Lol the amount of television editing on this is crazy. Cobalt was high centered, not dead. Cobalt’s weapon was fully stopped, however a piece of shrapnel from whiplash was blocking their weapon on/off switch. Their drive switch, when off, also turned off the weapon, but terry and the producers weren’t confident in that, so they then decided to take it to the judges. The judges actually went into the box to inspect the bots before they made their decision.

From Team Whiplash: Wow, so much to unpack with our fight recap against Cobalt last night. Let’s start with: “Cobalt went on the offensive early and was able to land a series of shots that spelled trouble for Whiplash”. All we’ll say for now is to check out the “full” fight on the BattleBots KZbin channel this Sunday to see what was not shown as part of our fight highlights. At the end of the fight Chris asks Kenny, “Are they gonna try and unstick these two or what?" And Kenny responds “Well that’s what I would expect to see so early in a match, but Cobalt’s weapon is still spinning.” Although Cobalt’s radio switch was stuck on, Cobalt had spun their weapon down to a full stop which was edited out of both the fight recap and the “full” fight on KZbin. BattleBots crew still felt that the situation was too unsafe to give us the unstick, and ultimately Cobalt’s batteries were pulled to ensure that there was no power to the bot, and it was removed from the arena. Tournament Rules state that it is at BattleBots discretion whether they want to restart a fight depending on time constraints. Unsticks are also at their discretion if they feel that it would be unsafe to do so. Both are reasonable, so long as the rule enforcement is equal, fair, and consistent with all teams. This was just a really weird fight that we think should have been handled differently. We have no issues with the Cobalt team or the judges. We don’t want fans to revolt against BattleBots lol, we just feel that we owe it to our fans and our sponsors to get the full unedited story. So even with the typical unaired fights in the qualifiers, there was an entire episode worth of content missing from this season. Having unaired fights in the post season is unacceptable. They need to either cut down on the storyline stuff so there's enough time for all post season fights, or make 2 shorter episodes to allow 4 fights per night instead of 7.

Just copying/pasting what Team Carbide / Robotic Death Company has said about the fight: Matt pushed Whiplash into the corner, knowing that Whiplash was crabwalking enought to not be counted out. Once Whiplash had been shoved against the side of the shelf, Matt spun Cobalt back around. When Cobalt spun the right side gyroed upwards, and when it dropped we were high center on either some shrapnel or the floor. A moment after Whiplash twitched into the shelf then stopped moving. At that moment no one was sure what was going on other than Whiplash was not moving and neither was Cobalt. They then paused the fight. Trey went out to see what had actually happened to the robots and see if an unstick was needed. We shut Cobalt’s spinner off before Trey entered. Trey determined that there was probably an unstick needed but insisted on turning off the bots, something that had never happened before in previous unstick or even possible unsticks that had happened previously in the season. When attempting to shut off Cobalt (personal edit: mechanically, they already spun down the weapon), Trey could not shut off the weapon as there was some debris blocking the switch. What we had told Trey which was not heeded, was that our weapon and drive switch are linked, so the drive switch could’ve been shut off which would have powered down the whole bot. At no point was our spinner stuck on. Trey decided to simply count the whole thing as a double KO, and did the KO as seen filmed. (personal edit: team Whiplash also noted that they eventually removed the batteries from Cobalt) The judges then did something I had never seen before this season, and actually entered the box to inspect the bots. The decision was then rendered as a split decision for Cobalt. At no time did we not have control over Cobalt’s weapon. Forcing a shut off before an unstick had never happened before that season. Despite clear communication on how to shut off Cobalt it was not done. Also Battlebots had control over the fight being highlighted and highlighted it for a reason, which will make itself apparent in time.

But you can also argue that by taking no damage themselves (as team cobalt is claiming its a piece of whiplash that disabled them), and being unable to spin down their weapon (it didnt fail safe) then Cobalt should have been disqualified for violation of safety rules per 7.9.2 and 7.10 of the BB tournament rules

@@damsaucy The way this has been edited together claims that Cobalt was unable to spin the weapon down, creating a safety issue which prevented the robots being unstuck for the fights to continue. Both teams have reported, however, that this is totally untrue - the weapon spun down without issue and the robots were in a state where in the past the crew have deemed an unstick to be viable and safe.

The floor has only recently been fixed, and the wider killsaw slots are an awesome addition this year. The ground game meta is honestly more interesting as a tradeoff. The lower you go, the more likely you are to catch the floor. OR make like Witch Doctor or Minotaur and run NO ground game to guarantee you good mobility and fight with your weaponry. A floor with catch risks makes the ground game a less linear and more interesting meta to be played.

Keep an eye out at the 2:34 mark on the clock in the arena, you can see shrapnel fly and land in the exact spot where Cobalt ultimately got high centered. If that was the case, Section 7.5.12 of the Tournament Rules would define Cobalt as being incapacitated. Whiplash was just stuck and we requested an unstick. If anybody sees any visible damage to the arena floor prior to the debris falling feel free to let us know. From our perspective it seems pretty clear that it was debris.

Just randomly moving the Robot is not sufficient. A Robot that can only rotate in place due to partial failure of the drive mechanism is also considered to be non-Responsive" This was before Cobalt got jammed up on that debris. So unfortunately Whiplash was already only ever going to get through on a technicality (i.e if they had failed to count Whiplash out fast enough before Cobalt was evidently "incapacitated". Would that feel like a real win?

OK, I understand that they go straight to the decision because it was unsafe to unstick cobalt with their weapon spinning. But Matt Vasquez shared that cobalt did power down but they are unable to risk it since the LED that shows the weapon is activated is still on. So hear me out. Unstick whiplash first. It's easy and safe cause they can work from the upper deck then exit the box and have whiplash unstick cobalt. Then they can continue the match where they left off. Boom problem solved. Team whiplash deserves better than a loss like this and to have its tournament matches 100% unaired. Justice for whiplash.

I mean tantrum was my favorite bot because of the unique way it strikes and is able to save its weapon from potential damage, but the final should've been two completely different bots. I was watching the NHRL (basically, one of the very popular leagues for bots at lower-weight classes). And the rule there allows any bots who are stuck or high-centred to get help unsticking themselves once per match. Should Battlebot implement this rule?

Maybe the clowns off camera will get their stuff together next season, and just stop cutting fights from the broadcast. The show is called "Battlebots" not "rambling filler". A 2 hour broadcast should be able to fit 8 3(maximum) minute fights. Also get rid of that deck, it makes things claustrophobic and doesn't really do anything but take up space.

I think I would have scored the battle for Whiplash. Not because I'm a great fan (I always liked the English team, especially a previous incarnation called Carbide), but let's assume they would have reset the game. Cobolt is an English bot, which has had reliability problems before. So I assume there was a real defect there that prevented it from moving. It would have been counted out shortly after the game resumed. I also assume that Whiplash was merely stuck, but still functioned - albeit "crab walking". Therefore, the damage to Cobolt was not only more extensive, it would have resulted in a KO. So, Whiplash is my winner.

if its all custom drives/machining/tooling/materials then not really. Most robots use off the shelf parts and design the bots in CAD, but it seems to me this weapon is purely a prototype design with all custom parts.

Gotta call bs on that weapon costing supposedly "$55,000.00". This isn't Nascar or the NFL or MLB. There aren't thousands of fans in the seats ringside. There's NO way a plumber is going to have an extra $55,000.00 laying around to play with. I doubt that weapon even costed $5,500.00. Where's the receipt for that weapon? I think we deserve to see it since they want to make the claim on TV.

Cobalts weapon is made from a cobalt chromium alloy that comes out to a strength more than twice that of ar500, the usual material of choice for spinners.

@@epiphonium Both teams seem to agree that Cobalt spun down without issue, and was in the same state as any other robot is in when approached by teams/crew for an unstick or for deactivation.

@@epiphonium It takes about 30 sec or so for the weapon to stop spinning. The comment in the video saying its still spinning may have been made in that 30 sec. The next quote saying its still active was probably made later, with the weapon stopped but the weapon switch not accessible. There are other ways to ensure the weapon is not able to spin, they just chose not to do that and restart the fight. Given whiplash was stuffed i can see why (though i still think they should have restarted).
