Right but a metaphor doesn't suddenly make a bad choice ok. It's a good metaphor but still at the end of the day the bad choice is still a bad choice. If you wanna make it that's fine but you should also know what it is you are doing before you make that decision.

I feel like Aaron Eckhart is incredibly underrated. Albeit, he hasn't necessarily been in a ton of great movies recently (with the exception of The Dark Knight and this incredible gem) but that's not to say he can't act. +SkullBoySnafu You nailed it. The argument is two sides of the same coin. On one side, it's known that it's not a good idea to use/consume things your body does not need to be healthy, on the other side there are other things that people consume almost on a daily basis that is not needed yet we accept anyway without question. It's interesting to me to see some people take such a strong stance against something and ignore most other things, i.e. anti smokers. My schools had posters everywhere about the dangers of smoking and pretty much said if you smoke your life is fucked. What's funny about this is I'm from South Dakota. There's alcoholics everywhere. Most kids I went to school with had their first beer when they were 8 or 9 years old and their parents would start buying them alcohol when they made it to high school. I'm not joking. I can't even count how many times I overheard, "My dad's buying us beer for tonight," in the halls. When I went to friends houses, I would be offered alcohol like it was no problem. When I was working at Walmart, I saw tons of people come through with alcohol daily. Some of them were people I grew up around. My old teachers from elementary-high school, class mate's parents, day care workers, even local nutritionists that visited my schools. And it wasn't like I saw them every month or so, it was every week they would come in for it. It was the same people I was selling a case or 2 a week of beer or other alcohol. FOR 2 YEARS! All that said, I love it when I see others take such a strong stance against anything here in SD. Smoking anything is bad for you! You should stop now! (Drinks like a fish) Eating fast food is bad for you! You should eat better and cook your own meals (Buys boxed food and drinks) Soda is terrible for you! (Drinks alcohol) The youth here are lazy and spend too much time on their devices! (Spends all day watching t.v., cuts extracurricular courses in schools, makes no effort to fund things young people would like, and drinks alcohol every day to unwind) Everyone's a hypocrite.

+Creo -Tan Which sounds pretty good, but how many things really fall into that? You can say smoking should be fine under that....until you have people who require medical attention and are using up public resources because of their lifestyle. Or those who do reckless activities that risk their lives and require funds and rescue crews. People very rarely live in a bubble. And you can't know before starting a risky activity (like drinking) whether there will be a negative consequence. Now of course if the argument is that you pay for any potential consequences your actions have on others that's fine.

Saying that the Senator is a "villain" is silly. Antagonist, sure, but not villain which just implies "bad guy." The movie is really funny and well made but you shouldn't sell it in such a way that makes it seem like it wants to shock you. A lot of Nick's character is just saying "it is my job"; he even gives credits to the scientists who work in the tobacco industry as geniuses because "they have been testing the link of tobacco and cancer for years and have found no results; they could disprove gravity." I see a lot of Nick's character as the guy that would go from leading healthcare reform to suddenly being a lobbyist for "Make People Sick Foundation" just because "well, it is my job." And with the ending, I could never decide if it was "well, it is my son's choice if he wants to smoke when he is an adult" or Nick truly choosing his work over his son. Still, GREAT movie.

That's how lobbyists and tobacco executives have framed the argument for decades since the negative effects of tobacco use became prominent: a matter of choice that would be harmful if restricted: "We hear about the addiction and the threat. If cigarettes are too dangerous to be sold, then ban them. Some smokers will obey the law, but many will not. People will be selling cigarettes out of the trunks of cars, cigarettes made by who knows who, made of who knows what." - James W. Johnston, Chief Executive, R.J. Reynolds in a 1994 interview

This review reminds me alot of the new "diet charts" that have come out recently, saying basically that beef and butter are THE bad food of this time now. 10 years ago it was fat food, then it was pastas and bread, and now it's this, saying it increases chance for cancer. Some people go wild over it, having enjoyed it for years but now avoid it like it's demonspawn. I'm personally not gonna change my diet drastically because a chart says it, tho I won't ignore it completely ofcourse. But increased chance is so slim. It's like saying sniffing grass can cause cancer. ANYTHING can cause cancer to a certain degree, only some are much worse than the other. Even if I were to change my diet into something much less favorable, and sacrifise more and more things I enjoy, I could still just as easily get some different incurable disease and endup not having enjoyed life as much as i could. (That doesn't mean I WON'T be carefull of what I eat or do, but I won't let the news just dictate what's right and wrong in such detail and make my own decision.)

Many, many years ago I attempted a college ethics class. The teacher was... biased. Up her own ass. Enjoying her sense of righteousness. One of the projects we had was essentially choosing and reviewing a controversial movie and talking about the ethical implications of the message of said movie. The movie came from a list she drew up. She brought up this very movie, but I guess heard it as "Thank you for NOT Smoking" instead of the actual title. I piped up and corrected her, and when she heard the title, she promptly crossed it off her list. I still think about that moment as the moment when I realized her hypocrisy and sheer capacity for bullshit. She essentially (mis)heard the title and thought it was about something she agreed with, and then when she heard it wasn't, immediately changed her mind. To me, this says quite clearly that she, and I can only imagine there are others like her, doesn't care too much about the content or message of a movie, as long as its stance agrees with hers. If I'd seen the movie beforehand and actually knew what its message was, I would have defended it. If I had more of a spine, I would have reviewed this awesome movie regardless of what she thought of it. It's the kind of movie that, now more than ever, needs to be seen and talked about. Because "politically correct" sometimes isn't actually correct.

Meh,maybe she thought it was merely a propaganda film by the tobacco industry? I mean there's controversial films and there's just blatant propaganda such as let's say "birth of a nation".Big tobacco surprising still make propaganda videos that's only intention is too spread misinformation about their product in the places that don't have laws making them disclose what the consequence of their product are. Hell look at how some of them do business with Indonesia where they actively promote tobacco as "medicine" or actively push it on kids. I mean it's one thing to fight for the right of a legal adult to choose to smoke knowing the health risks but it's another thing all together to actively lie to your consumers and kids about the effects of your product. This movie seems to me have been glorifying the lying of industries do to sell their deadly product and in my mind the protagonist being" likeable" doesn't really make his actions and lies any less deplorable than if he was a mustache twirling classical bad guy.Though this is only my impression from what Dough showed in the video so I'll have to watch whole movie to get a completely accurate picture of it.

What if you knew the man was a murdering pedophile and couldn't prove it in the court of law but had the means to murder him without getting caught? Peddling cancer sticks are in my mind a dark area especially when you're trying to convince people your product won't have any negative effects on them. It's fraud and if you don't think so please the following situation; a man is selling lemonade with poison in it and says his lemonade is perfectly fine to his costumes. Should that man not be punished?
@servoaugusta513

Because there's a consequence to the seller if he doesn't tell his costumer about the poison. Hey I'm all for legalizing drugs for consenting adults but in my mi d it's the responsibility of the seller to divulge all the nessary information of his product to his consumers.

Being allowed to make choices is good.. but we can't fool ourselves. Not all choices are equal. And not all choices made by the public are done with enough education or information on the consequences. Lies in media don't make the choice to smoke (or anything else we known to be bad for us) a good one by virtue of how well the media argues. I'm all for freedom, but I'm also in favor of fair boundaries. Companies that knowingly sell something that has an understood negative effect on your health or life shouldn't be allowed to down play, ignore or lie about those effects. And we're letting them do that right now, giving more value to money than human life or well being. I get it, it's smart and interesting and unusual. But a the end of the day, that kind of twisting of reality is still intentionally harmful no matter how you slice it. And I just can't respect or allow it without speaking, voting or working against it.

We live in an age where information is prevalent and you can research whatever you want, where anti-smoking ads air all of the time, where schools preach all the time that smoking is bad, and we are surrounded by people that remind us that smoking is bad. On top of that, much of this is the role of parents, anyway. Don't get me wrong, I don't smoke and never want to see any of my friends or loved ones smoke, but we live in an age where information, debates, so on and so forth are everywhere. If we took your point of view and ran with it the level of justification for what I like to call totalitarian stupidity would skyrocket. "McDonalds is unhealthy? We need to do something!" I'm sorry, but if you don't know that McDonalds isn't healthy by the time you are an adult, that's NOT on the company. "Watching too much TV is bad, so all TVs must now have timers that shut them off after three hours." You give the devil an inch, he'll take a mile. Freedom IMPLIES the possibility failure. There is no freedom without room for failure. And the fact of the matter is that with freedom comes the necessity of responsibility and freedom to fail. There is no other kind of freedom on this earth. Not to mention, the more you enforce a nanny state on people, the lazier they get. When more medical-based laws get passed, charity drops. When the social security act was passed, savings dropped dramatically. The more power was given to the board of ed and the longer the amount of years one had to spend in school (we didn't always have the ludicrous 12 grade system), the more parents decided things were the school's job to teach (such as reading), the less they believed they were responsible. The more you nanny people, the more people become accustomed to being taken care of, and the more they decide not to take responsibility for their own actions or to personally help others.

ZerogunRivale We're also in a world where there are people who honestly think vaccines cause autism, climate change isn't real, demons cause mental illness and creation is how the universe was made. So.. yeah, still a lot of ignorance rolling around to even suggest all choices are equal. I'm not calling a totalitarian regime or 'nanny state', no matter what you want to suggest. But humans on average, by their nature, make shitty decisions when all bets are off and the restrictions are down. What I would like a requirement for businesses to be frank about their product. Why do they fight so much against cancer warnings? Because when people are faced with the reality of the choice to smoke, they don't smoke as much and don't pick up the habit as often. Because informed decision making is smarter than running around willy nilly in a pseudo anarchist state of mind. If you want real choice, real freedom, you're going to have to also support putting all the correct information on the box/tag/label. Real free of choice comes with informed decision making, anything less relies on false advertising and childish thinking.
@ZerogunRivale
@ZerogunRivale 8 жыл бұрын
You simply put, have no idea what freedom is and don't realize how far down the concept of totalitarian ideas you are. Real freedom is not forcing people to put the correct information on the box. Freedom requires personal responsibility. Anything other than that is not real freedom. The idea that people need to have some kind of "perfect information" doesn't negate the fact with freedom comes danger and comes the responsibility to educate oneself. Not to mention, your logic doesn't work. If you want to argue you believe in limited freedom, fine. But if you're going to start using the term "real freedom" you better start defining words. Freedom by definition is the state in which one is allowed to do what they choose. No where in there is some disclaimer that says, "unless they are uneducated". As for your first paragraph, so what? Those people have a RIGHT to believe what they want, regardless of whether or not you think they're wrong or right. In fact, you're being ridiculous considering for most people, the facts are much more complex than the pigeon hole you shove them into. Some people believe God created the earth? Some believe he did it over a long period of time, some people believe in Intelligent Design, and some people believe (as strange as it may sound to you) in a strict six day creation story. So what? What right do you have to force them to believe what you want them to, and what does any of that have to do with people having the right to choose? Some people believe the supernatural can effect us, even scientifically? Guess what, it's people's right, and as a Christian myself, it's my right to believe what I choose to, whether you consider that makes me eligible for free choice or not. The same goes for the rest of the basis of your argument. Your idea is basically, "Hey, if people don't believe in the set beliefs that I believe are right, then the world shouldn't be allowed to choose!" What is "free" about that basis in thought to begin with? Again, it's either you admit you believe a portion of society should be controlled (ie. forced to divulge information, etc.) or people should be free. Don't try to throw out terms like "real freedom" without defining how in the world people not living up to what you believe are the ultimate standards of society somehow equates to freedom being the need for force to "educate" them to your liking.

ZerogunRivale Ugh, what are you a libertarian? You're so in love with the idea of balls to the wall freedom you don't realize that moderation and middle roads are the key to our survival. I am in favor of people making their own choices, but how much of it is a real choice if they don't have all the information? Say you have a choice between A and B, is it real freedom if you're not told about C, or if you're not told that A will eventually give you ball cancer? You go ahead, espouse your 'anything goes' ideals, when you grow up, you'll realize it's not that simple.
@ZerogunRivale
@ZerogunRivale 8 жыл бұрын
TheStoneSpiral Yes, I am a libertarian. And your A, B, C choice isn't a logical argument. What is A, B, and C? What are we talking about here? Are A, B, and C supposed to be different kinds of foods, different kinds of recreational drugs, or what? Unless you plant specifics, the example doesn't work. If they're foods, then it is my responsibility to understand what i'm eating. If they're drugs, then it's my responsibility to know what they might be doing to me. Considering we live in an ultra-safe society where people are always telling you what is and isn't good for you, there is even more freedom to be free in our day and age because information is so prevalent and easy to come by. ***** You're misunderstanding my argument and I suggest a look at Murray Rothbard's "The Ethics of Liberty". Liberty is related to natural rights. Once you violate someone else's personal rights, then you are violating their liberty. You said this and it fits in perfectly with the concept of liberty and natural rights. I never said that "real freedom" was the freedom to infringe on someone else's rights. NOWHERE in my above posts did I say that. I merely said that people have the freedom to choose. Once you violate someone else's rights, you are violating their freedom. That does not contradict the concept of "real freedom". In fact, it's perfectly in line with it. What you define as "limited freedom" is "real freedom". Your point contradicts none of my earlier points philosophically. In short, violating someone's else's freedom doesn't equate to "limited freedom", it equates to a defense of freedom because you're arguing for someone else's rights. (I understand I may not have worded myself properly, so hopefully I've come across well enough) To cover your examples, let's go with the second one first since it's easier. When you behead someone, you are violating their freedom/natural rights, therefore, you should be punished for doing so. That's perfectly in line with freedom. Again, I never made the argument for people purging each other in my earlier posts. In fact, i'm not sure how my argument against people being nannied somehow equates with my somehow arguing for people having a right to murder. Murder is anti-liberty because it violates someone else's rights. Your first example with the vaccination is pretty much in the same boat. If you are carrying a disease that is KNOWN to kill people, then by law, you should have to vaccinate in that case. If you don't, then you are a murderer, and a violator of people's freedoms, and thus, anti-freedom. Again, I never argued that "real freedom" was the freedom to violate someone else's rights. Also, it should be noted that blanket statements never work and everything should be evaluated on a specific basis. McDonalds can cause you bodily harm? It is you, the individual, who are shelling out money for that food. No one is forcing you. Therefore it is YOUR responsibility to educate yourself on whether or not it's healthy. Someone has contracted some kind of airborne disease that can kill people? Then for them to be in public is the same as being a murderer and something needs to be done about them. Again, everything needs to be evaluated situation by situation according to concept of rights.

YumLemmingKebabs IT's not the item itself, or lets call it material that lacks value, its the person's perspective on it that grants it no value, a person that gets used to cig while stressed will use it as a method to escape a stressful event/situation. A person who didnt need cig to do that in the first place, will see no value in it at all. But even taht person could get used to it, if he gets rid of his bias towards it, lets say he ignores that its unhealthy, and begins to do cig once every morning to start his day, chilling at his table doing nothing just smoking it, it would eventually become a strong habit he requires to start his day, same thing people do with coffe and other materials. What we really miss isnt the material itself but the "DOING". We want to feel like we actually do something useful, its quite rare that a person actually misses the taste of chocolate or so, its more like you are reminded of that you msis it, you could go on livign without it if you werent reminded of it by something. :F

Nostalgia Critic didn't really do this great film justice. I grew up in North Carolina and we actually took a school field trip to the RJ Reynolds plant in Winston-Salem. Let that sink in. A SCHOOL FIELD TRIP to a TOBACCO PLANT. But this dude in the movie, Nick Naylor, was exactly like the dude that ran the field trip. Never apologizing for our shying away from the truth of his product and, for better or worse, it was his enthusiasm for tobacco that partially got me to lighten up on smoking and smokers. Probably helped convince me too start smoking too, but I didn't start till I was 23 so I was definitely not underage like most smokers who start as teens. But I think that choice is the most important part of democracy and freedom and that's why I'm for legalizing most drugs. If you don't have the freedom to do to your own body as you wish, then in my mind, you're not truly free.

Same with cigarettes, they put nicotine in there to make you addicted to them, they sell flavored cigarettes to make it enjoyable for people who got a more sweet taste like women or teenagers, they advertise and buy product placements, bribe politicians, influence regulations etc. The problem is not that people are dumb or want their free choice to smoke and do things that are unhealthy, the problem is that firms deliberately do everything to make you buy their product no matter how harmful it is just for profit.

I simply loved "Thank You For Smoking," precisely because of the moral ambiguities it portrays so expertly. There is no straw-man constructions of any view-point, and everything is handled so maturely one would think it undermines the film's comedic presence. Somehow, it not only doesn't, but in being all-too realistic it actually makes it more humorous. Not enough good things can be said about the cast and the performances they brought to the film... Which is why I'm surprised you didn't say more about any of them... I can only assume you're preoccupied with... other things. *insert ominous laughter here*

Actually, South Park did a similar take on this issue in the episode "Butt Out." The Tobacco companies there know of the risks of smoking but try to promote it as a choice for the consumer to make on their own rather than force it on them. The anti-Tobacco companies however are more insidious because they push so hard with dirty tricks and propaganda aimed at showing how bad smoking is yet silence people who prefer to smoke based on choice. Plus the character of Rob Reiner in South Park and Senator Finistirre in TYFS are similar since they promote obesity (Rob is always eating in the episode and the Senator is from Vermont and constantly advertises the Cheese industry)

I guess you don't know the history of Tobacco companies and their efforts to silence their own Scientists, along with the bold-faced way that they have lied, falsified and distorted and have resorted to lying propaganda. They are right now deliberately lying and spreading lies in the third world in order to sell their product. In the past Tobacco companies have supressed their own knowledge of the dangers of smoking, along with spreading lying propaganda. Tobacco companies in the past made it clear that they wanted uniformed, ignorant consumers who would purchase their drug and are looking for a similar market in the third world.As for choice you do realize that smoking is addictive so that after the choice it is less of a choice. Tobacco companies are drug pushers, pushing a dangerous drug for profit.

Ah so the fact that Tobacco companies, have lied, supressed evidence discovered by their own Scientists about the effects of tobacco smoking, and have created campaigns deliberately targeting teenagers is irrelevant. And of course it is irrelevant that they are pushing a drug that is dangerous to your health, and one that is highly addictive and once your addicted the habit is hard to break. So all that is irrelevant. Gotcha!! I suppose you won't have a problem selling crack to 13 year olds. After all it their choice. (I note here that most smokers start before they are legal adults.) The bottom line is that tobacco are drug pushers pushing a dangerous drug, which they know is harmful and deadly. That makes them morally corrupt.

Not to mention, the education system is mostly flawed and we are made to learn a lot of things that we don't even have to learn for our own benefits. Even in high school you are still made to learn OP English in most western countries just to get into UNI or college and it's stupidly hard and unnecessary for most. I mean, why would I need to understand poetic devices if I wanted to become an Engineer, an architect, a scientist etc.?

There is the department for English, history, science etc. A lot of that stuff could be useless to students who truly know what they want to do if what they want to do does not involve some of/all of the above. Today, a women was trying to talk "Inspiration" into us by shouting into the microphone and it got me thinking a bit. She stressed about the high suicide rate but the thing is, speaking "Inspiration" into people and forcing them to go with a flow that they are struggling to go with (in this instance the education system) is NOT going to make those with suicidal tendencies any less suicidal. Making the curriculum more open and less forced will ease stress and make the suicide rate of teenagers less.

I'd argue it shouldn't be. Art feeds the soul, it is something that elevates you as a human being, something that makes you wiser, something the state has an obligation to give to its future citizens. Because schools do not view making workers, or architects , or eingineers as their first priority, they see creating intelligent and wise citizens as their first priority. But, on the other hand, the way it is taught is often boring and counterproductive, and doesn't manage to achieve this due to the bad methods used.

masterxehanort3 Most of your points are understandable. I myself want to be an architect but I do not think everyone should be forced to learn art. Yes, they should be encouraged with enthusiasm, but not forced. The CEO of McLaren stated in a quote after being asked if it's important to engage more with young students "..Everyone should play a part in engineering." He should have instead said "Everyone should be *encouraged* to play a part in engineering."

Eh, _Thank You for Smoking_ is *not* shocking, as far as I'm concerned. It's just _morally grey_. That's a good thing, of course, and something I want more of (despite knowing how hard it is to pull off), but..I wouldn't call it "shocking". It's smart. It's sharp. It's brutal. Not shocking, though.

***** Hmm no..that's called taking *risks*. Not necessarily "shocking". Personally, I see all of that (the stuff you said about going against the norm) as simply..doing new things and going certain places other movies are hesitant of going. I'd call it _brave_. It's a movie taking risks. (Something that most movies should try to attempt but won't cos it takes a lot of effort & skill to pull off) I mean, Marvel's _The Avengers_ was a huge risk (at the time) and was incredibly brave to do what it did. You wouldn't call _that_ movie "shocking", would you?
@paradoxacres1063
@paradoxacres1063 8 жыл бұрын
***** Disagreed. _Game of Thrones_ burning a little girl alive is "shocking". What you're talking about is "surprising". Hollywood taking risks can't be "shocking" as that's what they should be doing. It's more a..welcome surprise. It's brave and is closer to the "truth" of reality (that the world is not Black & White, it's shades of Grey), and..nowhere near as uncomfortable to watch as it is when you're watching something that's truly "shocking". "Something out of the ordinary" is surprising. "Shocking" is when you shove something that's _taboo_ in the audience's face. That's how I see it, at least.

+Paradox Acres Game of Thrones actually does shock some people, but for surprisingly lesser reasons.The Mary Sue wrote an entire article declaring that it will no longer promote or write recaps of the show on the basis that one of their favorite characters got raped. They accused the show of having too many rape scenes and tried to frame their offended sensibilities as a moral stance that needed to be taken.There are tons of people who think Game of Thrones is sexist for having terrible things happening to the female characters. I think there definitely is a PC culture that finds Game of Thrones shocking, but it's (thankfully) not strong enough to convince HBO to pull the show. The real problem with culture and political correctness is that we're willing to entertain, humor, and occasionally validate these opinions without calling them out on it or questioning them as thoroughly as we should. We're willing to mock ideologies that are just absurd, but we mostly murmur quietly when political correctness gets involved.There are various reasons for this, but I think one of the biggest ones is that we all kind of agree with political correctness on some level of severity. We all want to be kind to people and treat the traditionally belittled, persecuted, and malcontent in society with a little bit of sympathy; so we're willing to put up with the irritating extremes of an ideology who's basic platform is doing exactly that, even when they focus most of their attention on the cosmetic issues of society rather than the underlying and ingrained ones. We don't want to get on their bad side because we associate that with becoming the very bigots we want to oppose.I'm sorry for the long winded rant. I don't have any assumptions about your political beliefs, I just felt the need to write this all down because I didn't know how to end this comment and I felt like I was on a roll here.

oh and one more thing before I leave this comment section. I have absolutely no problem with people smoking, except for this: Smoking anywhere outside your house (assuming no people or animals are in there with you, and it doesnt leave your house) takes the choice away from other people whether to smoke or not, since their smoke moves away and gets into other people's lungs, people that don't want it there. Even vaping still has nicotine in it, and breathing in someone's vape will still get that nicotine in your body (granted its a lot less filled with extra crap, but nicotine itself isnt healthy either). If someone invents a way to smoke that does not affect anyone but yourself then makes that the only way its allowed to be done, I will have no problem at all with smokers anywhere, as long as they give their kids the choice still. This is why I have a problem with smoking but not with high-fat fastfood. I've probably smoked several packs of cigarettes just by having to walk through other people's smoke, sitting in a room where someone starts to smoke before I notice them doing so, etc etc. Yet I've never gotten fat, obese OR gotten a heartattack from walking by someone eating an XL big mac.

+IvaintheMCbuilder Yeah, the cheese analogy kind of falls flat at that point. The particulates in secondhand smoke make it quite harmful to breathe. On the other hand, secondhand cheese can be unpleasant, but doesn't have nearly the same kind of detrimental long-term effects on peoples' health: It's only deadly when it's silent.
@ivain8704
@ivain8704 8 жыл бұрын
true enough :p. and unlike nicotine, cheese isn't officially addictive (im sure there's people addicted to it somewhere, or products containing cheese, but its not a pattern). Btw, people like the main character of the movie are the reason why products containing physically addictive substances are even legal still. Though I shouldn't talk too much on that, living in a country that is famous for its drugs-tourism (though only for 1 city, really. Which is our capital though).

I was looking for someone to make this point, but the same still applies for junk food. If you eat an unhealthy diet and have a heart attack or stroke, then everyone's tax dollars (at least here in Australia) contribute to your healthcare. I'm not saying whether it is right or wrong but essentially others are made to pay for the poor decisions of others (assuming they are aware of the harmful effects of the food). It also doesn't take into account the animal that has to be killed, the worker who has to kill that animal (PTSD is common in slaughterhouse workers) etc. Very few human actions exist in a vacuum. There are always impacts on third parties and I think it's important that people are considerate of these to create a society that functions well.

As I am watching this video, I am eating fried chicken and french fries. However, an hour ago, I was working out super hard at the gym. During this entire week, I have eaten nothing but healthy, nutritious food. This is my average week, the whole week I am working and eating healthily, but I allow myself 1 day of enjoyment (if you saw me in person, you would say I look pretty darn fit). Fast food, like smoking, may not be good for you. But I believe a good society is not one with nothing but rules and restrictions (we should not ban fast food or smoking). Instead, a good society should be one with an abundance of education, and personal choice. We should educate our children and citizens about what a good, healthy lifestyle is. And then, set them off on their path, and give them the freedom to choose what they want to eat, and what they want to do. The perfect society (one without bad things like fast food or smoking), cannot be achieved and will never be accepted by the people. But if we can provide our citizens with the knowledge of what a healthy life is, and give them the freedom to pursue what they wish, then that, in my opinion, would be a good society.

Choice is good, and is a part of freedom. But smoking tobacco is like putting a gun to your head and saying "I have the choice to pull the trigger if I want to" Yeah, but you'd only be destroying yourself if you did pull the trigger. Everyone in my family has died from cancer - and as the movie says - its greatly due to the way noone taught the dangers to it. The commercials run by big tobacco companies said that smoking would help you live longer and shit like that, Deliberately lying to you to get you to buy their product. That's not freedom. Again, its like putting a gun to your head, someone telling you that bullets don't actually hurt, then telling you that you can choose to pull the trigger or put the gun down.

There was a scene in the movie where Naylor was talking about "moral flexibility". Honestly if ANYONE has good enough debating skills, you can convince or "spin" a good number of people that your viewpoint is the right one. In the video, Doug discusses how Naylor was passionate and creative and charming....which let's face it strengthen his arguments in the movie. "spin" can also be used in other controversial topics as too: abortion, gun control, taxation, etc......

I'm confused now. I thought they clearly made this video to show the protagonist is a bad guy. Yea technically everything he says is correct and I agree people should have a choice, but how he manipulates and uses his debating skills for bad seems obviously evil. I thought they made him look good or neutral just so you'd hate him a little more and for comedic purposes. It also shows how somebody can be 'right' according to the laws of debating while obviously he's speaking on behalf of a company and doesn't give a crap about anything else then his paycheck and how the legal system doesn't promote 'right' but it promotes knowing the rules, because being reasonable isn't nearly as important as following your job description the strictest way possible in this day and age. In my eyes this movie a little dark just to make a point. Are people legitimately offended by this movie? And is that because they misunderstand the movie or did I completely miss the point?

+OJJVZ Just because corruption exists doesn't mean governments should be eliminated. Just because there are terrible corporations doesn't mean capitalism can't work. Just because a religious wingnut espouses derogatory and blatant falsehoods doesn't mean the religion at large is terrible. Just because there are shitty people who are good at manipulating others doesn't mean free choice should be destroyed. It almost seems fitting that the worst person possible should be making the best case here, given the movie's premise. It's like going to a mob boss for the best business advice in a competitive market. Yeah, they'e evil. Al Capone, Lucky Luciano, all of them did terrible reprehensible things. But they engaged in the realest and highest stakes form of doing business, where screwing the pooch in the smallest amount could get you killed, rules barely existed, if at all, and there wasn't such a thing as business ethics. If you survived that type of business, you learned pretty damn quickly how to conduct yourself in a way that had you succeed. Who better to teach the dangers, ethics, and functionalities of manipulation and choice than a corporate shill for a product with an entire graveyard in the closet?

This kinda thing is exactly what I've been seeking all this while. There's just something about this kinda satire that really seeps deep into you, and you start to feel a little dread, a little flustered but ultimately forced to face your thoughts and feelings.

While I don't think there are any benefits of smoking, the film is more on 'do whatever the fuck you want. It's your body.'

If I may: that's kinda the lesson I learned from this movie. When I went off to college, my dad gave me a big box of condoms and said "I'm not judging you; I just don't want to hear any excuses." I used up the pack within my first year, but the message really stuck with me that I shouldn't be ashamed of what I was doing, which really dispersed the shame I'd originally felt, and helped me develop as an adult later on. While the message is crude, I will say that it still has a place in my mind for now and always. Thank you!

The most shocking movie for me growing up was Chicago. First, it was the first movie I watched with a truly evil protagonist, who doesn't change, and gets a happy (ish) ending. Second, I was convinced it was going for the "liar revealed" schtick, which I always hated, but its deliberate subversion served to prove it's meaning, the world is full of corruption. That threw 12 year old me on my way to church camp a curve.

This is one of my all time favorite films! Some really solid points, even the minor characters make you think. Also it has a solid story, It's not a soap box. The movie is just as charming as it's lead character. And, as you point out, it's message is getting more and more relevant with each passing year. Thanks for bringing this up! Gonna have to hang with the MOD squad very soon.
