I never flip a breaker without pulling the disconnect! That way I am sitting next to the unit when it starts and if need be I can pull the disconnect immediately if I hear or see anything funny.

Should have checked compressor to ground before turning on

I agree but would that have changed the outcome? If I had checked to see if the compressor was shorted to ground would it have saved this unit in your opinion? If so how?

Nice job...I just did a change out on a 2 ton ICP Heat Pump / Air Handler and did all the steps, cracked open the valves to let loose (R-410A) and there was NO pre charge of freon in the system, I checked the unit for leaks (visual and sound) no leak, I weighed in the factory charge after doing another vacuum and so far the unit is running fine, I haven't seen that in 20 yrs of doing AC work, I called the company where I purchased the system and they said to monitor the system and if I have any issues let them know and they would pay me a freon allowance, they said it should have come recharged.

@@Legitheatingandair "Eye" agree. (chuckle). I have learned the hard way to check for shorted wires in the compressor first when the breaker has flipped. My reason is to show customer immediately that their AC unit is bad before I go any further. This keeps those slip&fall customers from putting in a false claim on us. Keep sowing good so that U will harvest good! I know who to call when I need ac work.

As a landscaper I'm glad I never weed wack next to those. Customers used to say you didn't do a good job around there. I told them the wires hanging out of those things are there for a reason. Was i right ✅️ 😂

You have proven through your work so far that you are a good and honest HVAC tech, but... You wash the old pipes while they are directed towards the pipes of the new unit, the cover should not serve as protection during soldering and finally, under the new unit you can see the remains of old oil which obviously you didn't clean before installing. I'm writing this as a well-intentioned critique, keep up the good work

I was grounded. Always check for a grounded compressor when you find a tripped breaker before resetting. Also check holding nitrogen pressure test for at least 15 minuets to make sure there are no leaks at the indoor unit. That compressor fried for a reason.

No hate but i always wondered why the diagrams on the back of the panels were burnt. Im sure maybe it wasn't a important part but still. It seems like the one part you need is always burnt or smeared. Also unrelated to that i love soldering\brazing A/c lines. If i could just do that all day every day id die happy. I really enjoy it but of course that doesn't include the swedging and cleaning copper. That part isn't fun depending how much room or line you have to work with and also sometimes feels like 90% of the work is just sanding copper until my hand starts to cramp up

I think most techs would flip on the breaker not check and see if the compressor is short to ground. I have had to many techs working for me they would have done what you did and charge the customer for a new unit. You just let the Freon out the fast way. No the compressor was short to ground and even if you checked it with your meter you would have found a bad compressor. The customer should pay for this it's not a mistake. It looks like you blew it up. If the heat pump was not working my dispatcher would ask the homeowner to check the breaker and when they cut it on ? Who pays. I hope you did not do that job for free.
