Mat, the force on the rear wheel is actually supporting double the force required to move the Bombi because the forces from the top and bottom side of the track are equal, only the force on the bottom contributes towards moving the Bombie, and the wheel is supporting the forces of both the bottom and the top side of the track. If you were moving in reverse the top track would be slack and the wheel would only be supporting the force on the slack side. This is why bulldozers drive sprockets are on the rear.

I'm an engineer, hate to tell you since this involves major rebuilding, but the problem is front sprocket drive puts tremendous stress on the whole track, axles, and chassis. Rear sprocket drive reduces the stress on both front and rear axles. Front sprocket drive means the tracks are not tensioned when they try to climb over obstacles, making it harder for them to float over rocks and ledges, again, more stress on the front axles. Military tanks can have massive axles and tracks, so some use front drive sprockets, but the Bombi isn't a 60 ton Abrams X.
@NBSV16 ай бұрын
I agree. The drive on the Bombi worked fine when it was basically just itself in snow with less power. As designed there’s much less load on the parts since it’s just driving around. With what they’re doing it’s much more load along with more power and more traction. Going to take some trial and error to hopefully get it reliable. I would think the drivetrain can be reinforced enough to work. Rebuilding this to be rear drive would be something. At that point I’d almost be wondering if a FWD drivetrain mounted in the rear would work.
@andersolsson67096 ай бұрын
While I agree with you on the principle, the real problem here I believe is having brakes on both the powered front axle with drive sprockets and the rear axle.
@johndc74464 ай бұрын
I think it all boils down to trade offs. I don't know what are those but front drive sprockets might have some pros that outweighs the cons on this type of job.

One of the things we learned in fielding newly modified equipment is that the forces that caused the modification do not eliminate those forces but simply transfer the effects to other areas, so you need to think beyond where the failure occurred and beef up those areas as well. You should beef up the entire shaft and the mounting area as well and where it attaches to the frame then continue to monitor that area.

The crush spacing on the 9 inch bearing needs to be the thickness of a factory ford backing plate. If I recall its an 1/8 to 3/16 of an inch. I cant get to mine without tearing it all apart but like I said an 1/8 or so would be much better than the nothing you have now. You are really pushing on that seal and likely putting to much push on the bearing assembly also. Like setting a trailer axle nut way too tight. That bearing assembly inside that tube is a tapered bearing, just unitized.

The ford 9" housing your using is an OE housing. Its meant to have the backing plate behind the bearing retainer. New 9" housings have a wider bearing area that wont support drum brakes. I wrote an article in bronco Driver about converting this to rear disks and it includes cutting the drum backing plate to fit with the bearing retainer. Crushing it down is not going to seal properly. I also recommend flipping the retainer so the open portion is on the top to help keep the gear oil in. Let me know if you would like a copy of the article in Bronco Driver.

@22:38, that is NOT how you pack bearings. To be fair they may have just cut out the proper bits. I recommend putting a nice blob of grease in the palm of one hand, press the large side of the bearing into the grease again and again until it begins coming up through the other side. You force it through the bearings, thus packing them. (Probably just search how to pack wheel bearings, I'm sure there are many videos demonstrating the process.)

@@christopherwedemeyer2993 so that syrup is made in Vermont, just wondering Texas I don't think it's cold enough to make proper sap maybe I'm wrong. I will definitely look into trying it though. Have a great week

Go well, Tom. I’ve subscribed to your channel. Gonna miss seeing you at MORR, as the chemistry you bring adds so much. But safe in the knowledge that Kaulin, Rhett, Caitlin, Casey and Jake as the next generation will absorb Matt’s “Knowledge” and help evolve the channel. Not forgetting the editing crew. Go well, mate. Hope to see you visit MORR for a special guest appearance here an there. A fan from Tasmania, Australia

Don’t feel too bad about bending axles, I have seen prinoth snowcat axles fail just dropping off a snow bank onto dirt road one foot down. Snowcats are maintenance hogs and the final drives take the biggest beating of it all.

Tom Tom touched it..always blame the guy that left..😊

It is no surprise that the rear axle is bending. The force on the rear axle is DOUBLE the tension on the tread. Think of the rear axle wheel as a snatch block with a rope making a 180 around the pulley.
@robertutech16857 ай бұрын
That is correct! Matt look at the the front trunion on a dozer. You should add a strut rod that holds the pressure DIRECTLY on the axle tube parallel to to ground. The adjustment rod is actually adding stress to the axle.

Plus the steering brakes are on that axle..

Tension on top track is when going forward, short path around the power sprocket to get power to the ground. Top track in compression when in reverse, and then your long path to power around the back sprocket makes sense.

The Bombi is a one of kind snowcat , where else can you get a track rescue vehicle built by Matt and family and friends. It's a one of a kind. It's a tough beautiful machine.

Seeing that axle bent and then remembering when Matt welded one of the guide wheels back on the original Bombi... wow, how the heck did that weld ever hold?!😂
@MattsOffRoadRecovery7 ай бұрын
It doesn’t look like it, but I do know a little bit about welding and a little bit about engineering. I don’t catch everything every single time. But I can’t imagine being able to catch every single thing every single time on a hand built vehicle the first time. We do always seem to get the core correct, and then we make the adjustments we need until we have a killer unit we can count on
@CarswithNash7 ай бұрын
@MattsOffRoadRecovery You definitely don't have to explain all that to me since I have also built hand built vehicles... I'm a big fan of your work and have followed every minute of every build. This channel used to be "Matt's Garage", you had actually watched one of my videos and subscribed when you were still small.
