The rings could have gotten washed out from over fueling. Map sensor reading at 12 psi would add a ton of fuel. That will skew compression readings. And most modern engines consume a lot of oil. The cylinder looks like fuel washed away a lot of carbon. I would try to disable the fuel pump and see if it fires off with some starting fluid

A friend of mine had the timing chain completely destroy itself in that engine. Food for thought

If you have a leak down tester, it's a pretty quick test to just shoot a little error in there and see what happens for sure.

Perform a wet compression test to determine if it's worn or damaged piston rings, leaking valves or a leaking cylinder head gasket which may be causing the loss of engine compression. If you had an air compressor then a cylinder leakdown tester would be the way to go !

A starter current test is another quick way to get a gross check for bad cylinders.

All low compression from the sound of it. Either fuel washed or timing broke

There are 2 "professions" that are rife with thieves, HVAC and car repair, I wouldn't trust either "profession" to not try to screw people over. It's better for everyone to just assume they're trying to rip you off.

I'm lucky to have a couple of trusted shops that have never tried ripping me off.

After doing a compression test and finding low compression, the next step is a wet compression test. Cylinder walls and rings can get washed down with fuel for various reasons. Get the scan tool and see what it says. Look at not only the codes but the data!

Subaru's are oil burning machines when up in mileage, great cars but they love oil and will up and leave you if they don't get their share.
