One of. My favourite songs It came out the year I lost allu family I was 14. Its difficult for people to believe that a 14 year old boy can slip through the government security net. So I packed my bag an hitched out of Cornwall to London... I did things I'm not proud of to servive. Aged 19 with no drug habit one hot summer day I hitched down to Brighton an never left I fell in love an had a wonderful 28 years together. We moved back to Cornwall 6 years ago and last year cancer came knocking an took him.. Now alone again an almost back fr the town I left. I'm 52 now an I feel like iv one last adventure in me. I miss Brighton. An I really miss Johnny. So every time I here this song it take me back. We had so much laughter in our life's

Remembering how this song was initially released when it was still uncomfortable for the gay to be a lonesome soul in small neighbourhoods, yet the lyrics can equally be akin to anyone who is in the situation of being an ‘outsider’ in a community, whatever their persuasion. It's a shame her inhaling is so audible. You wouldn't hear that with a classically trained singer, unless they deliberately used it to add emotion to a piece that benefitted from it. Too many people seem to think it's unavoidable but you won't hear an opera singer sucking in a lung full.

This song and many other eighties songs is the reason we used to be happier and why depression and suicide weren't nearly as big as a problem as it is now-because back in the day listening to music was sacred and it was about cleansing your soul, it wasn't about making the demons go away it was about here are the demons now deal with them. If I was depressed or suicidal back in the eighties or nineties I would listen to songs like this and it provided a much needed escape from real life. What do kids have today-stuck all day on a fone getting bullied at school and on the street and when they go to what shud b their sacred space they get the same abuse on social media listening to wonderfully poetic songs like "break up with ur girlfriend I'm bored...."
