My daughter took 3 years of German in high school...her enthusiasm for both Rammstein and the language also got my boys involved in learning German and the band...we had frequent Rammstein parties, rocking out to concert videos, albums, and watching many videos on KZbin. Good times, good times! 👍🏼🍺

My wife is of a German background, so I have a basic working knowledge of the language. I find that the lyrics often indulge in clever wordplay, with homonyms and what seem to be puns. Till's delivery is very theatrical, something found in opera, where one must enunciate so that the audience can easily understand the lyrics, making the potentially ambiguous sounds less so. It also has the effect of conveying a sense of energy and purpose, which works well with the powerful (simple maybe, but it really bounces) music the band creates. Part of the fun lies in finding out what the lyrics mean, especially when you see some of the bad translations that are out there. Great Video!!

I think the most interesting part is that the lyrics are inspired by the music instead of the other way around. That's impressive.

big Rammstein fan(non German) what i can say from analyse them over all as a band is they tend to grossly satirize aspects of society culture and trends to the point of shock, lyrics are awesome, and the fact that they refuse to be a part of a trend and come up with original stuff makes them not just unique but eyeopening

What the dude of number 5 basicly said is that the voice should be an instrument so it can convey something, even if the lyrics aren't understood. FINALLY! Someone who shares my view on vocals. Love it!

My thoughts exactly. I don't understand German (save for the occasional basic word) and have always taken Till's voice as yet another instrument in the band. When you don't know what is being said, it allows you to focus more on the music as a whole and not solely on what is being said. I actually kind of prefer it that way, as I feel like I get a more sonic experience from listening to Rammstein, or any non-English speaking band, for that matter.

And now Imagine, you'd actually could understand, what they're saying, it is just more beatiful. I can understand, that it can be hard to learn another language, especially german, but it is worth it. I, as a german mothertongue speaker, had a hardtime when, as a kid, I couldn't speak english and didn't understood it and rather "sung along" with made up vowels, when I heard english lyrics. But I'm happy that in time, mainly due to watching favorite TV shows and playing favorite games in english but of cause also with the help of the school lessons in that subject, learned the language, so I can understand and speak English myself and actually understand, what english speaking bands are singing and sing along properly :D

As an American, my view on Till's lyrics is that they're simple enough for anyone who's taken a basic German course to get the main point of, but also thought-provoking and layered enough to be interesting to more advanced German learners and even native speakers. Musically, they're not the most virtuosic of bands, but I (and this is just my opinion) believe they use dynamics very well and are very good at creating atmosphere and filling a space with their sound.

And I think that 5th reason is WHY Till rolls his Rs. Because he knows many will listen that don't understand German, and so he uses his voice like an instrument, doing things that we non-native speakers will find interesting or catchy.

Deven Science I don’t speak a lick of German but I love listening to their music and I sing along in German. I look at the lyrics in German and English so I know what the song is about. I can’t roll my Rs when singing but I try! I like how it sounds actually and it is distinctive.

I wouldn't think so. He always rolled the R's, even in the early days, and as a German band, making music in German in the late 80's/early 90's it was extremely unlikely they would ever become known outside of Germany.

Great video! I had Rammstein's 2nd album when it came out and didn't have internet to look up translations. They're music rocked hard and the lyrics (even though I didn't know them) fit well with the music. I like Till's style in delivery and how poetic some songs are. I'm also very proud of them for singing about topics that are somewhat taboo /forgotten/ swept under the rug. This makes the music more real on a whole other level. Rammstein is my favorite band as I have been listening to them for about 15 years. Never let down by anything that they produce. Always look forward to more! Thanks Dave, those were 5 facts I didn't know about. Much love!

I absolutely love that you mentioned the idea that understanding the meaning of the lyrics of their songs contributes to the "icing" on the German cake. Haha! I agree with you wholeheartedly. I fell in love with German in high school and then changed my entire college career after a year to studying German because of the shaking their music did to my soul. That was years ago and I still listen to Rammstein and I still find new things in the language, the lyrics, the meaning that go far beyond just the electrifying sound. But it started with the sound, and the "icing" I've had has been oh so delicious.

I'm an Afrikaans speaking boertjie who knows no German, but some German words are very close to Afrikaans, so here and there one can make sense of what the songs are about. I do like the rolling R in German because it is the same rolling R that we use in Afrikaans, and it works very well. One funny as hell fact is, the way that you roll that R's in English at specific time lapses is the very first give-away that someone who is speaking English is actaully a raw Afrikaans speaking person 🤣🤣 But I'm very rarely into songs for the lyrics and their meanings when it comes to metal, I purely enjoy the guitars and the big thick riffs. With Rammstein you get the added bonus of Till's voice and the way German sound

Interesting video, I didn't know about the process behind writing music and lyrics. I've been listening to Rammstein since 1997 (I think, maybe even earlier), and their music really helped me learning German as a second foreign language at high school. While I'm not really good at spoken German as I lack regular speaking opportunities, I can read or listen without too many problems. Also thanks to them (and having access to mostly German cable music stations while I was young) I found a lot of other German bands I would discover probably 10+ years later.

What I've noticed is that most of the time, especially in Reise Reise album Till used a lot of words that can be easily guessed or understood by english speakers and he places them very strategically, for example in song mutter or sonne, most people can guess that this song is about a mother or the sun and there are plenty more clues in the lyrics and in the music itself. Probably being able to understand the big general theme of the song, but not understanding the detail makes it a lot more intiguing for people.

Well, you have to admit ….. Rein Raus is pretty obvious too what it's about. And I love the melodies behind the stumpf und monoton. It's almost classical, like Sonne, Alter Mann, Amour, Nebel, Ohne Dich, Du riechst so gut and more. And Los is awesome, lyrics wise, because of the double meaning of Los as in "(here we) go", "less" or "without". A funny play with German language. The poet that is Lindemann really stands out in this. In English, not so much. As they say, they sing about "Liebe in alle Formen und Varianten". Rammstein to me is therapy, live and on record.

Isn't the part of mein teil slightly different? I believe it wasn't his lover he killed, but a guy who posted an advert that he wanted to be killed an eaten? They cut of his 'teil' and ate it together before he killed the person

I didn't inform myself that well but another KZbin comment said that he accidentally burned "sein Teil" and fed it to the dogs... I don't know anymore what's right, so many different opinions/information🤷

They met eachother on the cannibal forum. They talked about cannibalism and they decided to do it. One man got his weiner cut off and they tried to eat it but they failed because they cooked it for to long. This was the wish of the man btw he allowed to be eaten if he could try his own weiner. After that the man was killed and eaten by the other man.

@@catsaregreat768 that's the same story I heard except no one died, that's why the cannibal didn't go to jail. I heard about it on one of Simon Whistler's channels

I don't understand a word of German but Rammstein is my favorite band and I love every album. To me it's all about the beat, the sounds of the words (as I don't understand them) and how they flow with the music and the way each song has it's own feel, personality and emotion to it...It's almost a subconcious feel to it... They rarely come to North America, so I was only oble to see them once, but it was in a sports arena (Montreal) and it was the best most unbelieveable show I have ever seen. , the concert was like a dark Broadway production! They are epic artists in every sense of the word. The latest CD is also so good! I have it in the car on a permanent basis and have listened to it at least 100 times...so far...

Great video! I did not know they named the band after the air show. Which coincidentally I was actually there when my father was in the US Air Force. I can remember being so close to the accident and how bad it was. Keep up the good work.

I just thought that , yes , it was a Swiss sound as we do know that they roll their " Rrr's " harder than we do . Yes . My mother was Bavarian , Father was Nuremberg bred - mother rolled her "Rrr's " more than father and .. he was hard on her for that . When I spent years in Vienna , father sniffed at me and said in a demeaning and funny tone , " You sound like Viennesse " .... Sniff , sniff ! :)))) Loved my Father and his Hoch Deutsch ! I'm a German American lady who adores Germany ! Thanks for your work ! Tschuus !

I am trying to learn my ancestral tongue, My family came from the Hessians hired during the war of '76. I am fascinated with German bands, From Faun to Rammstein and so. I am kind of embarrassed that I am using Duolingo. But I surprise myself when words pop up that i understand the gist of lyrics and also these vids you make help out a lot Dave. Danke
