In 1968 Wilt set a postseason record 49.3 minutes a game against the Knicks, leading all players in points, rebounds, and assists. In his last postseason series, the 1973 finals, he played every minute of every game being a few months shy of turning 37 years old. 8 of Wilt's 9 postseason triple doubles came within this last half of his career. In 1967 Wilt set a postseason record 41 rebounds over Bill Russell, set a record four consecutive triple doubles, and shattered the record for most rebounds in a triple double with 38. Post knee injury Wilt had to play in four postseason series that went all the way to a game 7. In those games Wilt averaged 24.3 points, 24.5 rebounds, 5.8 assists, and shot .603 from the field while putting in a staggering 47.3 minutes a game. @chrisp22723 жыл бұрын
@@AndyZach The game is just different. Wilt could play the whole game because guys never bent their knees more than about 20 degrees from vertical. It was a jog up and down sport. It wasn’t a dig in on defense sport because there were too few good defenders (all the slow white guys) versus the handful of black athletes. I always like to steer people toward Jerry West highlights from 1970ish for context. He just moseys around the court at half speed until he’s open. He also does this as a 6’2” shooting guard. If he played today, he’s being defended by a guy 6’6”+ with a nearly 7’ wingspan. He might even draw a small forward who’s closer to 6’9” Wilt wasn’t a good shooter by any means. He had that 7-up (as in he looked like a 7 when he released the ball) finger roll and that was about it. Look up the top scoring centers of the era. A lot of the other good big men were in the 6’9” range (including Russell). Russell is another great example of a guy who was a product of his era. His offense was bad. And his defense was so good because they stood in the lane and waited for 6’4” white guys to come to them. Russell was the long arm of the law in his day and could pick up a mountain of stats without leaving the lane. He’d be forced to play on the ball defense on the perimeter if he played today. Good luck.

Wilt's lowest scoring average in a postseason series came against the Warriors in 1973 where he only averaged 7.0 points, but then he also pulled down 23.6 rebounds (way above this season rebounding average of 18.6), outrebounded Nate Thurmond (who came in second to Wilt in rebounding that year) and defensively held him to .373 shooting (when Nate shot .446 against the rest of the league) and Wilt blocked at least 29 shots in that 5-game romp over Golden State, the team that eliminated Kareem's 60-win Bucks in the previous round that year. Wilt averaged more playing time in his last NBA postseason than he did during his rookie season.

@E BO That's correct. As a Laker, Wilt only averaged 15.8 points on .531 fg% in the playoffs. But in the games where LA faced elimination Wilt upped his averages to 25.4 points on .602 fg%. Even in his post knee injury years, when he was asked to score more for his team he would do it. When he was not scoring he'd move his focus to another part of his game that he excelled in. His role and statistics were always fluctuating and every version of Wilt was molded by his coaches.

Yes...the best Wilt video by far. I must admit, this video gives me new found respect for him. I'm 50 and watched Kareem and Bill Walton play but never had the pleasure of watching Russell & Wilt play. I gotta say that Lebron, Jordan, Westbrook, Vince Carter, Shaq, etc...had NOTHING on Wilt when it comes to athleticism and dominance. He blocked Lew Alcindor 2x in a row on the Sky Hook in Lew's prime. That is arguably the most mind boggling thing I've seen in my lifetime of watching NBA basketball and I owned a Satellite dish in the 80's and the NBA league pass for most of the 2000's. Just incredible the amount of skill and athleticism for his size...oh my goodness!!!!!!!!!!!!

My quarantine time NBA realization is that I have not given enough respect to Wilt. Last two days I am watching every available thing about Wilt on KZbin and other sources, and I feel guilty for not giving him enough props. I always considered him as a super-strong athlete who just dominated a bunch of mediocre players of that era but I never considered him as a legit basketball talent. Although some Wilt numbers I still consider to be floated due to weak competition, wilt was phenomenal player. He would still be a superstar in any freakin era. Sorry Big Dipper. RIP!!!

imagine the type of hard fouls he received. He said he retired after his first season because the game was too physical. Then he came back. I think the owner gave him money under the table to come back. WIlt was mainly the reason the nba grew enough for them to add 9 teams by the time he retired. ANd the celtics didnt sell out a single game with all the winning they did. So wilt was a huge reason the nba grew. ANd i find it funny the year he retired the nba so happens to introduce the blocks per game stat. What a coincidence.

When you see this guy and think about the Jordan-Lebron goat debate, you can't help but shake your head. Wilt is probably above anyone that has ever touched a basketball. Yes, the game has changed and players are probably more athletic and skilled, but you have to look at every era in its own context. When you do that, it becomes clear that Wilt stood higher above his era than Jordan did in his. Had Wilt played in the 80's, 90's or 2000's, he would have acquired the modern big man skills just as easily as anyone out there.

The story involving Mel Daniels being told beginning at 0:47 is from Bob Netolicky of the ABA Pacers. And it occurred during an ABA game in 1973-74 when the Pacers played the San Diego Conquistadors, who were coached by Wilt. Flynn Robinson was Wilt's teammate back when they both played for the Lakers on that great 1971-72 team. There's a video where a bunch of the Pacers were reunited and Bob told this same story. He started off by saying (quoting teammate Roger Brown) "We played 82 games, we had 82 fights, and Mel Daniels started them all". And Mel Daniels is there to confirm that the story is true. The Pacers of that era were an extremely talented team. Mel Daniels, George McGinnis (who was probably the most powerfully built forward of his time), Roger Brown and Freddie Lewis. Daniels, McGinnis and Brown all made it to the HoF. No wonder the Pacers won 3 championships in the ABA. It's too bad that Daniels didn't make it into the NBA. He did play a few games for the New York Nets in his very last season but he was cut early on. Apparently because of the way things ended for him in the ABA, he lost his passion for the game. He played a season in Italy after the ABA folded, and that probably didn't help when he tried to make his comeback in the US. It's also too bad Wilt never got to suit up for the SD Conquistadors. He signed a 3-year deal with SD to be a player-coach. But the Lakers challenged Wilt's right to play in the ABA, and they won the legal battle. This is because Wilt owed the Lakers the option year of his contract. So Wilt was allowed to coach in the ABA, but could not play.

@slip satch Yes, he played for the NY Nets, after the Nets moved to the NBA. Here's the background: after a very successful career with the Pacers, Mel was traded to the Memphis Sounds at the start of the 1974-75 season. He was obviously disappointed to be leaving the Pacers, but he was excited about being able to play with Roger Brown and Freddie Lewis, who were his Pacers teammates also traded to the Sounds. Unfortuately, neither player lasted 10 games with the Sounds. Both were traded to other ABA teams. Keep in mind that the ABA was really starting to crumble at this point, so there were many decisions made for financial reasons that were not necessarily good basketball decisions. Mel's numbers fell significantly with the Sounds, and they were no longer even a team in 1975-76. Mel decided to play in Italy. The next year, the NBA/ABA merged, but the NBA only took four teams: Pacers, Nets, Nuggets and Spurs. Mel was signed as a free agent by the NBA Nets in Oct'76 and was waived a couple of months later after appearing in just 11 games, thus ending his career. It was even more surprising that Mel would be gone, because the Nets did not really have a decent center that year. Mel was plagued with a bad back at that point in his career, and he just wasn't the same player.
@dmichael1004 жыл бұрын
@slip satch Havlicek retired in the 77-78 season which was the second season after the merger. Mel Daniels played just a few games of the 76-77 season and was cut by the Nets. There is a pre-season game from the 76-77 season on my channel (dmichael100) between the Nets and Knicks and Mel plays in that one some and blocks a few shots.

The season in which Wilt played a style of game, at least statistically, most like Bill Russell was in the Lakers' magical '71-'72 season. Wilt averaged 14.8 pts per game and 19.2 rebounds. At that stage of his career, although he was still capable of higher scoring games, he was surrounded by exceptional scorers like Jerry West (although past his prime), Gail Goodrich and solid scorers like Jim McMillan. Wilt, that season, was mostly a defensive-oriented Center who was one of the best passing Big Men in the game and still one of the best Rebounders and Shot Blockers. Wilt's ability to block shots in the later stages of his career was a sight to behold. I remember Wilt blocking shot after shot against the Bulls in the WC Semifinals that year. The Lakers, that season, coached by former Celtic great Bill Sharman, truly mirrored the best Russell-led Celtics teams from '56-'69. Lakers won a then record 69 games, including 33 consecutive wins and they defeated an injury-plagued, but still, very formidable Knicks team to win their first Chip as the L.A. Lakers. The Knicks defeated the Lakers twice to win the Chip, but '71-'72 was a, one-for-the-ages, season for the Lakers.
