I had an intermittent start no start issue on a Ford Escape. Same thing, I would look at the car and it would start. What I did was shake and wiggle the engine wiring harness and grounds until I got a no start. The problem ended up being a lose ground. As for the wrong part from the parts store. What I do now is verify how the part looks on rockauto’s website. If the part I’m picking up doesn’t look like the part in the picture, I don’t pick it up. Rockauto hasn’t failed me yet.

Remember that Walmart TLE's are NOT mechanics and most Autozone employee's are NOT even TLE's, just regular cashiers with very limited training. Even most Autozone store managers have NO experience with actual car repair, beyond swapping a battery and as seen in the video they even get that wrong.
@RussellBooth1977Күн бұрын
The alternator was likely howling because when the jumper leads were connected in the reverse direction that would've shorted the diode pack out permanently. If someof the modules are offline then check the fuses to make sure that they're not blows because they have reverse polarity diodes on them which will cause a fuse to blow in the event that the battery or jumper leads have been connected in the reverse direction !

Loving your videos brother! I have a question. How does one become a mobile mechanic? I have thought about it for the last few years and I've always had a big interest in vehicle repairs, mechanics, ECT. But not sure where to start if I wanted to get into this on my own working for myself on the side.
@bigg44542 күн бұрын
Ahhh, I see that Dodge Journey you're working on has an alternator with one o' them OAP* (Overrunning Alternator Pulley) or "decoupler pulleys on it. I worked on a VW that had one and just changed the pulley and saved the customer a few bucks as the alternator was still good. Don't see 'em much tho'. * Allows the alternator to free wheel when the drive belt speed is suddenly decreased. Why would "they" find that necessary? Hell if I know🤨.

Once in my life I saw a battery with incorrect polarity out of the factory (internal manufacturing defect). From that point on, I put a meter on every battery before installing.
@simonilett9982 күн бұрын
The whine you heard is a classic sign the internal diodes were fried, it called AC whine. It also allows voltage to drain straight from the battery to ground and drains the battery real quick and it'll be sending AC current to the battery instead of DC. If you connect a volt meter to the battery set to AC volts when you hear an alternator whine like that, you will be able to read how much AC volts are going to the battery. Also the alternator will get hot if the engine is running or not when the diodes go bad.

Asbestos was only banned for a couple of years in the late 70s but then was over turned by a judge. Asbestos mostly used in high heat applications such as certain roofing materials. It’s still used in semi truck brakes because not only does it resist heat, it’s a long lasting material. I’m not sure if it’s still used in passenger vehicles though.

So, I almost blew up a battery once. After a softball game, my wife's car wouldn't start (she drained the battery by leaving her lights on or something). I had my car, so I went to jump it. It was dark in my defense, and her Toyota OEM battery was either put in opposite of mine or the terminals were reversed, I can't remember which. Anyways, as I hopped in my car and started it up, all was well until I heard my wife say, "Is there supposed to be smoke coming out?" I popped my head out and could smell something burning, so I quickly killed the engine and hurried to unplug the cables. Thankfully I had my gloves on because the cable actually melted when I touched it due to it being so hot. I noticed that her battery was also slightly bulged; nothing major, but still noticeable. She also had small electrical issues afterwards (no surprise). I'm just glad I didn't blow the thing up, and I learned my lesson to ALWAYS double check the polarity. Always.

Yup, one can fry BOTH vehicles during a jump start 😢 Luckily, the jump packs with the lithium ion batteries have an integrated circuit protection and it will warn you / not power up if you hook up the clamps backwards

All low compression from the sound of it. Either fuel washed or timing broke
@scottnemec5 күн бұрын
The rings could have gotten washed out from over fueling. Map sensor reading at 12 psi would add a ton of fuel. That will skew compression readings. And most modern engines consume a lot of oil. The cylinder looks like fuel washed away a lot of carbon. I would try to disable the fuel pump and see if it fires off with some starting fluid
@RussellBooth19775 күн бұрын
Perform a wet compression test to determine if it's worn or damaged piston rings, leaking valves or a leaking cylinder head gasket which may be causing the loss of engine compression. If you had an air compressor then a cylinder leakdown tester would be the way to go !

It could have been the transmission, not the engine, right? I knew a '90 Corolla that went through 2 auto transmissions. The first time it seized and locked the wheels on the highway, making it hard to tow. Second time it broke more gradually.
