I saw and admired my first LM002 on the Pacific Hiway (near SeaTac Airport Federal Way, Washington in June of 1993. I was with my friend Benjamin Barr after a D.E.C.A. Competition within our Senior Year of High School. While I was driving my 1978 Metalic Brown Ford Fairmont Sedan, I spotted this beautiful Red Bohemeth parked at a "Drinking Hole" and pulled over... As we were gawking, the owner came out and offered us a personal tour of this fabulous rig with kindness. At the time I had posters of VECTOR, TESTOROSSAS, and 25th Anniversary Countaches on my bedroom walls, but the patience and courtesy this owner had with 18yo boys is still instilled in me. Thank you, random LM002 owner!

Little-known fact: while engine and chassis were made by Lamborghini themselves, the bodywork was made in northern Spain by a Basque coachbuilder with their roots in bus making, Irizar (you'll see plenty of Irizar-badged buses on the road to this day in Europe). Fond memories of reading about this beast back in the day and drooling over it as a teenager, loved listening to that V12 soundtrack!

A supercar dealer in our town had one of these about 25 years ago. We asked if we could make a small joyride with it as it looked so extremely exotic. He was happy about anybody being interested in the weird thing, so we got it for the afternoon. Back then it was about the price of a new medium engined BMW 3 Series. It drove like a traktor, the stickshift was extremely clunky and the acceleration was very slow (we didn't know about the kickdown back then), but the sound was insane. It was a golden one.

@bortsimons7457
@bortsimons7457 4 күн бұрын
@@GraeboProductions No chance for me to test it by now, as this story is about 25 years old, but apparently the car has some kind of "restistance device" that hinders you from giving full throttle (unintentinally?). That's what i called "kickdown". It is said, that you need to overcome this to unleash the full potential of the car. (It has nothing to do with shifting a gear low). If this "resistor" in fact does not exist, and it was operated correctly (by simply stepping on the gas pedal to the end) then I can tell from experience: This car is as slow as a 92hp Volkswagen T3 Bus which we "raced" back then.

Back in February, 1988, I was working at the Calgary Olympics with Nakiska Ski Resort and the IOC. One day His Royal Highness Prince Albert of Monaco showed up driving the LM002. He was there to compete for Monaco in the Bobsleigh competition. I was lucky to sit in the driver's seat for a few minutes and was enthralled. Several hours later, the LM002 failed to start after sitting in -6 C temperature. It left on a flatbed truck later... I have only seen a couple since at car events, never being driven.

EDIT Note (@jasoncammisa): “Sadly this was only in theory. They built one, let Autocar and R&T test it, and then that was it” Lamborghini shenanigans once again Original comment: There was an option on the LM002 which added a 7.2 V12. It was a marine engine Lamborghini made for off shore racing boats. It’s hard to nail down numbers, but it was rumoured to be near 600hp. And a healthy 5 MPG So you could order from Lamborghini a Humvee more or less with an engine used for off sore speed boat racing. And that’s why I love Lamborghini.

The 7.3-litre version was the LM-004. However its power output at 420hp was lesser than the 5.2-litre QV engines, the torque-curve was more suitable for an off-roader and of course higher than the "small" engine version by 100 Nm. The British Autocar magazine had an article about a military version of this large-engined beast with a factory driver. Unfortunately I don't have the original article which was published in May 1986 just a translation to German which I now turn back to English: ".... Together with the works driver, a kind of kamikaze pilot, we drove up a hill with a gradient of around 30 degrees, which the LM took effortlessly; this was followed by a 50-degree gradient. In both cases, the car climbed unstoppably like a mountain goat. You have to trust the car blindly in such situations, because the only thing you can see is its hood. Finally came the aforementioned 70-degree incline. We are still unsure of our feelings about this, but the car passed this test with bravour. Spectators reported that the front wheels had lifted off the ground; we should have earned an entry in the Guinness Book of Records for this feat."

@@JasonCammisa I made an edit to my orginal comment. I remember reading about some "Custom" order getting the 7.2. But again your sources are way way way better then anything I have access too. So most likely Lamborghini Shennaginages Also you should look into LM002 models customized by Carrozzeria Diomante. I believe he made the LM002 Estate models for Lamborghini, and also did some WILD versions. He made a 2 door LM002, with an extended back with lounge chairs. And the passenger seat had a elevator build into it so that they could act as a spotter for the drive.

There was a video game made by Broderbund called "Stunts", it was released in 1990. This was one of the cars it featured, and I was well into adulthood before I found out that it really existed.

Didn't know my Golf 2 GTI 8V 1987 shares a part with the LM002 😅. I have the same Giugiaro Nardi steering wheel inside my one.

Haha, the "absolutely stellar to drive" at 2:09 is a bit at odds with the sweat of fear at the end of the video! 😆

I worked at a golf course in the 90s and one of the members owned one of these. He tried drag racing a Porsche 944 out of the parking lot once and dropped the transmission, heard a loud clunk and went nowhere. We were in Atlantic Canada and it ended up being towed to New Jersey for repairs. It was gone for 4 1/2 months lol.

I, for one, am glad the Scirocco got "shoehorned" into a Lambo video. I have my first Scirocco 16V being trailered to me as I type, and it's partly Jason's fault (the video with Leno reminded me how much of a cool car it is)!

This was so good. This scriptwriting should be taught in schools. Along with Jason's delivery and some excellent cinematography and editing just made the perfect viewing experience. The subject of the video also was something very interesting to me. Back in the late 80s I was a teen, and one of the 4x4 magazines did a huge article on this vehicle. I personally thought it was the coolest thing as I was really into off road vehicles yet the Countach was still the pinnacle of the wow factor. I know I will re-watch this episode, thanks!

I actually got to look at one at the Shell station in Munising. I had to run across the street and ask the owner what it was. He told me it could still run 70mph with 4 flat tires and could only come with 3 options, one was a gun turret. Thanks for the video and restoring a memory.

I really want one lightened and probably turboed or perhaps powering an electric motor as well for more power that thing needs at least 2000hp to recognize its true potential ;')

For probably close to a decade, there was a red LMO002 parked at a family friends repair shop. I was lucky enough to sit in it, and check it out since I could hang there on the weekend while they bs'd. I literally didn't see the thing move for at minimum 10 years. Never knew what happened to it, but I remember my dad's friend said I'd never see another one of these...and it's true. I still have not seen another LM002 in person, and that was well over 15 years ago.
