I recently went back on vitex. I noticed my cycle changed significantly. It went from 3 days of medium to light flows to so far a very heavy flow. Am not worried because it is a nice, bright red but the intensity did surprise me. Will stay the course for at least 3 months.

I started taking vitex and maca in September. I've had one period since. My periods are normally EXTREMELY heavy, long, and painful. The last period was very light in comparison to normal. I almost didn't even know it was my period, but instead thought it was heavy spotting at first. It has made my cycles longer. The last one was 40 days, and its looking like this one will be too (CD 36 now). They were usually 30-33 days before starting vitex and maca.

I started using Vitex to STOP spotting... for the last 2 years I’ve had consistent spotting in my cycle with no provider able to tell me what’s wrong. Everything checks out healthy. It’s been about 3 weeks and I’ve had some jaw acne so I dialed back my dosage to 400mg/2 times a week, rather than 400mg every day.

I actually googled nearly this exact video title. After taking vitex consistently for about 5 or more months I noticed that my period seemed shorter and lighter. It did kind of freak me out. At the same time I read that if one has breast cancer they should not take vitex and I was a little concerned about my breast health. It’s been maybe 2 mos not taking it and last cycle seemed heavier which may be my cycle returning or something else. It was also a bit early and I’m normally super regular. Definitely open to any feedback anyone might have.
@hethir5 жыл бұрын
What we know is that a period that is 3-5 days with medium flow is considered "normal". What exactly is "medium" may differ from woman to woman really. It does seem like the change you've seen in your period is a result of hormones shifting after stopping Vitex, but I can't know for sure. I have not read of Vitex use with breast cancer, and do not know it to be harmful to breasts/breast tissue. In fact it has been proven to be helpful for PMS related breast pain and lactation when taken in small doses. I also know that the Botanical Safety Handbook has categorized Vitex as a class 1 herb. Class 1 herbs are herbs that can be safely consumed when used appropriately.

Menstrual cycle shifts are very common with Vitex. A cycle shift can include a period coming later than expected. Stick with it. It means the body is responding to the herb and beginning to balance the hormonal system.

However I had long cycles before and I just want a baby so bad. I don’t know whether to continue, throw some maca in there, or quit it all and give it up.

There could be a few things going on here... 1. When first introducing herbs that have an action on the hormonal system, like Vitex, some women may experience mid-cycle spotting. Many herbs we use to support reproductive health, have an action on the hormonal system, which is why they are so effective at aiding the body in correcting hormonal imbalances. The change to hormone signaling due to the introduction of herbs, may cause temporary mid-cycle spotting. This should only occur for the first couple cycles of use; as the body adjusts to the action of the herbs being taken. Though it may be worrisome, it is best to continue the herb/s. Herbs/herbal formulas are most effective when taken consistently for many months. This gives the body time to adjust to the action of the herb/s and for their benefits to be realized. 2. Sexual Intercourse - The cervix becomes more sensitive around the time of ovulation, in preparation for pregnancy. Sexual intercourse may cause some slight damage to the cervix, producing light bleeding as a result. The presence of bright red blood tinged mucus after sexual intercourse is a common sign of this. 3. Depending on where you are in your cycle, spotting can be a sign that you have ovulated, but it can also be a sign that you didn’t (particularly when spotting happens mid-cycle). I'm sorry you are worried, but it may be worth trying for another cycle or two to see if things change. You ultimately get to make that choice though.
@hethir5 жыл бұрын
You also had a question about the dosage of Vitex, but when I accepted your comment it disappeared, unfortunately. Vitex is generally suggested at 900 to 1,000 milligrams daily, all month long. Was there another question I missed?

The spotting had stopped! My period was early my first cycle with vitex now I am late by more than a few days. Negative pregnancy test, however none of the symptoms i usually get around AF are present. Usually I have sore breasts, a lot of bloating, emotional rollercoaster, even some nausea and exhaustion. But this cycle has shown none of that yet! At least that might be a good sign. Hard to tell! But I’m going to keep trying with the vitex. We will see when AF decides to show up. Thanks for the replies

Hi. We know that the cycle can shift when some women first begin taking Vitex as well as any other herbs which help the body balance hormones. Shifts in the cycle are actually a sign that the body is responding, using what the herbs are offering, we view this as a great thing. Vitex is not known to cause ovulation to stop, but timing may temporarily shift for some.

@hethir5 жыл бұрын
This is exactly what happens to many women! I am so glad you've seen a positive OPK and can trust Vitex again ;-). If you are going to actively ttc this cycle, it may be best to wait to start Vitex again if you do not conceive. It can then be started with cycle day 1. If you will not be actively ttc, Vitex can be started again at any time. Trust your body is shifting in response to Vitex because it needs to. It will settle into a pattern again.

I turned 41 this month. Using Vitex and more for the last 3 years. Every few cycles I gain a day or 2. Is this reversible or a sign of perimenopause? More pregnancies are not my aim. Optimal health is. Thanks, Danya
@hethir5 жыл бұрын
Hey Dayna! I can't be certain this is perimenopause for you, because cycles naturally shift some as we enter our 40s and can be impacted by diet and hydration, stress, exercise levels, weight gain/loss, even travel. It's also not something that needs to be reversed necessarily if your cycles are otherwise consistent with bright red menstruation, few clots and little to no pain (PMS). That said, it's fine to use Vitex to see how things shift. After around 6 months to a year of consistent use of Vitex, it is suggested to wean off and see how the body maintains balance on its own.

Some women may experience a shift in their cycle when they first begin using Vitex. The length of the menstrual cycle may shorten or lengthen temporarily before it finally stabilizes. This is generally just the body balancing itself out and is completely normal. We see this as a great thing, the body is responding to the herb being used. We find that for some, balance is not achieved until one to three cycles of use.

I do believe it could be because I was taking the wrong dosage of the vitex one pill daily instead of two 500mg then when I started taking two that’s when the heavy bleeding and cramping came.. so confuse should I continue to take the two pills daily or stop taking altogether?

Currently cycle 3 of vitex - I definitely noticed a shift in my body straight away which was great. Taking vitex for scanty periods (about a week of spotting, 2 days of ‘period’ then more spotting - I also have awful breast tenderness after ovulating, constantly until period arrives). I have noticed that spotting before period has become shortened + actual period has become longer since taking vitex - but no way near perfect. In the first month my pms breast tenderness vanished, but sadly came back again this cycle. Do you know why? Also, I am charting, and noticed my ovulation date has been delayed each month. Roughly how long do you think it may take for my cycle to become regular again? I came off the pill 2 years ago (was on it for 15 years) - currently trying for a baby. Could the scanty periods be related to coming off the pill, even though I came off it a while ago and had regular periods until fault recently? I look forward to hearing your thoughts and advice x

@hethir5 жыл бұрын
PMS and breast tenderness can be linked to many things beyond hormonal shifts... diet predominantly so. Sugar, alcohol, caffeine and nutrient deficiencies (even month to month for some women) can cause PMS to be stronger. Stress can play a role as well. Beyond that the hormonal shifts are also cause and the hormone can shift when the body is regulating again. It can take some time for the hormones to balance after stopping birth control, particularly when on it for a very long time. May I know how much Vitex you are taking and your total cycle length, including when ovulation is in your cycle. Have your cycles been consistent in length in these three months. It is great your body is listening and using what Vitex is offering, and it simply may take more time for your cycle to settle into a regular pattern.
@misshanson5 жыл бұрын
Thank you for getting back to me Natural Fertility Info - You’re right about the dietary advice; last year, (whilst still suffering with major breast tenderness - but all month long) I noticed that when I didn’t have caffeine, the aching reduced massively! I will look into sugar and stress too (also suffer with long term anxiety, so trying to reduce stress with mindfulness - helps a lot). I have taking prenatal supplements (5 months before trying to conceive). Almost as soon as we started trying, my cycle started changing - typical. I have been taking 1000mg of vitex a day for 3(ish) cycles (in the form of 2 capsules). Taking prenatals, multi b vits, veggie omega 3. My cycles were usually 28 days (when they were ‘normal’) and I was ovulating pretty much bang on day 14. Then my cycle started changing and varied a few days either way, but spotting was getting longer. Now my Natural Cycles app tells me my cycles are shortest 25 and longest 30. And now each month the app has been confused about when I have ovulated; expecting me to ovulate day 14-15. This month I had an positive LH surge day 13, but then only had a temp shift 18 dpo with negative LH surge before. Quite confusing. Did I ovulate? It’s hard to say if the past 3 cycles have been consistent, as I haven’t had three whole cycles on vitex, as such; I started taking halfway through my period/spotting in July. Now I’ve just ovulated- apparently (no breast tenderness at all, like I used to) so will be 3 full cycles in a few weeks when/if my period comes. So sorry, I hope this makes sense :) Difficult to make sense of it myself ha! Thankful for your support and absolutely love your KZbin videos - I learn so much and they keep me going x

Ps- I have to say, I only took 1 opk test the day before the temp rise, and it was negative. I didn’t do any other opk tests after the positive one.

Hi again! Thank you for trusting us with more of your story. It truly seems consistent continued use of Vitex is perhaps best, along with continued work on diet and lifestyle. Liver health to help the body properly metabolize excess estrogen is worth focusing on as well... milk thistle seed, liver-supporting foods, DIM. Do also be sure to include pre- and probiotic foods in your diet. That you just ovulated with no breast tenderness is great! A confused app may be because things are shifting, which is the goal with hormonal balance and taking Vitex. If there was a BBT dip and then rise, or sustained rise, before that temp shift on day 18, then ovulation may have happened. If there was a BBT dip and then rise on the 18th day, then that could have been ovulation. I hope I'm not making that more confusing. I think continued consistency and following the program for a bit longer, while tracking your cycles is best.

I tried one brand of vitex for about 3/4 months which is 1200 mg and it did good for my symptoms and period. I took a couple month break from that and it went back to regular like before vitex experience. Now I started a different brand with lower mg for 2 cycles and second cycle is weird because I spotted a little before the period and on period day only had bleeding for that day and stopped completely the next. What should I do? My problem is I have 7 day periods and spot a lot and symptoms are too much and acne.
@hethir3 жыл бұрын
Perhaps more time was needed with the vitex? It can safely be used for up to eighteen months before a break is needed. We have a menstrual health guide which covers information on longer periods and spotting here: natural-fertility-info.com/natural-menstrual-health.html

Although there is no standardized Milk Thistle dosage at this time, most people do best consuming between 20-300 milligrams daily. You would just follow the general suggested dose that is printed on the label of the product you choose. Hi I’ve been taking vitex for 2 months in two weeks it will be 3 months. I started using it because I missed a period and I wanted to regulate my cycle. I also took vitex to conceive. First month my period was back and very heavy. Second cycle it was regular and light. I have now missed a period. I am 8 days late and I have been getting negatives on pregnancy test. Should I keep taking vitex or stop?

You might be experiencing shifts in your cycle, this can happen when beginning an herb such as Vitex. You may want longer time with this herb as the body adjusts. We find that for some, balance is not achieved until one to three cycles of use.

Been taking vitex for about 4-5 months now. I stopped nursing my 2 year old last March and have not stimulated my breasts in any other way. My past two cycles, my milk supply has surged after ovulation to the point it is extremely uncomfortable. Wondering if this is correlated to the Vitex? If so, should I continue to see if it evens out my hormones and my milk supply to leave or should I stop using it? This same thing happened when I took Vitex a cycle or two before I got pregnant with my daughter. I eat a gluten free, healthy diet.

Vitex in low doses has been found to stimulate breastmilk production, but at the general suggested dose of 900-1000mg is known to decrease high prolactin levels. I am curious how much Vitex you've taken in each dose and for how long now.
@hadleybloom77315 жыл бұрын
Natural Fertility Info I have been taking one, organic 440 mg capsule per day for the last 4 months.

It may be a low enough dose for you to increase prolactin rather than decrease it. It may be worth considering two capsule to be nearer the general suggested use to see how things change.

Menstrual cycle shifts are often common when starting Vitex, unless you happen to be pregnant or made any other changes. If you want to experience the full benefits of this herb, it is best to use it consistently without a break for three months or longer. We find that for some, balance is not achieved until one to three cycles of use.

@hethir5 жыл бұрын
Vitex should be taken long term to receive optimal results. A general rule is a consistent three month minimum, but many women choose to continue it longer. It can be used safely for up to eighteen months before a break is needed. Vitex has been used for over 2,000 years with no significant side-effects reported. Some minor and infrequent side-effects (1-2% of users may experience some) have been nausea, gastrointestinal upset, skin reactions, and headache. Women with a history of depression taking Vitex for menstrual irregularity may experience an exacerbation of depressive symptoms. Even though it has been shown to have no interference with oral contraceptives (birth control), due to limited research, Vitex should not be used in conjunction with prescription medications that contain hormones in case it may interfere with their activity. Some women do experience a shift in their cycle when they first begin using Vitex. The length of the menstrual cycle may shorten or lengthen temporarily before it finally stabilizes. This is just the body balancing itself out and is completely normal.
