Rammstein is often doing a play on words which have a double meaning in german. Regarding to this song you can " listen/read " it in two ways. That " Du hast " would mean " You have ". But " Du hasst " ( with two s ) means " You hate ". But only when the whole sentence is sung, you realize the exact meaning. Because only singing " Du has(s)t " can mean both but once that whole sentence is sung: " Du hast mich gefragt... " ( meaning: " You have asked me..." ) the real meaning becomes clear. The false lead comes also by singing and repeating " Du has(s)t mich. " This sentence alone would mean " You hate me ". But following it with " Du hast mich.....gefragt " it changes towards " You have asked me..." -vonStahlmach

I was going to say the same thing about how it's a play on words in German where it switches between you have me or you hate me and that changes the context of the entire line depending on how your listening to it. And that the "you have me" version is also a play on German wedding vows. But really you guys explained it better.

It doesn’t matter your race, ethnicity, culture, geolocation. If you’ve never seen Rammstein live you haven’t seen a performance. Im black, 47 years old, and a head banger for life. Check out some of there other videos. Deutschland, Adieu, and Angst. Their catalog is outstanding. And their lyrics are usually controversial with a sobering truth.

Randomly came across this video today, what a delightful channel! I just wanted to share a little story about Rammstein: I was born in Italy and at the time it was a pretty conservative area so heavy metal fans were few and far between. I visited my American cousin in England in 1999 as he was travelling with his father and he had the Matrix soundtrack on CD, track 5 was Du Hast by Rammstein. I was 12 years old and after being blown away by the first 4 tracks on the CD i cannot describe the rush of adrenaline that overtook me when this song came on, from that day on, i was hooked on Metal. Fast forward a few years, by this point i had moved to England after my parents separated, at this stage i was constantly at odds with my mother, we visited an old dingy record shop called Scorpion Records in High Wycombe and my mum to cheer my up said "pick any CD you like" so of course i ran to the letter R and looked for Rammstein, i picked the album which contained Du Hast, "Sensucht", the cover had a picture of the bands singer Till with forks and spoons binding his face, i calmly walked back to my mum and said "This, i want this" she looked at me as if to say "you're taking the piss right?" and thinking she was going to embarrass me she went to the counter and told the owner "heh, he wants this whatever it is" the owner looked at me, then looked at her and said "A young connoisseur, fine choice" He rang it through the till and handed the record over with a prideful approving smile. We went home and my mum overcome by curiosity ordered me to put the record on the living room HiFi system to which i complied, I tailored the EQ to compliment the aural assault which would ensue and wacked the volume up ,Track 1, Sensucht comes on, i stand with my back to the HiFi to witness her face melt as the first riff of Richard Z's guitar masterpiece is unleashed. And so 24 years later here i am writing about my first experience with Rammstein. I hope you enjoy them as much as i do.

Beautiful. There is nothing like a relation to music that is so raw and powerful that you feel like you are actually metamorphosing during a song. ""The band was named after one of their earliest songs, "Ramstein", written after the air show disaster at the American airbase in Ramstein. According to the band, people started to refer to them as "the band with the 'Ramstein song'" and later as the "Ramstein band"" My friends' dad was working Military Police duty at that air show in 1988. He can barely talk about it. A stunt went wrong and 2 jet airplanes crashed head on, and the giant fireball landed directly on the spectators. 31 dead instantly, another 39 in the days that followed. Hundreds of people went to hospital afterwards for minor injuries. Jet fuel can melt your skin from hundreds of feet away when that much burns at once. The song lyrics paint the picture well. Rammstein A man is burning Rammstein The smell of flesh lies in the air Rammstein A child is dying Rammstein The sun is shining Rammstein A sea of flames Rammstein Blood is coagulating on the asphalt Rammstein Mothers are screaming Rammstein The sun is shining Rammstein A mass grave Rammstein No escape Rammstein No birds are singing anymore Rammstein The sun is shining

This song has such a massive energy to it. The DJ played this song at a "Back to College" party my fraternity threw at a hotel back in 1998. As soon as the intro was over and the first big chords were played the kids went absolutely NUTS! The room had a legal capacity of maybe 200 people and we had about 400 people packed into it. Everyone was jumping and dancing to the song, the heat from the crowd was pouring out of the doors and the walls were literally dripping with condensation from the sweat. And these were kids that had never in their lives heard this song and most don't know a word of German. It just proves that great music transcends language.

Amazing thing is this song is over 25 years old and it still kicks serious butt. I've been following these guys since when this song came out, and they're still releasing crazy stuff to this day. For 50 year old rocker they're still going strong and not producing elevator music. Even better, with a few repetitions my high school German lessons get a workout and I can get a lot of the double entendres in the deliberate German/English subtext. While they never sold out by singing in English like some artists they know English well enough (as most Germans do, they're almost all multilingual) to know how to use t to boost their marketability. Du Hast/Du Hasst is totally a play on words, and uses a similarity between have (as in love/relationship) and hate. Like so many English songs, love and hate are flip sides and intertwine together. It's great in German. It's great if you only speak English, too. But if you speak both, however badly like me, it's awesome. Plus, let's be honest, how many Germans get that good a greeting in Paris after two world wars?

Im a german so i went ahead and translated the lyrics properly: the "du, du hast" part of the song has two "interpretations". First one would be to translate "du hast" to "you have" however it can also mean "du hasst" which translates to "you hate" the pre-chorus: here, the "du hast" is translated to "you have" and the full translation would sound like this: "you, you have, you have me, you have me, you have asked me, you have asked me, you have asked me and I said nothing" the chorus would then be: "do you want until death seperates you be loyal to her for all days?" the female voice is singing "ja" which translates to "yes" so we have "(yes) NO! (yes) NO!" and then that once more the next parts of the song are what i just translated so the only other thing would be in the last chorus: "do you want until death seperates you be loyal to her for all days? (yes) NO! (yes) NO!" and then the "new" part: "do you want until deaths seperation, to love her even on bad days?" and then thats basically it. oh and the last little part: "Willst du bis der Tod euch scheidet Treu ihr seiiiiiiin" translates to "Do you want until death separates you, to be faithfuuuuuuuuuuuuul" edit: and of course the "mich" in the first part "me"

It makes a lot more sense now that I am trying to learn German. People have explained this to me in the past, that the two words sound similar I never quite understood what people meant when they’d say that, I just accepted it. Hate and have. I notice they have other lyrics like that now too. Like I was listening to Stein Um Stein also the other day and I realized why one of the lines is so strange because they wanted to say Ram Stein within the song I should have learned German years ago. This is my favorite band. and I failed at learning French in the past and thought I just sucked generally. It’s not easy to me, your nouns gendered and word order is different. I am not good at languages. I really have to try. I don’t understand certain things (How the heck does Ich mochte mean I would like to?) but I love the way it sounds spoken.

Before going in Stage they rubbed themselves with coffee. And Flake became so nervous that he serched for coming down again. What he found for himhelf was the treadmill. The lightning on the pianist is post production, everything else is real. Edit: Seems that everything is real, including the lightning. But they definitely did some post production on the whole video and enhanced several effects. The difficulty with English lyrics is that that it's a play on the German language: Hassen means "to hate". Haben mean "to have". The second person singular of these verbs is "du hasst" and "du hast". They both sound the same but in the first verse, it's only "Du has(s)t mich", which only makes sense as "You hate me", since "haben" is an auxiliary verb. It needs another verb to make sense and "You hate me" is a complete sentence. In the second verse however, the lyrics change to "Du hast mich gefragt" and with that the meaning shifts from "You hate me" to "You have asked me".

It may be surprising, but Till is a very quiet and shy person off stage. He struggled with stage fright and introduced the pyrotechnics to avert attention from himself. Du (You) Du hast (You have OR you hate) Du hast mich (You have me OR you hate me) Du hast mich gefragt (you have asked me) doch ich hab nichts gesagt (but I have said nothing) Normally it is HE who makes a proposal. Here positions are switched. SHE is proposing, but HE stays silent. Silence could be interpreted as approval so until now everything is sort of open ended. Then comes the kind of wedding vow, which is normally asked by a priest, so perspective is changed from "you" in singular to "you" in plural. Willst du bis der Tod euch scheidet (Do you want, until death will separate you) Treu ihr sein für alle Tage? (be faithful for all days to come) (Ja) Nein Choir: YES, Til: NO Willst du bis zum Tod der Scheide Sie lieben auch in schlechten Tagen? (Do you want until the death of the vagina, love her even in bad days) (Ja) Nein Choir: YES, Til: NO Even if the lyrics are very very short, there are quite some layers in them. Keep up the good work!

I remember watching the music video for “Du Hast”, by Rammstein, on MTV during the 1990s. It was the first time since the time Falco had some hit music videos in the 1980s, that a music video in a foreign language aired on the network without subtitles. It was a fascinating music video, with a surprise (for myself) ending. I highly recommend that you watch the music video at your leisure.

It's a play on words based on the marriage vow. "Du hast mich" means "you have me", but phonetically it's the same as "du hasst mich" (double s) which means "you hate me". As the sentence completes it becomes "you have asked me: do you want to until death does part you, stay faithful?" The female choir goes "jaaaa" but the band shouts "NEIN!" Not one of their deep songs really but it's a little harder to translate because of the plays on words.

Rammstein has always gone above and beyond with their pyrotechnics. The song was first heavily introduced and brought attention in the movie xXx with Van Diesel when he first started getting main rolls. My buddy introduced it to me a year before it was released in the US because he took a vacation in Europe and picked up the CD after hearing it in a Night Club.

I got some information. "Du hast" means "You have" and the lightning are effects from the director of this "concert film" (Jonas Åkerlund who's been doing stuff for HUGE bands for years). I recommend you to get the full tour film literally called "Rammstein: Paris" where this song is performed in. You will see some major crazy stuff from that "concert film" and it's insanely well produced by Jonas. If you just found out about Rammstein you will love this concert film. If you didn't know, Rammstein is very famous for being kinky and provocative bringing sex, toys and bondage into their concerts (and lyrics) which you can find by simple research (google/youtube). "Live aus Berlin" from back in the days is also a super duper nice full concert movie which is neat af. I can also recommend the singer Till Lindemann's solo project (selftitled Lindemann) where he performs some english songs and some german. His concert is also very worth watching (it's very graphic and naughty). Hope this helps. Nice react. And yes, Till Lindemann is a trained pyrotechnic and handles a lot of the pyro engineering going into the concerts himself because of the stage falling a part back in the 90's.

No one comes close to Rammstein's quality, profoundness, humor, social critique, energy, theatrics... First of all, they are the only metal band with a real singer (not a demented screamer), a great singer at that, and they do not adhere to a formula. Let's be honest, most metal is garbage and these guys are gold. They truly expose Metallica as the hyped noise it truly is.

Yes, and because the build up the sentence word by word you're put on the wrong foot. You hear "You hate me", because "You have me" doesn't make any sense. Rammstein are honestly lyrical geniuses. "Du hast mich" means "you have me". But it sounds exactly like "du hasst mich" which means "You hate me". Only with the next sphrases does it become clear what he is singing about. Quick fact: They originally planned on singing in English because they didn't think Americans would be interested in hearing lyrics they couldn't understand. Amerika is a perfect example of this. The song didn't do all that well and they went back to German and never looked back. Been a fan my whole life. I'm 29. Another fun fact: Both Till Lindemann (singer) and his father are both poets. I actually have one of his books translated into English. My dad got it for me for Christmas and I straight up cried. I too am a poet and this guy is my "idol". Yet another fact: They create the melody for a song first and create the lyrics around it. You are right too about Till. He always suffered from stage fright MASSIVELY. Over the years he's gotten much better. That's part of why there is so many wow factors so the crowd would have a reason to NOT look at him. Du (you) hast (have) Ich (me) I've dabbled in German because of this band right here. :D Music videos to watch: Deutschland is incredible. It's the history of Germany! I have the T-shirt too. They do the pyrotech and theatrics also to connect with their non-German speaking fans/audience. That’s why they are so theatrical-like in their shows. They turn each song into like a mini movie that they act out on stage to give their songs more depth and understanding to their fans. Rammstein is huge worldwide so the vast majority of their fans do not speak German. Their non speaking German fans outweighs their German fluent fans greatly.

True. But nothing beats a Rammstein concert with German fans all around you. They sing every-single-word Tills sings. And he had /has a habit of changing the words slightly when performing for the 'home crowd'. It always adds new depth and the crowd goes mental when he does that! And (nearly) all Rammstein songs relate to something 'German': Berthold Brecht (e.g. 'Armee'), a German children's song (Hoppe, hoppe, Reiter) and even a children's tv show turned into a nightmare (Mein Herz Brennt)...

Having been raised bilingually by a German mother, my first listen of this song (way back when) was that much more mind-bending. One of the most fascinating parts of this song is the wordplay between the words "hast" (which is the past tense of "to have") and the word "haßt" (which is pronounced similarly, just with the "sharp S", but is the present tense of "to hate"), So he's saying "You have, You have, You hate me, You have me asked" ("gefragt" is the past tense of "to ask", and Germans put the verb after direct object). In everyday usage, "hast" and "haßt" can really only be distinguished by context, because they sound nearly identical when spoken. It is wordplay on the level of Shakespeare or Wilhelm Busch.

Please don't confuse people, the ß in "haßt" is only used by turboboomers, it's usually just a double s. The letter itself lost its use in many cases back in 1996 and got replaced by "ss" instead. A mostly applicable rule is: After a long vowel like the "a" in Straße you use it but after a short one like the "a" in hasst/hast you don't.

On their first album was a song called Rammstein the is about this accident. Edit: they have multiple videos that got banned from playing on MTV because of the offensive content. Another must watch is 'Mein Teil' which was inspired by the german cannibal Armin Meiwes.
