My mom was one of those lesbians (specifically a nurse)! Her brother had passed from AIDS as a result of substance use, and so she had asked for bereavement leave, but she saw that no one else was going to care for the AIDS patients on the unit, so she didn't take leave. She wanted to ensure that her patients had at least one person who cared about their wellbeing, and ensured they could die with dignity and care. My other mom was in med school in the heart of the US Bible Belt and later residency in a city beginning its heroin epidemic. She had a very similar experience of being one of the only healthcare providers to actually treat and care for AIDS patients.

It’s so interesting to me just the fact that the whole community was called ‘gay’. Because gay means happy, or at least that was the common definition before. As someone who struggles with finding an appropriate label, I think having an overarching term like gay or queer is really helpful. However, it’s also important to have some more specific labels so we can find community and honor those in said community.
