The relationship between John and Al in this is so wonderful. They're two men broken in the opposite ways, who are able to help each other heal without even meeting face to face. John has complete faith in his profession, being dedicated to his backlog of cases and job back in New York, and willing to do his job in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds at the Christmas party. His personal life, on the other hand, is a complete disaster, his marriage ruined, his children taken from him, and his faith in his ability to be a husband and father severely shaken. Al is the opposite: a man whose faith in his profession has been destroyed, to the point where he is incapable of pulling his gun and so works what he obviously regards as a meaningless job, jockeying papers across a desk because he can't bring himself to go back on the street. His personal life, however, is going very well. He's obviously happily married, and eagerly anticipating being a father for the first time. Through Al, John is able to give voice to his fears and mistakes, confronting them, and realizing what he needs to do to repair his relationship with his wife. Through John, Al is able to see the value of his profession, and to find courage and meaning once again. God I love this movie. It's so much more than a simple action flick (although it is a GREAT action flick), which I think is why it has stayed so prominent in the public consciousness for years and years, past imitator after imitator.

Cool bit if trivia: This was "Carl Winslow's" first role. He had been struggling to find work as an actor and was ready to give up. No one really supported him except for his mom who told him not to give up. He did an interview about it. I can't remember for sure, but I think she got to see this movie and died not too long after. He said she was proud of him. Another bit of trivia: Alan Rickman had to do the final fall scene stunt himself. They had him in a harness and told him they were going to release it in the count of 3, but they released him sooner. He was already nervous about the stunt. His facial expression wasn't acting. He was legitimately terrified

This was Bruce Willis’ first action/dramatic role. Before this, he was well known as a comedic actor, so seeing him play the lead role as an action hero was jarring for audiences when this movie first came out. The modern equivalent would be Chris Pratt, who played Andy on Parks and Recreation, until he starred in Guardians of the Galaxy and Jurassic World. This was also Alan Rickman’s first movie ever.

Fun fact: Alan Rickman (Hans Gruber) agreed to do the fall scene himself when asked by director, John McTiernan, to add authenticity to his death. Rickman was rigged to be dropped backwards onto a crash mat 40 feet below him on the count of "three", however, Die Hard stunt coordinator, Charlie Picerni, devised a plan to drop Rickman at "one" in order to provoke a genuine reaction of shock and terror. And that is the take they went with in the movie.

There is a Carl Winslow theory. Reginald played aNY chip in Ghostbusters. After those events he moved to LA to escape the craziness. Then Nakatomi happens. Al winds up going insane and is in a mental hospital where Carl Winslow is him projecting a better life.

@25:49, this bad guy whupping up on McClane is played by the late Russian ballet great Alexander Godunov. So he is used to doing high kicks 😉In an interview for Die Hard at the time of its release, Bruce Willis was fanboying because he couldn't believe he was in a movie with this internationally famous dude.

This is my second favourite movie, as well as favourite Christmas and action movie. I first saw it when i was 11 or 12 when it was first on British tv in the early 90's. One thing i've always hated is the thought of walking on broken glass. I loved your reaction and hope you plan to check out some of the sequels. Also if you haven't watched them i also recommend the Lethal Weapon movies.

Alan Rickman is awesome. Have you seen Quigley Down Under ? If not that's a must. And to answer your question not only could you smoke in the airport you could smoke on the plane. And I used to work with an airplane mechanic and said when people used to smoke on the plane it was easier to find air leaks in the fuselage. Bcuz the smoke would leave a nicotine stained trail straight to the leak.

@12:35, that is the point - McClane isn't trying to be a hero. He knows he is outnumbered and outgunned. He is a regular ordinary man who just happens to be a police officer. He isn't ex-Special Forces, he isn't a superhero. That is why we root so hard for him. When he sees that help from the outside won't come in time to save his wife and her coworkers, he digs deep and does stuff that he didn't even think he was capable of. I will always love the first Die Hard movie for that reason. After this the movies got more and more outlandish with each release. That's why at the end of this flick, Holly says that she is "Mrs. McClane". She knows he went through hell to save her.

For those interested (probably few but what the hell) in deep Hollywood: Roy Rogers was a brother Mason. In a 40-story building the main action takes place on floors/degrees 30-33. Just down the street (where the police set up shop), well, look at it from Google-Earth and see what you 'see' (around Fairmont Century Plaza & McKinsey & Co). Having been in Hollywood, at high levels, I'm not talkin' trash. This movie is about Ascension. Holly Gennero's namesake is 'holy January'. Ancient deity. The keeper of doors. Ellis is Elohim, the god, to be cast down. It's all very weird how the industry really works. It's like people assuming Hans & co are terrorists, assuming Hollywood are entertainers . . . they have a different agenda.

Oh man this is another of my top fave movies! It’s my family’s xmas movie ❤ Alan Rickman will forever be Hans to me! So excited for u to see him in this role! 😊 Best group of bad guys ever! Karl in real life, I believe, was a ballet dancer! I always look for the ballet kick in the fight 😅 My fave part wasn’t shown here…it’s when the elevator dings and then it blows up 😊 elevator dings always give me chills now
