Absolutely! I consider his dune a classic, I haven't seen the new dunes but from the trailers n shorts it seems there's some stereotypical/cheesy writing/acting. And while the visuals are impressive I'm not sure I'm such a fan of how muted the colours are, I always pictured the dune universe as being full of colour. Lynch's version had substance, yeah the effects are dated and it's not perfect but it's gonna be hard to top imo

Bro, it was a big argument. David Lynch almost quit the Dune project. He said to them, "HAVE ANY OF YOU READ THE BOOK?!" As he shouts at them. There were a few interviews about it all with David Lynch. It is so sad this happened because David Lynch had a better vision in how the two or three movies could have been even using the same props and costumes as the first movie to save money and improve a bit in other special effects. Not only did he have a better vision for Dune, but he was stripped with any say in how to edit the movie! He was not allowed to edit or have any say the cuts he filmed and directed. On top of all this, David Lynch was working with Frank Herbert, the author of Dune! Even though Frank Herbert had no say in the movie, David Lynch brought him in the project to exchange ideas and such. It is so sad how this project could have been so legendary if they gave David Lynch the power to do what needed to be done for Dune. The costumes and props and music were also researched by David Lynch and Frank Herbert and oked by them. So yeah, man, I could only imagine. It's so sad, but at least we still have this amazing movie from David Lynch. It is a classic, and what got me onto Dune.

Put him in line with a ton of talented directors through the years. The studios monolopy on creative choices have turned people away from film making for life. 1984 dune might not be a GREAT movie, but you can see the amount of effort and work that went into it, with limited technology as well!

I get it. It’s also a bit like seeing an old love happy and successful in the arms of someone else when you were trying to court them years ago. That’s heartbreaking.

Poor guy, you could tell he really wanted to make something special with 84 Dune, I think if he got his say in the end and got 2 parts like he wanted, Denis might not even have gotten to make the new adaptation. Hopefully Lynch finds some comfort in the fact that it was ever adapted well at all

But I really like the 84 version. It has all the goofy 80s vibes but great sci fi scenes and amazing practical effects.

Damn that's sad, maybe for the children of dune they could ask him to help codirect or something. Could help his confidence on the movie.

Original Dune rocked back in the day! My friends and I watched it in the theater, at the drive-in, on VHS, cable, and broadcast television. We are the cult for which this is a classic!

I think he laid a foundation that assisted in making future sci-fi films to come. The plots in Dune are very complex, and given 1984 technology, he did the best he could.

I’ve seen clips and while it can come off as campy, it was no more so than any movie of the 80’s. Lynch did a good job with the tools he had at hand and should be proud to have made his mark. There are many who love the ‘84 version; enough so that no director should ever doubt their skill.

I loved his version and I could tell if he had the control he wanted it would be remembered much more fondly. The vision was there.

It is was hard for those of us who read the books first. I was named for the lady Jessica back in 78 so it was one of the first books I reached for when I started going through my parents sci-di and fantasy library. The 84 version was disjointed and so altered and abbreviated that I think it was my first true experience of the disappointing-movie-adaptation-vs-beloved-book-heartbreak. I am glad that that was not how the director envisioned it!

There's one aspect of Lynch's version which I think was superior, which were Paul's visions. In Villeneuve's version they were way too clean and clear. At their worst, they almost look like commercials. In Lynch's version, they are genuinely trippy and disturbing, which felt more book accurate. Of course, Villeneuve's is still better in pretty much everything else, but it's still worth mentioning.

I love the old Dune! I think some aspects of it are more akin to how I imagined them reading the book; particularly Arrakeen, it’s interior design is oddly similar to my original imaginings. I love the new movies, too, I think they’re absolutely fantastic-I love anything Dune.

I remember hearing about that a couple years ago. David Lynch is supportive if Denis Villeneuve’s version without seeing the movies. It’s a sweet response, but heartbreaking to think that he was that hurt by making that film 40 years ago.

The original Dune movie established a lot of visual cues and iconic set design elements, such as the look of the still suits and the worms, the gom jabbar, costume references, that have endured through every other adaptation. I still appreciate how unique that movie is. The new film might be totally different if not for it's existence
