround, SHeM is name or Fame that is guarded and protects, SHeMa is to call, hear, or obey, all these and more are variations on the verb root and don't have to be stated precisely to be understood in the context of surrounding words to get the nuance. Suppose I said, SHeMa SHeM SHaMaR? Play with it until the get the idea. This is why I know the name is YEHOVAH not YAHWEH although Yahweh might be used in some contexts, because YEHOVAH is the contraction or conjugation of AM, WAS, and WILL BE and contains a pun CHOVAH because YHVH dwells in deep darkness and darkness and pestilence go before him, in fact Isaiah 45:7 plays on these puns in the name. This is why the way Yeshua and the Apostles interpret scripture sometimes seems odd because in the translation sometimes the puns are not obvious for example, YOU SHALL SHMA SHEM YESHUA (Because=look up the Hebrew word) HOSHEA the people from their sins, and the angels are singing HOSHANA. It's full of puns and draws in the whole book of Hosea as a context. Again with the Phillip and the Ethiopian eunuch, he is reading about Yeshua in the book of Yeshayahu and asks if Yeshayahu is talking about himself or someone else and Philip is stunned by the Pun and tells him about Yeshua in Yeshayahu.

Your work is so great because not only are the facts straight, the truth that they reveal cuts so deep that something as seemingly irrelevant as whether or not the divine name was known by the patriarchs becomes SO important and wonderful.

This "name function" position resonates with me. I think the entire dilemma could be easily solved if we just accept that the term "El" simply meant God, that is the title of the Creator. To this day we call Him just the same, by His title, not by His Name, it's just common practice and especially useful when communicating with people from other religions who may use different names for the same title. Yes, Abraham may have known the Name, but it's unlikely that alone may have prevented him from continuing to call God by His title instead.

I agree... I also believe that if you have a personal relationship with God, then you have earn the right to speak with him on a first name basis. But since none of us have have given of ourselves totally to him then we need to stick to his title. To do this we have see ourselves as below him, not as his equal. This is the problem with religions that think they are closer than others. Ex. Allah, Yahweh, Eloim. People change things to bring them down to their level, instead of rising spiritually to earn the relationship. Quoting the word doesn't mean a thing if you are not living the word. @@InspiringPhilosophy The rhetorical question argument doesn't seem convincing to me at least but the argument from the function of the names is something that I came across a while ago and it does make alot of sense to me honestly, and I completely agree them screaming "but the redactor" every time the hypothesis runs into an issue seems far too convinent and honestly seems more like an effort to keep the hypothesis and not have to change their views on it rather than adapting with the evidence or realizing that using the redactor to solve every issue is getting old, (which is somewhat understandable as it's pretty big when it comes to how u view the rest of the pentateuch or the whole of the Tanakh in general). But all around amazing video, this series is making me rethink some of the things I thought were rock solid in critical biblical scholarship and is keeping me on my toes in terms of research and I'm ngl I fucking love it! (Srry abt the language this stuff just genuinely brings alot of excitement)

You are correct - YHWH is a purely Hebrew name/title, but the Hebrew language and the Jewish people/religion didn't exist at the time of the Patriarchs. Abraham would most like have spoke a proto-Canaanite language, which evolved into Hebrew many, MANY centuries later. This video is entirely ahistorical fiction.

I love the way you've approached this topic. It used to be an interesting question for me and my family and I remember those times where we would discuss what Exodus 6:3 meant whenever the chapter was read during our family prayers. It always seemed to me right off the bat that there was something more going on with God's statement in Exodus 6:3, especially since just 17 verses later in the chapter, Moses' mother's name, Jochebed, is mentioned as a theophoric appellation containing the divine name. It's great to see you cover those portions of scripture that are often nuanced and escape mainstream Christian discussions (being relegated to smaller forums like Hermeneutics Stack Exchange instead). They end up often used by critics to disparage the authenticity & inspiration of the Bible. God bless you and your ministry! P.S.: I don't know if you've done this but maybe you could try and harmonise Genesis 46:27 & Acts 7:14 sometime (70 vs. 75).

Yeah, even in English all one has to do is switch "I" with "did" (so it reads "did I not") to make the meaning rhetorical. Given Hebrew's structure, it seems like translation most clearly harmonizes the Genesis mentions of the name.

That is assuming that Yahudah was what Jacob actually called him. I doubt the patriarchs spoke Hebrew, at least not a Hebrew close to the Hebrew spoken at the time of Moses. Just look at how much English has changed since Old English. A modern English speaker wouldn't be able to understand it. Likewise, it is very possible that "Yahweh", "Yahudah", and a bunch more words are very different from what was actually used at the time but are just how the words spoken by the atriarchs were translated into, then, modern Hebrew.

polytheistic religions are highly changeable and adaptable, even in early written history we see drastic changes in the sumerian pantheon, so sumerian gods with qualities of yahweh could be merely the result of past contact with people who worshipped a yahweh-like god

@@malpercio123 my Christian theology is conservative . But Israel.is.named after El . The angels Michael Gabriel and Raphiel are named after El . Yhwh has pretty much all of Els titles and there's no polemics . My understanding is that you can interpret gods and angles as essentially the same thing . So the sons of El in Canaanite mythology who are lesser gods are equal to yhwhs divine council of angels . Thrones, dominions, cheruphim.seraphim.

I just knew that Moses was in direct contact with ancient myths of the sumarians, Ugaritic peoples. In many of those stories the God who we know as Yahweh is placed over top of another god (enki). What if Moses understood that enki was Yahweh. With the Angel of the Lord Moses already painted a binitarian God, where the father is in the heavens, and the Son is God on earth. Just some thoughts. Names in antiquity, and often even today, aren't merely a title but also convey the individual's essence and character. This is something that gets glossed over too often when discussing God's name, and I'm glad this video covered the idea more in-depth. As far as resolving the dilemma, I'd posit that the first option makes more sense. If we took the second interpretation to resolve the dilemma, we'd have to accept that God's nature wasn't shown to the patriarchs in Genesis, which just doesn't seem to be true. YHWH in His true essence was experienced by Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob throughout their lives at many times. Given that Hebrew, especially ancient Hebrew, didn't have precise punctuation (or even vowels); it seems very likely that passages such as this one had a rhetorical meaning that has been mistranslated. I'll leave the technical details to the experts, but whenever there's an OT passage that seems to contradict what we otherwise know in scripture, it's best to first consider how good our translation is.

Not to discount what IP brought up as that is a very fascinating perspective that I have not thought of or have read before, I personally think it is a bit simpler than this. By my name Yahweh, I did not make myself known to them: This passage is one that skeptics like to point as an alleged contradiction in the Bible. They would say, if you search for the Hebrew name Yahweh (the LORD) you would find it about 160 times in the book of Genesis. There is no denying that Abraham, Isaac and Jacob used the name Yahweh as seen in these verses: Genesis 15:7-8; 22:14; 24:35,40,42,48,50,51,56; 26:22; 27:20; 49:18. So how do you take a passage like Exodus 6:2-3 and reconcile it the many passages where the patriarchs clearly were aware of Yahweh’s name? To get to the root of this alleged problem and to not skip over what may appear to be a minor word but is in all actuality one of the most important words in the sentence. That word is “known” (Heb. yâda). The word yâda means to know by experience. This kind of knowing can be seen throughout the Old Testament to mean to gain knowledge, to understand and perceive something and to have intimate relationship with someone. When we understand this word yâda and what’s being said to Moses we actually understand clearly that what Yahweh is saying is true. If you search the book of Genesis you do indeed find His name all over the place and even find verses where Yahweh reveals His name to the patriarchs and they call Him by name but what you do not find is the type of intimate relationship we see between Israel and Yahweh. For example, let us look at the life of the prophet Samuel. As a young boy Samuel ministered and served Yahweh (1 Samuel 2:18; 3:1) but it’s clear from 1 Samuel 3:7 that Samuel did not know (yâda) Yahweh experientially. That is until after this final call. From here on Samuel would go on to have a relationship with Yahweh and receive revelations from Yahweh (1 Samuel 3:11-14; 8:7-10,22; 9:15-17; 16:1-3). Exodus 6:7 is technically the first time that God not only reveals Himself to be Yahweh but declares that Moses and the Israelites will know (yâda) Him (Exodus 16:11-12). Prior to this time, no one knew (yâda) Yahweh in this way, not even the patriarchs (Abraham, Isaac and Jacob). One last example would be in our modern day vernacular. I can say I know the president of the United States. But with out meeting him or having extended conversation or relationship with him can I really say I know him? Sure I know of him, but I don’t really know the man so too Yahweh was known of by name to the patriarchs but Yahweh did not make Himself known (yâda) until Moses. So is Exodus 6:2-3 a contradiction to previous passages before it? I unhesitatingly say no it is not once we understand what is actually being said by Yahweh.

Christadelphian founder John Thomas called this "Phanerosis", and explained a lot about the function implied by Yahweh's name!

The Christadelphian theology was created on the wild and easily discarded theory from Wilhelm Gesenius in 1833 who added the vowels to YHWH, and later retracted his theories. It was later turned into a full theology in the mid 1800s by Alex MacWhorter III who stumbled across Gesenius' speculation. In his premise is the idea that YHWH meaning "I am" being a demonic lie, which also means Christ saying that he is "I am" is a demonic lie. He reject the Septuagint in that as well and the Septuagint is the version of scriptures that Christ references. John Thomas used the works of these men to create the Christadelphians therefore that theology should be avoided at all costs.

The "Ayah asher ayah" is translated as "I Will Be Who/Which I Will Be". It was a statement related to Yahweh being "All in all" from 1 Corinthians 15!!! Just so you know, John 8:58 is "ego eimi", while Exodus 3:14 in Septuagint is "Ho On". Different Greek words, so in John 8:58, Jesus absolutey isn't referencing Exodus 3:14.

Ok, nicely researched as usual and very well presented. The tortured and fringe interpretations create possible solutions, but what is most probable? If you aren't compelled to find one consistent with your theology, the redaction of two sources is by far the most likely. It's only when you are driven by theological concerns that you think these solutions are preferred. But even if IP were right, what does this tell you about God's willingness to communicate in a clear manner? It is intellectual elitism to think a normal, non-scholar should have to accept one of IP's solutions when the simplest, most probable solution is that there is a contradiction because human often contradict each other. Reasonable people can disagree on this issue, but only one side thinks the other will burn in hell for all eternity for not coming to to the "right" conclusion.

If the Torah/Pentateuch is traditionally understood to have been written by Moses, and the divine name of YHWH was revealed to Moses at the Burning Bush, I don’t see why the early Patriarchs not knowing the divine name is a contradiction. Moses/the author could have simply used the name YHWH when writing down the stories of Abraham/Isaac/Jacob.

Interesting to note the lack of the prophetic -AH names in Genesis that we find later in the OT. Isaiah 52:6: Therefore my people shall know my name. Therefore in that day they shall know that it is I who speak; here I am. A 'name' in Biblical thought means one's essence, one's underlying reality. So 'knowing God's name' means direct experiential knowledge of God, and specifically what His Name YHWH entails. The Patriarchs didn't live to see the full manifest power of God because the promises he made to them weren't fulfilled in their lifetime. It was only later, once Israel became a great nation and witnessed the Exodus, that God became fully manifest to them as YHWH and fulfilled the promises to the Patriarchs, thus confirming His deity and mastery over nature and destiny.

Let me run a thought by you. At what point did the Hebrew language develope? Would it be wrong to assume that Abraham did not speak Hebrew? Even if a sort of proto-hebrew was in use at that time, it seems doubtful that it would have the same vocabulary as the language spoken in Exodus. When we read the words of Abraham in Genesis, wouldn't they be a translation into Hebrew from whatever language he was speaking? If this is the case, then isn't it very possible that Abraham didn't know God by the name "Yahweh" but by whatever name or title that was later translated to "Yahweh" in Genesis? Couldn't the same be said for all of the patriarchs?

the Gnesis 15:7/Exodus 6:3 issue can be explained easily In Exodus, the text reads, "i APPEARED to"....so, we are talking about something visual consider it this way, when god appeared as El Shaddai, he would appear with a yellowish glow.....but when appearing as YHWH, he would appear with a blue glow obviously, i am using color merely as a quick concept. Throughout scripture, god appearing to people, he takes different forms. This would present the idea that, "el shaddai" had a specific form.....but that, despite APPEARING as el shaddai to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, he made his NAME YHWH known....but not the appearance

In the NT, Our Lord frequently uses expressions about making God's Name known or God's Name glorified or God's Name great in Israel. Of course Israeli Jews of AD30 knew that the term "Jehovah" was used for the Jewish God. What Christ clearly meant, was that He was manifesting the Name in some hitherto unknown way. Likewise, making your name known in the Ancient world often meant something other than introducing yourself and saying your name.

A friendly reminder that before the scriptures became a written book they were passed along orally from generation to generation. The tanakh, aka 'old testament', was written before the collection of the new testament but even the tanakh itself came later after the tradition of oral repetition of the histories of the people. To say that people cannot or are unable to edit the scriptures to suit their personal beliefs and choices means that you don't understand the history and context of the scriptures prior to their being canonized into stone as a book. Prior to the written scriptures the peoples of Israel and Canaan and the general vicinity used to follow different gods and would change the titles of the gods that they worshiped to elevate one over another. This is why Yahweh was given the titles of former gods who were supplanted by him. It's been a constant war of reputation and power between the many gods but prior to the creation of all these gods and the war between them there was one God who was seen as the eldest and the most high in the Pantheon of God's. His name was EL elyon 'The LORD most high'. Every one of the many gods in the region was competing for the status of the supreme LORD, all capitals. Aka Lord of Lords and King of Kings. EL was recognized as the rightful 'father' of all elohim aka "gods" which is why the gods are referred to by his title in a plural form, EL-ohim. The father of Jesus was described by Jesus himself when he said, "you have heard it said, 'eye for an eye', but I say..", This is a direct contradiction against the God known as Yahweh who preached an eye for an eye against even the children of Israel. It has been a known fact that throughout the history of Israel they have repeatedly changed the name of their God to suit their current religion such as baalism, asherism, and more. Even Adonai is a carry over name from another deity related to Baalism and the bull headed God. This is why the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet, A, is the image of a bull's head as is immediately evident in the original Phoenician pictograph. The letter A is the bull's head and it stands in opposition to the identity of the Father of Jesus the Messiah. Despite this the Israelite people have base their entire identity on these many gods and have adopted the names of these gods as their own and even replaced the name of the Lord most high with the names of other gods which is an act of supplanting the actual God in a rebellious fashion. So either the patriarchs of all of the children of Israel were worshipers of a false god known as EL or the children of Israel have turned away from their God to follow after other gods because remember the patriarchs themselves repeatedly state that they worship EL Elyon and that the God of the patriarchs is EL Elyon. If you actually read it in the original Hebrew it states that EL is the supreme god that the Father's of Israel worshiped. The way most people get around this is that they say, "that was the former title of God before he revealed his name to his children when he called them out of Egypt and he called himself Yahweh", and yet the people of Israel themselves referred to El Elyon as, "the weak God", because he did not save them from being scattered and divided and from being conquered. Yahweh came and gave them their new salvation and thus they renamed the god of their scriptures, in their oral traditions, into Yahweh. So eventually when they began to write down the name of God and his titles they attributed the names of all former gods to Yahweh in that process of supplanting the former supreme LORD EL and replacing him with the new military focused and conquering King. This is the same reason why the Jews were expecting a military leader in their Messiah and why they rejected the one referred to as Jesus.

In the end it doesn't matter which name was used for God - God also existed long BEFORE Judaism and Christianity, since the creation of the cosmos and the world. The Creator God himself certainly does not call himself YHWH or Alah or anything else. Not even Jesus ever mentioned a specific name of his "father", he called him "Abba"! It is important to realize that there are no other deities besides the Creator, no matter how you name God!

Yep, Yahweh is just one of the 70 sons of El and Asherah originally described as the sons of god in Deuteronomy 32:8-9, but this was removed by a later emendation to the text including similar references in Genesis, Psalms, Kings, Job, and most everywhere else throughout the bible after the conversion to monotheism because it revealed there wasn't only one god but that El-Elyon, the most high god (Elohim) was El, son of Uranus... not Yahweh. El was the name of the 'Supreme God' of the Canaanites and who was also worshiped by many other people throughout ancient Mesopotamia and the Levant. The goddess Asherah (aka Ashera, Asherat, Athirat) was El's consort who later on became the consort of Yahweh. Together, El and his three wives had over 70 sons that comprised a pantheon of gods known as the Council of El or the 'divine assembly of gods' described in the bible. Yahweh was the chief storm god of the Shasu nomadic tribe before being adopted by the Israelites of Canaan as their national god, with El eventually being absorbed by Yahweh and worshipped as the only god. All this is evidenced by the ancient tablet text found at Ugarit.

Maybe God allowed the mistranslations like this to occur that made it look like contradictions are there so that people who ask too many questions and who pay too much attention to details would lose faith. I'm of the Opinion that the Patriarchs saying the name Yahweh was a later addition by a Israelite scholar when they updated Genesis to Hebrew or Moses attributing quotes to the Patriarchs after the fact (this being after he learned the name himself). Because Yahweh is Hebrew and more than likely Abraham and his immediate progeny would not have spoken Hebrew but something more akin to Sumerian, Akkadian, or Elamite.

And wouldn't taking actual action during the blood libel, Inquisition, Thirty Years War and schisms, be a bit more direct? And less messy too, maybe. @@unclesalty7778 Jesus did only refer to him as father, however Jesus himself pushed to reestablish God's true name in biblical texts to the Isrealites, as the pharises and scribes allowed the name to be removed from the scriptures as it was "to holy to be spoken by man", by the time Jesus came around the name was almost completely erased, in fact we'd may be unaware of YHWH if it wasn't for Christ himself advocating for it.
