We all know that this was a season ending “we're out of money” episode - which is really why clip shows exist. However, this episode idea could have been so much better IF 1) it was a sixth or seventh season episode (which would have given way more episodes to draw on), and 2) if they had a little bit more budget, to create some original flashbacks that weren't from episodes - Riker as a child, in the Academy, his first mission and meeting Troi, etc. That would have been an episode I would have liked to have seen.

That is a superb point - this is a crap episode but the core premise could have been better used, especially in a later series with a better wealth of clips to access.

@@Shuttlebay4 Earlier that season, we got "The Icarus Factor" talking about his childhood in Alaska and his relationship with his dad. They could have expounded on that. In S7 we got "The Pegasus" talking about Riker's first assignment. All of these items could have contributed to scenes with younger actors playing him. #MissedOpportunities

It's hilarious that this just popped up in my feed. I introduced my son to next gen recently (we're up to season three now), and we watched this episode last week. In general, a montage episode is lazy writing anyways, but this has to flashback to even worse episodes. "Up the Long Ladder" was one of them. Who wears a sweater that shows off your stomach? Also, who wears a skirt that you can take off, revealing a low-cut skirt underneath it? And the solution at the end? Y'all are just going to have to sleep with each other. Here, we created a breeding program for you.

Well it was an end of season two clip show so the pickings were slim. Like imagine a GOT clip show with nothing but season 8 to use lol.
