Actually I am scared stiff whenever I think about alligators or crocodilians. More so than of sharks or any other water dwelling species. I try and get educated about them and I have learned alot, but I am still terrified of meeting one in the wild. Good thing they don't live where I live 😅

Dogs are very different. They have been domesticated and have the ability to learn. Biting is an unwanted behavior that has been trained out of dogs, those that allow or encourage it reverse that training and create bad animals (or work animals) a pet that bites, is not a good animal and are usually euthanized, I don't know your circumstance maybe it was bad timing or something, so it was an accident. Which of course should be considered. I am glad you got back to it though. However, warm blooded animals cannot be compared to cold blooded ones, especially not predators. It just creates a very unreal thought process for ignorant people.
@Edward-Not-Elric
@Edward-Not-Elric Жыл бұрын
@@amandastakeonit7402 No, there is no "reverse" of some sort of genetic training. They are instinctually inclined to bite. YOU have to TRAIN them NOT to bite. Domestication has made them more docile and easier to train, but it is not some sort of genetically learned training. It's a genetic predisposition to socialization and learning. Again, NOT inbedded training. Dogs can and will bite if not trained properly. It's in their nature. Also, alligators and crocodiles can also actually be trained to some degree.
@Ninang363
@Ninang363 Жыл бұрын
@@amandastakeonit7402 Still, the animal must be understood in the situation. The animal can only respond as the animal can. We, as humans in assumed "Control" of the case need to account for that. Also, dogs seem to get imprinted with the emotions/reactions its owners. The pack leader influences the pack after all.
@Exquailibur
@Exquailibur Жыл бұрын
@@amandastakeonit7402 Kennels can be stressful environments, its possible it was stressed and/or injured which can cause animals to lash out when they wouldn't normally. And its not a difference between cold blooded and warm blooded animals but a difference between domesticated and non domesticated and whether they are socialized. Alligators are of comparable intelligence to most mammals so they can definitely learn and I wouldn't blame any wild animal for doing what they do. Even with dogs it depends on their job and background, if its intended to be a family dog it needs to be very tolerant but if is a poorly socialized animal and needs work than it may need a second chance if the bite wasn't serious. Animal behavior is highly variable and circumstances matter a lot, for example there is a difference between a bull elephant who charges someone and an elephant that actively has a grudge against people or an alligator that bites one person and an alligator that actively seeks out people in the wild.

Alligators have been my favorite animal for so many years now (even going back to high school and loving the gharial so much) and I've always wanted the opportunity to work with them like this. I loved being able to educate people or show my knowledge of these animals any time I went to Florida for vacation because they don't deserve the hatred and animosity that people give them. I feel the most amazing thing about her and her bravery is that she had prepared for this! She had been aware of the risks and planned for the worst case scenarios so that when it happened she reacted as she'd visualized before- it's so important to have done this, so that she didn't blank out and panic. She was probably scared of course, but when we're terrified but we had a plan the brain kicks in on the plan because it can't THINK sometimes during that. it goes right to whatever you practiced or planned, the steps you know to take. She was READY so when there was an accident, she acted, and was able to survive! Luck, great friends, and preparation! It makes me think what plans do I have for possible risks in my life and what I mean to do if they come up. (Also I saw Darth Gator just yesterday and he is looking fine and dandy!)

While I mostly agree, there is always a degree of unpredictability with animals. We can learn a lot about them and get a good sense of what their typical behavior is and why, but we should be wary of absolute statements. It's important to maintain caution with animals, and not assume you know exactly what they will do, even when you are experienced with them. Just as a personal example, I bottle raised a sheep and I was basically her mom. Spent two years with her before she suddenly started headbutting me with no provocation. I had made no change to how I was interacting with her, and the other bottle lamb raised with her never started doing it either. I've since learned to recognize when she's thinking about it, but from my perspective it was a sudden personality shift. Whether there is a scientific explanation or not, I just wasn't able to predict that she would do that, even though I knew this animal since she was a newborn.

yeah this, i have the disagreeable honour of falling off every horse I have ever been placed on top off. I have never had riding lessons per say, more the guided experience stuff but I have done it like 10 times now and its 100% a me problem at this point. The only one that wasnt really my fault was when i was a little kid, something spooked the horse and i guess the handler didn't either get on it quick enough or was simply unable to stop this freaked out bolt machine that weighed more than she did but I did get moderately trampled on I guess it set a bad precedent or something. Not once have I ever blamed the horse. My parents didnt even blame the horse.

We had 2 paint horses when I grew up… (They were REALLY my older SISTER’S horses!) The second horse, Ramjet, was a young & wild horse that I was forced to ride so she wouldn’t be alone. Her horse, Raingo, was a huge A$$ & would bite my horse on the butt so I would be bucked off!! I was TERRIFIED of those horses, & boy did they KNOW IT!!! They would see me from across the field & literally CHARGE at me as I ran to the barn for safety!!! One time they knocked me down & literally trampled me!! I crawled to the barn & layed there for a couple of hours before my sister came looking for me, & carried me to the house so my dad could take me to the ER. I ended up with a broken collarbone & TONS of stitches in my leg in the shape of nearly an entire horseshoe! (I still have a huge scar!!) My entire body was bruised, & the hospital thought my dad had beaten me!! (He didn’t!!)🙂

Glad everyone is ok. We just watched your two videos and are happy that Darth received a enclosure upgrade and also happy her injures healed well. One thing I noticed when watching the video... Would it had been a benefit if the staff had worn grip shoes and the bottom of the gator pool had had a rough grippy textured surface so that she may have been able to get traction to stand or maneuver the gator better? Maybe something they would consider for future possible issues. Great interviews, thanks.

Thank you for that update, Clint and Lindsay! So glad everyone came out of that fairly unscathed. I loved how she worked with Darth and that you could see that he knew the commands but was still trying to push to see how far he could go. I'm glad that after only 2 minutes, he let go of her hand a year ago. I'm pretty sure a wild alligator would never have let her go. He reacted to the feeling by his mouth. It was feeding time and she usually fed him. Thank heaven that man jumped in and helped hold Darth's body so he was unable to continue to think her hand was food. Great ending for all!

One thing I noticed re-watching is their new staff policy! Not just the stick (I know ppl were asking about one on the past video). But, also the staff is keeping Darth in line of sight at all times... Tho it now occurs to me, I've no idea how help could possibly reach a keeper further in from the entrance? For the channel, (I'll ask somewhere more recent too): is there any reason why reptiles in particular seem to have a strong feeding response, and separately why in the world do Rex and Darth still have baby stripes? (For the comments I know will come) obv the other staff can just run in the enclosure if there's a situation, but further away is not where you want help for your alligator bite.

She remained so calm, cool and collected it's mind blowing😮. No screaming. No crying. No hysterical behavior at all! She just slowly climbed into the enclosure and began using her training she had when it came to, "what to do if you're being bitten and eaten by an alligator! 😢 This video should be given to anyone planning on working with crocodillion's..This is a perfect example of how to handle this situation properly! That was a small one. She already talked about how lucky she was. She literally has her hand and all her fingers which is unbelievable. A gator is gonna gator. And all the gator cared about for a couple minutes was getting that food off her arm. Well I hope they both have a long happy life. And that's one hell of a story to tell. Not many people who have had a gator chomp down on their hand get to keep it. Her reaction to jump in the cage was brilliant and completely counterintuitive to what one's instinct must be telling them, which is to pull away.

We’d all like to think we are prepared for the worst, or bad things and that it wouldn’t change our passion for working with these animals, but it is often much easier said than done! Also the same intelligence that makes training them rewarding is the same that makes it tough lol. Anticipating the process and expectations to get to the reward stage is such a habit of smarter animals lol.

I’m really glad Garth is alive but that “New Larger Enclosure “ is tiny ! To think if this bite hadn’t happened he’d have been in an “Even “ smaller pond ! I really hope he has access to more space somewhere? He’s performing in a tiny indoor pool….he’s not a toy, let him go to an outdoor facility now please. 😢 Put the gator 1st don’t keep them if you can’t provide an enriched and appropriate environment. Don’t have him live like this to perform at kids parties 🙏

Well the fools bought a baby gator in the middle of Colorado, do they even have an outdoor facility they could put a pond in? And what about heating it in winter? The fact is, they made many bad decisions with this animal. Don’t buy gators unless you can house them properly as adults.

Chris Gilette often mentions that the under chin hold looks stable, but it can easily go wrong. To me, it looked like she let her arm go a little too far into the enclosure, like she should have pulled back sooner. Or with the enclosure being raised like that it makes it harder to follow the gator to keep the right pressure. It was just a Murphy's Law kind of situation. I'm glad both Lindsay and Darth made it through okay. Props esp to the doc who worked on her hand, I expected there to be a lot more limitation in her range of motion.

He's remarkably patient and gentle. The accident was unfortunate for all involved I'm sure he didn't like it very much either. You can't see something like this I'm done calling alligator stupid and only instinctual. There's some serious learning and communication involved here. I some more than simply operant conditioning going on. His actions were deliberate and definitely chosen because of the noticeably slight variations each time he went through with one of the commands. None of it is autopilot though the accident certainly was. Absolutely amazing.

I am so glad that you did an update. Lindsay is still so amazing!! It is still very hard to watch the video clips of the incident. Makes me cry every time, even though I know the outcome. I love crocodilians and do not blame them at all. I agree with what Lindsay said, (goes for sharks too) you can't blame the gator, it's doing just as you would expect it to. It does what it's engrained to do, you can't undo 80 million years of evolution, that has told these animals how to get it right. We can influence individuals and maybe even breed them down to more gentle, easier to work with creatures, but we cannot in decades and even centuries undo 80 million years! She's a real champ, those that aidded in her rescue are champs too! I am super glad that Scales and Tails didn't shut down or get rid of Darth Gator or Lindsay! I hope those kids are okay and they have came back. I am also glad that Lindsay mentioned his jaw, because I was wondering about it. Do they have UVB lights on him at all? Surely they can get some that they can raise and lower as needed. It isn't able to be fixed but it can be prevented from getting worse. Whole animal diets are important too.

I still see problems with how they were handling that gator at that facility. Look at their KZbin page, you can see her kissing the gator on the face and training him in what is essentially a fish bowl. Getting trapped into corners so operant conditioning training can’t be performed properly. The enclosure is too small as well. I’m disappointed in how this trainer and company got so much support and positive press from big reptile channels like this - when it comes to deadly reptiles, they MUST be cared for and handled as carefully as possible. And this ain’t it.
