The blocking is tying the plywood panels together to make it one solid shear wall rather than a few small ones stacked on top of eachother. Without it, it can still rack along that joint you are tying together, potentially shifting the weight of the roof off centre of its supporting wall

Great to see you working hard again on that list, Jenna and Nick. Just a suggestion (take it or leave it). For flooring, I wouldn't recommend anything dark. We made the mistake of putting a rosewood laminate on the main floor and every time the sun shines in through the windows we can see all of the dust. We are also pretty neat freaks and keep our place clean - however, we don't want to vacuum everyday. Therefore, if you haven't chosen already, choose something that is lighter that will hide dust and crumbs (just my opinion).

To add to this: also do not use white or anything too light either because even if the floor isn't dirty enough to clean it will look super dirty. The demo you do at 4:56 illustrates exactly why it is very important to look at all samples in the light and location they would be. Also consider that once you put a rich colour on a wall, it will reflect that color on to the adjacent walls, so the colour can look darker or completely different. I used to sell paints and coatings and it was very common for customers to come back to the store to say that wanted a different or lighter colour after looking at the paint sample in the area where they were going to use it. Fortunately, today's LED lights give you more options to control the light intensity and temperature.

When you're cutting small pieces like that on the table saw, a featherboard really helps and keeps you safer, and is easy to make. It also keeps your cuts nice and straight. You can buy plastic ones, or easily make one out of scrap wood, and just clamp it to the table.

Not sure if this has been asked yet....But when you start doing electrical make sure you wire this place for internet...IE ethernet cables everywhere because after you get these walls closed in it will be near impossible to do. I have been debating on leaving a comment about the shear walls for a while. It has been 20 years since I did my thesis on timber shear walls, and I have never designed one since, but the way you were doing it was really worrying me. Back in the day, the plywood went vertical to carry the load to the ground. Having a joint in your plywood drastically reduces the shear load capacity. Glad to see that blocking go in to carry the load across the joint!

That overhang in the front is still so beautiful to look at! I'm sure you both are so anxious to move on from the building. The progress has been fun to watch. You got this!

I have bumped out our walls when we renovated! One word of caution…. I bumped out the bathroom wall where the tub went But the plumbing stayed put. So the faucet handle and shower don’t line up with the drain 😂. I’m reminded every time I take a bath.

I would recommend a mix of light and dark (mostly light) and using dark for contrast. Break it up and looks more interesting. But ultimately, it's your house, do what makes you happy :)

I love the darker brown for the siding outside, but I’m not keen on the interior sample for the wall panelling. It looks very orange to me. We had a very similar colour panelling in our house about ten years ago and it was so difficult to find the right kind of furnishings that blended with it! We ended up ripping it down two years after installing it and went with a white oak, which was a million times better! A costly mistake, but one I thought I might just warn you about so that you can think ahead to your furnishing and colour choices 😃

more crossing off things, must feel good. Personally the darker outside cladding looks better to mem the lighter one looks grubby, like it got rained on grubby, I have brick, not much to choose from haha but i'm sure you'll make the right decision that suit you
