Oh Jack, I bloody love you. You are a true petrol head and a nice bloke. You will do what is right by the car and if it means spending a bit more than planned it is worth it to get it to a place you are happy with. Whenever you buy an older car you always spend more than you think on bringing it up to scratch. I bought a lovely MX5 at the beginning of spring, determined I wasn't going to spend a penny on it, keep it for a year and then flog it. £1500 later, a full brake job, new tyres and some bodywork and I am also eyeing up the shocks.......... it is just how we are.

After making this video, Jack arrived home to discover the Influenzo waiting for him on the driveway. According to neighbors, raised voices were heard and apparently dishes were thrown. Some expressions such as "English tart" and "That OTHER car from Norfolk" were heard used. Later on Jack was seen in his pajama pants sleeping on the front steps of his house.

Jack, you are raving about this car's perfectly wonderful, magnificent, best-ever handling. Don't mess with the formula! Install the stock sized tires it was tuned to use. Why would this car need more grip? Who are you racing on public roads? Will it be more fun? Of course not. Resist temptation, sir. Resist! Seeking ever more speed will not improve this car.

Yes, agree totally. Those tyres are an integral part of the chassis and suspension design. Lotus paid those professional qualified engineers good money for a very good reason. 😊

I own a S1 Elise and it's completely stock. I've never understood why people buy a car from a manufacturer that many consider to be the best ride and handling engineers in the world, and then "improve" it... If it needed wider tyres, Lotus would have fitted wider tyres.
@Nogitaman
@Nogitaman 3 жыл бұрын
Agree up to a certain point. If using as intended then a few additional tweaks can generate a lot of satisfaction, especially if running up in the mountains against faster cars. You're right about the tyres though - and the stock suspension doesn't need touching, just refreshing.

From my experience with Caterhams the less grip equates to a more thrilling drive, it’s not all about how fast more about how much fun, given the speed limits etc.

Daily drove an elise s2 for 5 years. Wonderful car but i do not recommend daily driving one. It became a bit to familiar and the thrill and excitement was lost because i had no other car to compare it to. I think it is best left as a fun weekend car where you really feel the effect after steppiung out of your daily and into an elise.

Wonderful to see you so happy. I think you are right to keep this car. Whatever cars come and go through your life, this one looks like a real long term love affair. It will be your emotional haven. If only the 308 had put such a big smile on your face. But maybe you have done everything that makes sense with the Ferrari and it is time to cut it loose, add up the cash you get for it, move on to the next adventure. With the Lotus as your pure pleasure driver, and the Alfa GTA as your daily work horse, I'd be curious what kind of car(s) you might want to explore next. Maybe taking a step back from "performance" cars and exploring other classic configurations and makes...the French Citroens, Peugeots, Simcas, and the British stuff from the fifties, XK120 Jag, same era for early Lancias, Saab 96, and that may be too historical for you...anyway...yes keep the Lotus for a long time.

Sensed from the opening look on your face that you were going to be overjoyed. Just look what you and your friends have achieved - what appears to be a well conceived and solid structural repair of a car that just might have been lost. That it ran somewhat over budget is not relevant given that it’s doubtful that anyone could put a price on the driving enjoyment you were plainly getting in return. Great job. Great outcome. You make such a fundamental point about the Elise; it is so much fun because it’s light, small, has great steering feel and good visibility. I can’t understand how the rest of the industry has got away with cars having become heavy, big, and with no feedback and that feel like you are sitting in a very deep bathtub trying to peer over the edges - and convince us they are selling us the ‘ultimate driving machine’. More like the Emperor’s new car! Fast they maybe but horrible to drive. I know the arguments about crash safety but the reality is that many smallish hatchbacks are more fun than vastly more expensive ‘sports’ cars and sports saloons.

For the tires, i generally prefer a square setup, as wide as possible. Then tune the suspension to suit. As for the bushing etc. I wish you were on this side of the pond. I could have made you a bespoke set of bushings in just about any material from bronze to HDPE to abs fairly easily. They would account for any wear in the system. I did this to my 1980 300sd, and the replacement new bushings still had some play. The ones I made require very light oil to work and have 0 play. Granted this is for a auto, but the linkage system on this is very trublesome.

Happy, you love the Elise so much... They are in a way "perfect" sports cars. Pity we won't see any Series 4 from Lotus anymore. My Series 2 run on lightweight Exige type of wheels and have 195 front and 225 rear. Standard was i think 175 section in front. When i look in the market for sports tyres in these dimensions : 195/50/R16 W front and 225/45/R17 W rear, i have either new Yokohama A052 or Toyo R888R (GG) which is the one i keep using. They last for about 10 k miles if driven in )road /occasional trackday) kind of condition, very good grip when warm, fairly ok and predictable in wet, their only downside is, they are quite noisy, which doesnt matter much in an Elise where you dont listen to the radio while driving anyway... Maybe Yokohama are better, but Toyo is good price...

Tyres: Toyo (R888R) or Yokohama (A048 if still available?). Whichever tyre you go for, make sure they work with a lightweight car. Dampers: Nitrons have a good reputation on Caterhams and they aren't costed as if they were made of precious metal.

I was thinking about £1k ish Jack for the chassis repair (with some mates-rates) so you're pretty close .Regards suspension, over & above the coilovers, these cars also benefit from fresh bushes & ball joints all round - so unless yours has already been done, I'd look into this - check all the wishbones are true & the rear toe links are 100% too. All this is very much a DIY activity & you can get complete kits, to OEM spec (or higher) so you know you have all you need. Regards coilovers, my 1st choice would be Ohlins 2 way (also used by Lotus Motorsport) but could be over budget. Close to you in Oxfordshire is Nitron Racing who do a lot on Lotus 111 cars ... maybe you could do some kinda YT tie-up with them or Elise Parts in Kim Bolton ? Good luck

When you do the tyres Jack, I would go for Yokohamas and their equivalent today of what (20 years ago) was the A022. I ran my SW20 MR2 on them for almost 6 years and it never, ever let go. Technically, accoring to the Elise experts, you can run a 135 on the front, the 185s were fitted for looks. Personally, I'd run the 205s front and 225s rear (like my SW20). Glad its sorted and you are enjoying it.

I'd imagine if you like how it handles and turns in, you'd probably not want to muck with the tread sizing too much(more grip is nice, but it does kinda dulls down that light/spirited feel). On the other hand if you wanted more grip, I'd probably go with 205s all round for a more square setup, which wouldn't give you that much more grip, but would also probably highlight the snappy oversteer side of its handling...
@drew699

If anyone knows about tyres set up its Lotus. IMHO don’t over tyre it. It makes the steering heavier & messes with the grip levels & stresses on the wishbones & bushes etc that will probably wear the bushes quicker. Don’t forget about bigger tyres will stress the rear toe links too!

Loving this, Jack. You already know my thoughts about that particular paint colour 🤣 Not sure if you picked up on a previous post...... my experience of the K series engine has been unfavourable.... they seem to get through a lot of oil. Bouncing off the rev limiter just might tip the balance between working and an inevitable breakdown. Haha.... to quote Ian Dury 🎶🎵 Slow down, Itinerant child; The Boys in Blue are waiting 😁 Stay safe, peace and respect 👍

I have no idea whether it's been done or not, but it seems like swapping out the K series for a Honda B series or something like it would be a great upgrade that retains the original soul of the car, just with a better reliable engine. Edit: Just looked it up and seems like a K20 is the engine of choice for the kind of swap I'm thinking of. A K20 S1 Elise would be an insane car.

Yokohama Advan Neova AD08R's. Not much point looking elsewhere. I had S2 Elise Bilsteins on my S1 for the first 12 years of ownership. When they got tatty I upgraded to a set of Nitron Street Series shocks which are a bit firmer, but very good, I'm very happy with them. Might need helper springs on the rear though, mine did.

Unless it has been done recently it would be worth changing the gearbox oil, just make sure that it is the correct Honda spec MTF94.

It's not the Honda engine/gearbox. It has the Rover K series engine/gearbox. But yes changing the gearbox for quality oil would be a good first step👍

@@tides2002 100% correct chris, correct fresh 94 oil makes a noticeable difference, also lubing the clutch arm bushes in the bellhousing makes a good improvement in clutch feel.

@@tides2002 Sorry hadn't realised that. I always thought the gearbox was taken from the T series and Honda's gearbox couldn't as it Honda's crankshaft ran in reverse so the direction was changed by the gearbox, so it wasn't compatible??

Wow, £9040 for a basically sorted Elise S1 with a few niggles? That's chickenfeed really in 2021, Elises with around 80k on the clock seem to go for about £13k - £14k ... I bought my S1 for £9500 over 4 years ago - so you did very well! :-)

That overall price is a steal for that car now, it was a wreck before so to just pay £1500 to get it worthy of the road again is brilliant.
