Try adding your pinky to make it C/G, then slide up and down. Still works. You need to slide to the correct frets as well, but easy enough to figure out what works and what doesn't.

C - Em9/D - G6 (or Em7/G) I feel like inversions are often overlooked when considering what to call certain chords. Even though most times inversions are their own chord with a unique sound from other inversions just based on how you voice it. I also think voicing is more important than anything when it comes to theoretical chords. At least we can all agree music is pretty sweet despite theory

Im a self taught guitarist been playing for almost 20 years and this is one of my staples in my playing. I didn't even know it was called chord parallels lol.....I do this with E,C,A and D chords predominately progressing up and down the fret board to create rhythms and melodies

I play this way as well. It works great with power cords too!! ie. Slowly pick out E Power cord on the 7th frett, Then slide to the 5th frett, and pick just the first two strings of the E power cord and strum the rest. It sounds great and you can go anywhere from there 👍🎸

You could put that pinky down on the third fret and move it that way as well or lift your index finger and let that b string ring out for a Maj7 sound.

As a classical guitarist (who’s been playing for nearly ten years) I use the fingerpicking technique rather than a pick, however, I was always taught to avoid hooking your thumb over the neck in order to avoid carpal tunnel because that puts a lot of strain on the tendons in your forearm. Regardless, I really appreciate this. I didn’t know about chord parallels before.

The open D chord also works well for this. You can move it 3 or 5 frets higher and it sounds great.

Yes because you are exactly playing the MAJOR scale. ALL the major scale is, is a pattern of 1.2.34 Dots are steps. Afer 4 skip a step and repeat. That is all it is. Every string up and down. Try it on the low E only starting at F. Sing Do Re MI Fa So La Ti and back to DO. Notice the intervals. That is why it works with open D so well. It is also in Zeppelin Over the Hills and Far Away. Also, Even Flow, Loser- Beck, and about 40 more popular tunes.

I learned this 30 years ago and what’s the real key to it all is all cowbody chord shapes can be moved anywhere some strings muted or droned maybe but it shows people more about the guitar neck and some basic understand good video to put out there👍

Throw your pinky finger on the high e to make the 5th (same fret as the ring finger), and you have even more options, like the Eflat chord, or anything that doesn’t clash with a G.

The chord shape with the open G string from the intro to Castles Made of Sand works the same way. The song actually starts and ends by sliding the shape up and down the fretboard.

You can do this with most chords, the F and D also work this way. The F one is used for Pinball Wizard this way, the D for Zeppelin's Over the Hills and Far Away before the Chorus.

Not really actually... it is on a basic patern but for exemple on the D there is still an open G wich is an 11th or sus4 and an open E wich would be a 9th. So as you can tell on the video he only does the C D F chords wich is C normal D sus9, F 9th M7. You can place the chord wherever you want and it works with all chords, just now that the open strings in it will add tension or relief and you need to check those out to know what you're doing.

@@michaelsmusic3532 then yes your third finger will indicate the root same as in the C chord. Unless you want it to be an inversion of another chord and then your third finger will be a third, fifth or whatever. For exemple if you play an A minor 7 on the beggining of the neck and want it to have a bass in C you will have the basic C chord so you can think it as Am/C but it depends on the context you're in and where you wanna go.

This is just logic You play a C Major then move to a D Major. Surely as you are still in the C Major range, all the rest of the notes will sound great (D, E, F, etc). That is basic harmony.
