Did you know your watercolors have magical powers? How is this possible you ask? But it’s true. Every watercolor holds inside it very special properties that can be unlocked if you take the time to learn them. This is a video about just that as I take you into the world of watercolors, pigments and exactly what it in those tubes of paint you have lying on your desk. Hope you enjoy!

ABOUT ME
Hi! My name is Margot and I am a professional artist and graphic designer. My parents like to joke that I was born with a paintbrush in hand. I started my career after graduating from the renown Parsons School of Design in New York City and spent over 15 years creating and designing for many of the world's top Fortune 500 brands and companies. My painting journey started as a side project and a creative outlet for me to step away from the computer, go back to my "roots" in fine art and to hone my skills as an illustrator and painter. I started posting some of my work on instagram and the rest is history. My work is inspired by all the things that I am passionate about. Ballet, travel, graphic design, color and finding a world of beauty in all facets of everyday life. I hope you'll join me in this KZbin journey as I take you through all the tips, tricks and trade secrets I've gathered throughout the years. I hope I can teach you some of what I know, help you discover your creative voice and I hope you enjoy this Channel!

Thank you for this video. As a professional artist and teacher i taught pigment basics. Most students just drifted off into dreamland and thought i was being my normal overly obsessive self who was just too fussy. But for me learning about pigments was so exciting and made such a difference in purchasing paints and mixing colors. I just love this subject. 🎨

Now I'm growing into learning the codes, instead of just messing around. Like learning music... You first learn basic rhythm by playing games.. then when you start to get serious, you learn notes. Then when you're really serious, you start studying the circle of fifths... That's where I'm going. I want to know these technical things... One day, I want to become a painter of light... That's my big lofty goal!!!

Wow, I really enjoyed learning all these aspects about watercolor... although I've used watercolor both as a hobby and professionally for years, it's mainly been as a "naive user," just using paints I know I like for various reasons! This has been a wonderful "class" of getting to know the details behind their make-up. Thanks so much for a thorough and entertaining description! I look forward to checking out your other videos on the topic!

Best ever explanation of watercolor pigments, well done 👏 🎉 I followed you through the whole video!! But if it had been my first day of watercolor I might feel like ok good to know but who cares let's paint something...lol! 😊 Now I can't get enough of learning all the color info. I'm working on finding my favorite sap green formula. So far I like viridian/phthalo green, cad yellow/gamboage, and cad red. I actually don't have the exact pigment number as these are from the Mei liang pretty excellent palette, which is Paul rubens student grade watercolor set but I'm working on figuring it out. Thanks for sharing. This was a great wealth of information!

Great video, personally I avoid cadmiums, cobalts, manganese, and rare pigments or fugitive ones. Mainly due to safety but also those are more expensive. It saves me money by preventing me from buying too many tubes and handmade paints.

learning pigments of our paints is very important to help you find that color you love so much in a brand that doesn't always use the common name for that color you want. it saves lots of money especially when your buying tubes. the same is true in learning which pigments use dye & those which lift easily, idk about you all but wasting money on paint i don't want or don't even like is not my thing so it's well worth pushing myself to learn these things. tfs! have a wonderful life!

I would argue any color you love. Even though you can mix something similar you may run out and need to mix more. Or you mix too much and waste paint. Why not just buy the colors you love. You can still play with mixing. I recently curated a single pigment palette for when I feel like playing with mixing. You can have it all! ☺️

This was amazing! I wish I would have had the opportunity to watch this 3 years ago, when I started with watercolour. Gosh, I paid so much money for paint I didn’t understand, but thought I would need…. But as this all is an ongoing process and as I needed to know what subject matter I would like to paint (yay, even that matters when putting together a palette, nothing I knew) I think it was okay like it was. I made SO many mistakes. But I learned a lot along the way. Now I know my paints. I have a full book with swatches and all the pigment information beside, plus glazing and lifting. And this was so time consuming, but so rewarding. Recommend that to everyone. And definitely this video would have helped me out a lot in my beginnings! So nice. Entertaining and full of information. Loved it, thank you!
