Very useful. However, how do you randomise the distribution of the color variation over the clones?

Randomization is done by the gradient being applied to MoGraphIDs. The mathematical function for randomness should be therefore the same as the one from the Cloner itself.

The problem with the geometry id color is that a new seed is generated whenever a new machine opens the file or the project structure changes. This has been a deal breaker in production for me. Its a very useful tool besides that.

Hm, cannot confirm this. Opening a scene with Color Variation Shader based on RSGeomIDColor looks exactly the same when opened on a different machine, so the seed stays the same. The seed does change when rendering to the Picture Viewer, no matter if with / without with Team Render/ multiple machines. But this stays consistent A) between render clients, B) with just one machine and C) multiple times reopening the scene. Thats ok as I use this just as a subtle color variation of subsidiary scene elements. :-)

The Jitter node offers only numeric variations of a color. You cannot determine exact colors. eg. from a color swatch folder or a gradient. So the solution above is more art directible.
