As a lifetime Celtics fan, and around as a kid to watch Russell vs Chamberlain I have to admit I couldn't stand Wilt. He was sooo , big, talented, coordinated and just darn good that the problem for his teams was that everything inevitably funneled to Wilt. On almost every big play that his needed offensively or defensively it was almost impossible to count on anyone but him. Bill Russell, was fantastic, utterly fantastic, but was completely integrated into Red's great "team" philosophy and comparisons because of this, and the difference in stature to Wilt prevents comparison, IMHO. Bill R was on a team that won 8 straight championships and 11 in 13 years, no other major league team in any sport in the U.S. comes close to that dominance. Probably never will. But as an individual talent Wilt was much more dominant over anyone else than Magic, Bird, Michael, or LeBron. He was just so far superior that it rarely even gets discussed. It wasn't his fault that he was around in that era, Babe Ruth was a different era too, but he too was head and shoulders over everyone else back then. Comparisons are just talk and opinion and stats never tell the whole story. But Wilt stands alone as the most dominant player in any professional sports IMO.
@mr.research48116 жыл бұрын
What specific games do you recall Mr. Kallenberg, if any?
@anthonym25046 жыл бұрын
That's all exactly right Chris! Funny how baseball still uses whatever stats from The Babe, and he still is almost always voted as the greatest player in history. How quick the NBA is to dismiss Wilt and his dominance. So many great players from his era have stated how great he was, how unstoppable he was, and how he would fare against today's stars. Even Kareem (who for some reason didn't like Wilt very much) talks about his dominance and athleticism. I heard from a few places (former player interviews) that the NBA told media outlets to dismiss any or all footage pre-1992. How true this is, I don't know.
@mr.research48116 жыл бұрын
Arch, don't mean to be negative, but this is Mr. Research you are responding to. But either way, you're fine. But in regards to the Babe, I often wonder, as do many, if these same pundits do not consider Josh Gibson as the greatest baseballer in history simply because of the league that he participated in. Or even Satchel Page as the greatest pitcher simply because of the precisely same reason. I did hear from another youtube video that Doc mentioned the league telling media outlets to dismiss any pre-'92 footage(I believe it was a Wilt one). I myself do not know yet if this is true or not, but either way, wouldn't surprise me one bit. I can also tell you that the Dipper himself mentions in his last two books the media not referencing certain records being official until somewhat recently, presumably because a multitude of media members are afraid of making today's players look worse than necessary, but in doing so, they step on the players from the Russell-Wilt era('56-73).
@anthonym25046 жыл бұрын
Mr. Research I agree with that too! There's also so many former players, mangers and sportwriters who would put up Josh Gibson and Satchel with the very best who ever played. Many consider Josh Gibson a better power hitter than the babe, but we'll never know. As far as basketball goes, Wilt was in the NBA, and took over his era moreso than any other player. I've heard so many people who think he played against 5' tall white centers. That's how uninformed people are. I believe it when I hear old pros who've seen all eras say that Wilt would dominate players from recent eras. They have been around watching and telling people of the awesome of a player Wilt was. I find it hilarious how people today won't believe the things the hear and see on these videos. The fact that Wilt was not just one thing, but all of them should be enough. But the fact that Wilt still owns 72 NBA records and is second in God knows how many point to one thing. Wilt is the GOAT. The most dominant force sports has ever seen.
@mr.research48116 жыл бұрын
Thank you Arch. As long as we're here on Earth, we probably will never know if Josh(and several others, like Cool Papa Bell for instance)was a better power hitter than da Babe, however, the Word says we do know in part. I do know that Josh had several seasons where he either hovered around, or surpassed the highest official MLB home run totals for a season, according to the data that I uncovered a few years back online. I also know that during Ted Williams .408BA season, Josh had several seasons where he EXCEEDED that total in his league, and that, was, as far as I am concerned, against tougher pitchers, including obviously Satch himself. We do know that the Babe, as great as he was, NEVER ONCE, had to face the so-called Black pitchers from the Negro Leagues. If so, how different would his and other career MLB players' careers have transpired? I also know that in the book about Satchel which came out a few years back(maybe you or someone you know have read this as well)where he was quoted as saying he recalled having 55 no-hitters(or shut-outs, if anyone can correct me here, please do so). The official MLB record is 7 or 8 by Nolan. To me, that's almost like comparing Wilt's 60pts games (32) with the runner up MJ has 5(can't recall Kobe's or Elgin's 60pt games off-hand).

freepotatoez Wilt played against Bill Russell (a black guy who grew up in the city of Oakland), Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (a black guy from New York City), and many other great players. It’s more likely that a white farmer would get into the NBA now then it was then, given that there are a lot more roster spots available with there being 30 teams instead of anywhere from 8 to 20, as there was until like the 80s. The influence of Wilt, Kareem, and Russell led to Sam Bowie and Hakeem Olajuwon going before Michael Jordan because they made the center position the most important position, but Jordan’s influence didn’t prevent Michael Olowokandi from going before Vince Carter, and Lebron’s influence didn’t prevent Greg Oden from going before Kevin Durant or Deandre Ayton from going before Luka Doncic. That should be enough to tell you that Jordan and Lebron aren’t as influential as the “white farmers” of the 60s and 70s.

@Davek71105 жыл бұрын
Exactly. Wilt excelled in BB, Track, Volleyball, Weightliftng, and who knows what else.? Thorpe excelled in Football, Track, Olympic Champion in Decathlon, played Pro Baseball for a number of years. He was 50 years ahead of his time. Finally Bo Jackson: Football, Baseball, Track, and very strong. These three were probably the greatest athletes of the 20th Century hands down. and you have to give the greatest to Wilt. and as a little extra: Thorpe ran over Dwight Eisenhower(future President) in a game against Army in about 1912 and injured him. True story!! Thorpe was about 6'2" and weighed about 200 lbs which was big for that time..(average man was about 5'6"), and he was the fastest on the field by far. Ran back many punts for touchdowns, weaving his way through every defender. Thorpe was my hero when I was young... Have read many books about him! :-) Too bad he like the bottle too much and after age 30 or so, he was diminished. But a great guy. died about 1950.

Harvey Pollack who tracked all of Wilt's games knows how many blocks Wilt got, he tracked Wilt's blocks. I believe there is footage of that game, a few clips on Wilt Chamberlain archive I believe are from that game, Wilt spins and uses a drop step on Darral Imhoff and dunks, and the two other clips Wilt scores on the pick n roll by finishing with dunks. Mel Counts had 26 points that game on 13/19 from the field at 68.4%FG. Wilt had 20+ block games before, nothing new.

NBA did keep track of blocks, steals, offensive rebounds, and defensive rebounds. Wilt so totally dominated in every stat it was decided not to make em official until Wilt retired. At time folks reported Wilts performances, no motivation to compare Wilt to Air Jordan existed. Absolutely no motivation to extend Wilt extra credit, extra rebounds, extra blocks, etc., existed. For accuracys sake, lets say Wilt did not block 24. Would NBA fan base be far off? 4 blocks off. It is safe to concede 20 blocks if 24 is a number NBA fan base & media conceded. Max Pollack, who was the statistician for the game, maintained he did. As you pointed out, the points, rebounds, and assists statistics are verified facts. There is no reason to believe the statistician would harm his reputation by making up phony numbers. If you also realize that the NBA was played entirely differently before the advent of the three point line, makes those other two stats more credible. Since there was no incentive to take long shots (every basket was only worth 2 points), it made more sense to take shots closer to the basket. Since Wilt averaged 22.9 rebounds per game over his career, it seems reasonable to believe he could easily have a significant number of games in which he had 10+ blocked shots. He likely also would have a decent number of interceptions on errant passes with teams trying to "kick the ball back out." Getting 10+ in a number of games is not a huge stretch. Therefore, I have far more reason to believe it did happen than to believe it didn't.

But actually Wilt has the record anyway for most points in a triple-double, the league simply didn't record his blocks until his retirement, but if you look in the right papers in the right cities, you will find his block totals for certain games. From what I have read so far, I don't think he had double-figure blocks in the 100pt game, but the 5 other 70pt games(except for probably the Mar. '63 game at Syracuse) I am pretty convinced he did have AT LEAST double-digits blocks, if not far more in a few of these games. But concerning 60pt triple-doubles, let's also consider the assist interpretation is FAR more liberal than it was prior to the merger. Based on today's interpretation, the last NBA/ABA player to do it was Doc in a quadruple-OT game on Valentines' day 75 vs San Diego Conquistidoors. The last one to do it in regulation would have been Rick Barry in Mar. '74 vs Portland, and this was without 3pt line. He may have had 70 if line was in existence back then

First of all to have that number of blocks and steals would certainly not be unusual at all for Wilt in his prime, so I have no doubt he did this multiple times in his illustrious career. As to this night, the best we have to go on are the reports of witnesses themselves.

It is unfortunate that Chick Hearn (the inventor of such iconic definitions as slam dunk, dribble drive, etc) and Hot Rod Hundley have passed because they always gave all the unofficial stats at the end of the game. They were broadcasted for this game by KNX in LA. I listened to many a games on radio and remember that the Lakers announcing team with Chick Hearn always kept stats like blocked shots and steals and passed it on to us in radioland. I always loved Wilt's answer to Jordan: "When you were playing, they made rules to make it easier to score, in my day, they made rules to keep me from scoring!" Wow. GOAT.
@mr.research48114 жыл бұрын
I know they announced Wilt's block totals for the 71-72 season games, but what about Wilt's first Laker season? Or even Gene Wiley & LeRoy Ellis Laker tenure together? I know both of them blocked 20 shots at least once in very limited minutes(Gene with Lakers, LeRoy with Baltimore).

On March 18, 1968 Wilt Chamberlain allegedly dropped an unofficial (blocks and steals weren't recorded until the 1973-74 season) quintuple double with 53 points, 32 rebounds, 14 assists, 24 blocks, and 11 steals. Harvey Pollack, Philadelphia's Director of Statistical Information, recorded the blocks and steals back then.

This is before gamescore was introduced. Today Michael Jordan has the highest gamescore of 64.6. Air Jordan scored 69 points, 18 rebounds, 6 assists, and 4 steals. Now imagine if the Gamescore was introduced earlier than Wilt's Quintuple-double. How much gamescore would he get?

Some great comments on this video. Yes he is the all time best defensive player. No official proof, but yes, he was more than capable of blocking more shots than Bill Russel, and probably did. Probably averaged 15, or more blocks per game for his career, not to mention altered shots, because of the intimidation factor. That is a lot of points that the opposing teams didn't get to score. Would the high flying dunkers have been hurt if Wilt, or, I'll give it, Bill Russel, were in the paint? I would say there would be a good chance of it. Prime to prime, that would include Jordan and James. Wilt could block a flying dunk at the apex, and with enough force against the ball to stop the shooter's upper body motion, which would take the shooter's feet from under him. I have seen that happen, on TV, real time, and on at least one one of these videos. Add his scoring and, I believe all time best, rebounding, and as Rick Barry stated, There isn't anybody else who even comes close to doing what Wilt could do, at both ends of the court.

Wilt Chamberlain holds the record for most career double-doubles in the NBA with 968, Wilt Chamberlain's total games during his career; Wilt Chamberlain played in 1,045 games in his career. Just over 92% of wilts games were double-doubles Lets put that in perspective....if he made so many double-double its impossible for him not to have made a huge number of triple-doubles or better....blocks and steals were not counted in Wilts era, while modern assists favour the present players and not the Wilts era because they were judged differently....

I would think 10 blocks would be a piece of cake that night, and the assist are also possible since one year he led the league in assist. So it is possible with Wilt. The steals might be a reach, who knows. 10 steals is a lot.

vin russo he was actually very good at stealing the ball and reading passing lanes because he used to play point guard for the globetrotters and he had quick hands and amazing strength so he could just snatch the ball away with one hand so it would be possible for him possibly
@JStarStar007 жыл бұрын
The official NBA All time single game steals record is 11. I think it’s very far fetched to think Wilt would tie this record. Huge dominating centers usually don’t get a lot of steals - they want to stay near the basket to get rebounds and block shots. I think Wilt probably did have numerous quadruple doubles with points-rebounds-blocks-assists, especially during his big assist seasons of 1966-68. But quintuple double is harder because 10 steals is almost an impossible number. Plus also if the opposing teams saw Wilt was on pace for double digits in both blocks and steals, they’d just run all their plays away from Wilt. In Wilt’s day the NBA was very strict about zone defense rules and most matchups were very much one on one. If Wilt was annihilating the opposing center to the extent by halftime he was halfway to double digits in blocks and steals, the opposing coach would say, “hey every time we throw the ball to our center Dave Doofus, Wilt either smacks it back in his face or steals it. We probably better just quit throwing the ball to Dave Doofus.”
@jaranarm6 жыл бұрын
Why wouldn't Wilt be able to tie the steals record? Hakeem Olajuwon and Tim Duncan both have recorded 8 steals (Hakeem did it twice), David Robinson and Kevin Garnett had 7 (KG doing so twice), and even Ben Wallace got 6 steals five times. Heck, Tom Gugliotta recorded 8 steals in a game once. I don't find it farfetched at all that Wilt could get 10 or 11.

Not necessarily. With his wingspan, blocking a shot and then holding the ball would be both a block AND a steal. In addition, intercepting errant passes by opponents would be plausible.

@mr.research48116 жыл бұрын
The second game you are referencing(for those whom are unaware still) is Nov. 19, 1961 vs Chicago(I believe I'm correct, if not, please feel free to correct me, because I also know later that season, in the game prior to the 100pt game, he also blocked 12 of Bellamy's shots, and if you count all the additional ones he probably would have had on the other players, I believe it might have exceeded 20. But I might be wrong here. I certainly hope not though. The first game I am not quite certain when that was as of yet. When do you recall it being? Thank you for your insight here.
@botaco6 жыл бұрын
Mr. Research you are correct about the second games. I now believe it may have been the Chicago Packards. I don’t remember that he blocked 12 of Bellamy’s shots, but I vividly remember watching on TV blocking Bellamy’s first 11. I know Wilt had over 70 points and 35 rebounds. I think Bellamy scored in the high 30s. I remember his game against the St. Louis Hawks and he blocked the last sixteen shots. It did not seem fair but he did. No records of Wilt’s blocks were kept them. I have head a couple of refs sat that he and Russell probably averages 10 to 12 blocks a game and on ref said that Wilt once blocked 26 shots in a game. He is one of three players to have a quadruple games of at least 10 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists and ten blocks. I believe that The Dream and the Admiral did the same..
@mr.research48116 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much Botaco for your response, I really appreciate it. In the 70pts 35reb game that you were referencing above, Bellamy had 35pts 23reb; but that was Jan 13, 1962. I have a complete box score of this particular game. What do you recall about Wilt's shot-blocking in this game? Upon studying the FGM & FGA for Bells and the PF & SF, it seems like his total for this game HAD 2 be at least 20, if not more.

Botaco, if you even somewhat misunderstood my last question I apologize. What I was mainly wondering is this: in the St. Louis game that he blocked the final 16 shots what season do believe that was? The steals and blocks wasn't official in the NBA until the 1973-74 season after Wilt retired not 1971 where he still played in the league. However, our wish as the basketball fan that the league must discover the unofficial blocks for Wilt Chamberlain and Bill Russell into official blocks and they would be the top 2 all-time block shots leader with bigger numbers than the Dream holds.
