Flipping the differential will work fine. Gears get "splash" lubricated from the ring gear slinging oil, like in a manual transmission. Your solution for inlet and outlet may come back to bite you. Oil will loosen your silicone plug. A more permanent solution would be to tap the hole for pipe thread and install a pipe plug. The lower 48 refers to the continental US.

Since I heard a reference to the 49th parallel slip into that conversation, I think they know that and are just having a little fun with it. Much of the border between Canada and the lower 48 follows the 49th parallel.

OK, Matt, you got me. :) I'll take the bait. Two terms that are roughly synonymous: "Lower 48" and "CONUS" Lower 48 refers to the 48 states of the USA excluding Alaska and Hawaii. CONUS or Continental US refers to the 48 states of the USA excluding Alaska, Hawaii, and also excluding various territories like Puerto Rico. I'm not going to go into the various usages nor history behind the terms, but perhaps the most common usage is in the context of shipping cost. You will often see statements like, "Free shipping to the Lower 48," or a price breakdown that lists one cost for the Lower 48 and another higher cost for other locations. That's because a typical item can be shipped by ground to any of the Lower 48 or Continental US, and ground shipping is usually cheapest. Shipping outside of the Lower 48 or CONUS is going to involve other more expensive shipping methods such as air or sea, or via other countries (you have to leave the USA and go through Canada to drive from Washington State to Alaska). Great videos! Thanks for all you do!

@@DerUnbbekante probably not. Just like under normal driving conditions having a front sump pan in the TrailBlazer SS isn't an issue. The comment about brakes freezing up on the Alaska highway is a very real thing. I live in Manitoba, Canada and semi-regularly assist people who have locked up in this way. It seems to happen most commonly to people driving in whiteout conditions and using the brakes a lot. When they stop the blowing snow touches the brakes, melts, and refreezes. The easiest way to deal with that is torque. Your bombi shouldn't have a problem because it only has brakes on the power axel. The biggest problem is the 2wd systems where they can break their drives free but the other wheels are locked up and the ice on the ground doesn't provide enough traction to break the other wheels free.

Ok… I’ve been holding off with this info, but with Matt’s request for sparks out the back it kinda seals it for me. This is bound to be in the comments somewhere, but here goes… There’s an insect called the Bombadier Beetle. It has the ability to mix two separate chemicals it produces in its body. When threatened, the beetle can aim its tailpipe, and shoots tiny sparks at the imposing opponent.

I was waiting for Tom to give us a physics lecture on aliasing to explain why the fan appears to rotate in the opposite direction in the video. Maybe next time. Good explanation Matt on the use of "engine" and "motor" terms. It really doesn't matter and in addition, there are likely regional differences in the use of the term, just like "driveshaft" and "driveline". Some parts of the country (or world) use one term and another region uses another term. Always enjoy your videos, but Sundays are the best!

Same thing applies in New England. I NEVER set my parking brake in sub freezing temperatures. I only use my parking brake enough in the winter to keep all the moving parts free. I WILL engage it when necessary or appropriate but never over night. MANY years ago my brother set his parking brake in the winter and froze his car in place directly in front of the garage door. He and my dad spent a LOT of time under the car in the cold freeing everything up so the car would move. My dad was NOT happy.

Hadn't heard that particular definition of 'lower 48' before... seems suspect... In other news: the Bomb Bee 🐝 is coming together nicely. Use ARP studs or bolts for the exhaust manifold and you won't have to deal with broken off bolts again. Older LS engines came with a longer oil filter and newer ones a shorter filter. Be sure to use the longer Napa Platinum 41522 filter.

Just a suggestion; think about putting the exhaust and the waste heat (radiator) above the engine and pointing straight up. An electric fan pushing air upward through the radiator should keep the engine nicely cool and happy. You might also remember that heat rises naturally.

You can get more clearance for the engine with a Corvette style accessory drive. I also wonder if you've looked into a Torsen differential. Supposedly when the brakes are applied on one side, a Torsen unit multiplies torque on the other side something like 5x.

Drive sprockets are raised on tracked machines so that they don't see shock loading from rolling on the ground. Front sprockets/idlers are often raised to provide an angle of attack. This aids in climbing over things and compressing the snow/mud/soft terrain underneath.

It's too bad his explanation was incorrect. This is what it really means/came from. The term "lower 48" used when Hawaii is actually the southernmost state? Alaska was the 49th state. When Alaska became a state, there was "Alaska", and then "The lower 48". Hawaii wasn't a state at that time.

OK Mat, it's time to straighten you out on the lower 48. I lived in Alaska starting in 1950. When Alaska officially became the 49th state in 1959 and before Hawaii became the 50th state the Continental 48 states became "The lower 48" That is a fact. Any time we traveled south we were going to the lower 48.

I'm looking forward to seeing the revamped Bombi in action this winter. As to "lower forty-eight," I may have missed some discussion, but it used to refer to the forty-eight states before Alaska was admitted in 1959. I like Matt's explanation. I may just get ambitious and count the countries in the southern hemisphere some time. Probably not today.
