Hey Mark. I am always amazed that no-one picks up on The Monkees when 12ers are being discussed. Mike Nesmith's first guitar in The Monkees was a Gretsch 6075 Burst 12er and later a 6076 Natural, also a 12. Later Gretsch gave him a 6118-12 Chet Atkins Country Gentleman, and he played all of these throughout his career, both in and after the Monkees. People bagged The Monkees and snidely referred to them as the PreFab Four. He was a reasonable songwriter and a good producer. But above all he was a fine guitarist. He was the most musically experienced of the quartet when they formed, perhaps why Gretsch gifted him the guitars. To back their TV success they went on tour. At a dinner in LA, with the Beatles, who were actually very Pro Monkees, someone played a tape of a little known guitarist named Hendrix, and they booked Jimi as their opening act. He played 7 dates with them and left. I can't imagine what impression Jimi might have made on their pre-teen audiences. Frank Zappa was also a fan. OK, I'll 'fess up, I was a Monkees fan too. Their TV show was almost required watching for my generation. I started High School in 1967. Almost their entire catalog featured Nesmith on a 12, though I've heard that he played a Gretsch 6 on 'Last Train to Clarkesville', one of their biggest hits. If he did, I can't pick it. The 12 is very prominent in the opening of 'Pleasant Valley Sunday'.

Hey Orville. I couldn't agree with you more. I do Pleasant Valley Sunday in 7 different videos. :). In one of my videos I even opt for the Monkees over Hendrix in a head to head with Simon. I've also done Last Train in 2 or 3 videos. The guitar on Pleasant Valley Sunday isn't actually a 12-string. It's a Les Paul Triple tracked. But, he did use the 12-string to play it live on the 68 tour and in the video. Mike does play the 12-string on The Girl I Knew Somewhere and You Told Me and a couple more. Those songs are on Headquarters. That's the first album that Peter and Mike played. Supposedly, many of their parts were later dubbed over but who really know. The first two albums were Louie Shelton, James Burton, Wayne Erwin, and I'm sure Tommy T played on something. LOL.

@@8MinuteAxe Mark I am impressed . You really know the Monkees history. I am a huge fan myself . Peter Tork & Nesmith were very solid Musicians. Tork was a multi- instrumentalist . Guitar, Banjo, Keyboards and Bass . I play a lot of their lesser known songs on my 12 string all the time. exp. I wanna be free, Take a Giant step, Girl I knew somewhere . etc

The Rooftop Singers cover of "Walk Right In" featured two of the beasts. 1960, or so, if memory serves! There is a black and white video kicking around youtube somewhere. That was my inauguratioj into the twelve string sound. Had the pleasure of seeing Gordon Lightfoot in concert a couple months ago. He played for two hours, all on twelves! His breathing is labored from emphysema and he kind of gasps his vocals. When it came time for "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald", he put everything he had into it, sounding like the old Gordon for those few minutes. While the riffs were on keyboard and six string, as always, that twelve string sound was underneath it all, driving the "Fitz" to her destruction. While I was not familiar with the last song you played, that twelve was spine tingling and unique!

I like it, although I thought there was a girl singer in that group! Perhaps she was ill that day... An article I saw eons ago said that the Rooftop singers were looking for a female singer for "Walk Right In" and having little success until they found a jazz singing lady who did it as a little joke. Probably made her a few more bucks than she was expecting. Not the first song I learned on guitar, but one of the early ones, long before I had a 12 string. Still play it. Thanks for directing me to that vid!

I love the way you rolled the 45s across the screen. Paul Simon is a great songwriter and it was great to see one of his songs in the video today. I was not familiar with some of the later songs. I am an old dude and not familiar with much of any music that came out after the late 70s. I missed your live intro as I was packing some gear into my car for a family outing today. I am taking a couple of my guitars at the request of the party's host.

I grew up in the 60’s so I really don’t know the last few songs. As always I am amazed by how many Rock songs include a 12 string. I guess when I think of Paul Simon I don’t think of 12 string ones lics. Always love hearing some great music.
@8MinuteAxe
@8MinuteAxe 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Thomas. I don't think of Paul as a 12 stringer either. His fingerstyle playing is very subtle and it really shows his talent for songwriting and harmony. The guitar lines never get in the way of the vocals. They either follow right along, drop out, or provide just enough extra harmony. I'm working on Scarborough Fair with one of my students right now. That's the perfect example of his brilliant arranging. I really appreciate you checking out the video and leaving a comment. Enjoy the rest of your weekend and take care. Mark

@@8MinuteAxe I agree, his finger picking is phenomenal. Maybe one of the best finger pickers ever. Sadly his brilliance goes unnoticed by way too many. I made the mistake years ago and stopped playing because guys like this are just too good. I decided that playing my guitar is for my amusement or maybe it’s amazement. Most because I am amazed that I can play at all. Apparently I am better than I realize because so many have said how much they enjoyed my playing. I think they are just being kind. So I soldier on. Keep up the great work

My first sighting of a 12 in a rock band was, of course, The Beatles and then Richie Furary's black Gibson 12 in Buffalo Springfield. Hey Jasmine. Now that I'm two years into making 12 string videos you'd think the well would be running dry but every time I look in another direction several more pop up. This one was really fun to make. Thanks so much for checking it out. I appreciate your time and your comment. Take care and be well. Mark

Hey Apryl. I've done 4 videos just on Wish You Were Here and I've done parts of it in 12 videos. I've discussed Gilmours guitars, broken down the solo, talked about the genesis of the song. This is a video about deep cuts. I've also done 50 Beatles videos, 15 zep video, many Bryds and Tom Petty videos. Over 100 videos on the 12 string. Have a great weekend. I do appreciate you checking it out. Mark

Hey James. I love classical gas and I've been working on Tommy Emmanuals version. I've been focusing on fingerstyle for the past two years. No 12 string in Classical Gas. I did do a video on songs most people think have a 12 string: Dust in the Wind, Pleasant Valley Sunday, Here Comes the Sun and many more. Doubled guitars but no 12. Thanks so much for checking out the video. I appreciate your time and comment. Enjoy the rest of your weekend. Mark

@8MinuteAxe
@8MinuteAxe 2 жыл бұрын
Hey IBJI. Oh yeah, you need a good 12 string capo, especially for an acoustic 12 string. I use a Kyser 12 string capo. It's longer, has more tension, and more padding. I'll use a Shubb sometimes on an electric 12 with a skinnier neck (the Rick) but I always use a Kyser for the acoustics. I feel like it's a trade off, if put on properly the the Shubb is less likely to pull the strings but takes longer to put on (you can't do it on the fly in the middle of a song) and the Kyser is quick but tends to yank the lower strings a bit. Thanks so much for checking out the video. I appreciate your time and comment. Have a great day and take care. mark

I really wish that you would do a video the 12 string in the '80s/'90s hair/glam bands. I think that your viewers would be surprised at how used them since some of the songs were on the top ten. We once discussed Cinderella. They were one of the first/main groups that brought it back, but there were a lot of others. Surprisingly, 'Coming Home' reached #20 on the Billboard. Their 'Heartbreak Station' only teached #44. I seem to remember 'Heartbreak Station' getting more air and video play. kzbin.info/www/bejne/oF7UeGmlarNqpbM kzbin.info/www/bejne/i6bImJ6bZ5elmqM

I remember when we talked about Cinderella. I love Heartbreak Staition. I have a video planned called 12 string classics of the 90s: Heartbreak Station, Mysterious Ways, Free Fallin, I Stay Away, Mama, I'm Comin Home, what else? I know I have 10 more on a list downstairs but feed me some if you dont mind. I will def do the video before the year is out. Regarding the 80s, I was halfway through the video when I delved into the Smiths. I got into the weeds trying to figure out when Marr is doubling the Rick 6 and when he is using the 12 and ended up never finishing the video.

@@8MinuteAxe Mr. Big used a 12 for their cover of 'Wild World' while Stevens used a six. Poison used a 12 string for 'Every Rose Has Its Thorns' and 'Something to Believe In'. Nelson 'Love And Affection' Skid Row 'I Remember You' WASP 'The Idol' Lita Ford 'Lisa' and she may have used one for the intro for 'If I Close My Eyes Forever' Extreme 'Wholehearted' A lot of bands used 12s during their MTV Unplugged shows when they may have not used one in the original recording.
