You absolutely need to watch the third film, Die Hard With a Vengeance. The director of the first film comes back, and it’s just as good as the first one. Plus it introduces Samuel L. Jackson, and the chemistry between Willis and Jackson is incredible. It’s probably the funniest of all the Die Hard films.

Willis’ breakout role was as the male lead on a comedy series called ‘Moonlighting’. Before it came out, people were shitting all over his casting because they thought he wouldn’t be able to do action.

I was about to write the same. Haven't seen that series since it aired originally, so no idea how well it aged. But back in the days, I thought it was quite entertaining, and the duo Bruce Willis + Cybill Shepherd (btw, I hope CineBinge will watch Taxi Driver one day) worked pretty well together. There are some similarities to Pierce Brosnan, who got famous with the TV show "Remington Steele" with a somehow similar concept to ""Moonlighting", before getting the Job as James Bond.

Moonlighting was much watch TV back in the day. I was pretty young when it came on, but I still watched it with my folks and loved it. You could tell Willis was going to be a star. His on screen charisma was enormous. When Die Hard came out, to say he blew up would be an understatement. There had never been an action movie or a action hero like Die Hard and John McClane.

The reason Willis has the comedic timing down is because he was a comedy actor before the first Die Hard, he was among other things the star of a show called Moonlighting where he portrayed a detective and it was a pretty good show. His casting in Die Hard was pretty controversial and Mctiernan, the director, had huge troubles with Fox to get Willis in the role.

I still think the first is the best. Han's set one hell of a bar for villains, some of the best villains of all time, are still compared to him. I will say Simon gave him a pretty good run for his money. That's just my opinion, but that's the best part of movies. Movies are art, and art is subjective. Fun fact, Ejector Seats are also called Zero-zero seats because that's the height that you can survive ejection using one of them. Yes, the escape, while improbable, is also possible but his spine and legs would NOT appreciate that landing.
@jamesenglish5740
@jamesenglish5740 6 ай бұрын
Plus the fact that ejection seats do not exist in that type of plane. There is no canopy to pop to actually make a hole for the ejection to take place.
@pomztoybox6877
@pomztoybox6877 6 ай бұрын
Another fun fact; Cargo planes do not have ejection seats. Those are reserved for fighters and bombers. The point of an ejection seat is to egress a pilot from an aircraft that is falling out of the sky (usually by gunfire). Cargo planes generally are not shot out of the sky.
@OleAImsen
@OleAImsen 6 ай бұрын
I read (sometime in the 1990s) that the ejector seat of the F-16 was designed such that the pilot would survive if they ejected upside down at 30 metres/100 feet. I've seen video of ejections where the seat has clearly adjusted trajectory to upwards fro sideways. Mind you, injuries because the parachute does not have adequate time to slow the fall down is inevitable at very low altitude opening.
@GhostWatcher2024
@GhostWatcher2024 6 ай бұрын
But if that plane DID have an ejection seat, older ejection seats (i.e., 1970s and before) ARE as Simone thought... flight crew wears the chute pack, and the seat just launches them... but newer ejection seats, the chute is part of the seat harness when you strap in, and the seat is designed to launch you and then detach from the harness, leaving you with the chute.

To answer Simone, the reporter (played by Sheila McCarthy) was on Star Trek... but she was on Discovery so that's probably not where you saw her. (The main bad guy of course played Section 31's Luther Sloan.) She's Canadian though so you likely saw her somewhere on TV. Speaking of that, the mustached cop was Dennis Franz, who had been on Hill Street Blues playing a cop, and was fairly recognizable at the time. A couple of years later, he'd be cast on NYPD Blue and became much, much more famous. And more naked as well, but that's another topic. He was also Captain Klegghorn on the animated Mighty Ducks show. But again, probably not something you were watching.

@spextrekid9410 I completely agree, the unrated version is much better, you can tell the director and cast wanted to do that the whole time but the studio was like "no we need it to be PG-13" especially since there's alternate takes that take advantage of that "unrated" banner that they definitely shot alongside the PG-13 edits, I.E more violence and swearing as well as better jokes, also I feel the unrated version is edited better, the theatrical has some weird hard cuts that disrupt the flow but the unrated cut got rid of them, It just feels a lot better when you compare both cuts

If I recall, Die Hard 3 wasn't a big hit upon release but has gained a much more positive reappraisal over time, and I think it largely has to do with how McTiernan takes the Die Hard formula and just expands it, basically unleashing John McClane's chaos across an entire city in one big game of cat and mouse. It doesn't take place during Christmas like the first two. The movie has some strong summer vibes it to. So when spent the weekend in New York City this past summer, I stumbled upon a channel playing Die Hard 3 when I was in my hotel room and thought, "This is perfect."

Great reaction as always. FYI, I am a retired elevator inspector. All elevators are required to have an escape hatch. It is used for emergency purposes only. Just in case, if passengers have to be taken out of the elevator if it is stuck in between floors and the elevator can not be moved. Whoever told you It was a trope is full of it. A little bit of history.. Idiots used to do something called "elevator surfing" before. People would open the hatch and stand on top of the elevator while it was moving, just for kicks. As you can imagine, people died, so laws were passed. That is why It is required to be locked from on top as well. It has slide bolts holding it down on top of the elevator car. It's bolted down, so you can't open it from inside unless someone leaves it unlocked or the slide bolts are broken. In case you're wondering, while doing inspections, I have found some that were broken that could open. As an inspector, we would shut the elevator down until it got fixed. Unfortunately, inspections are only required once a year. So, theoretically, there are elevators operating that can be opened from inside.

Willis is in the final room directed by Tarantino. He loved it so much he didn’t even want a credit for it, he just wanted to be a part of it.

The luggage scene was done on a soundstage built especially for the scene, but many airports have similar looking mechanisms for moving luggage and there are in fact places on belts where luggage must fit under or it's bypassed and not loaded.

There's a series of videos by Screen Junkies called "Honest Action" where they had medical experts analyze how many times characters would've died in real life. It turns out that this movie is the only one in the entire franchise where McClane would've survived by the end. I remember certain critics like Roger Ebert raving about that shot where McClane ejects out of the plane. It was a new & refreshing way to present such a scene. Director Renny Harlin did another Die Hard scenario film titled "Cliffhanger" starring Sylvester Stallone in 1993. If you travel during the holidays, then DH2 is definitely a Christmas movie.

Even tho you thought it was too silly, back in 1990 film critic Roger Ebert praised the arial shot of Willis ejecting up towards the camera. He said in his very positive review of the film: "I love it when a director finds a new way to show me something," also calling it "exhilarating" and "sensationally effective." His work partner Gene Siskel was even more enthusiastic about this sequel, putting it on his Top 10 best films of the year list.

Very little in this movie is realistic, but its still a fun ride. The bad guy's plot would never work simply because airliners always have enough fuel to divert to other airports. Jet fuel also won't light from just a lighter, Mythbusters actually tested that one. Bruce Willis got his start in the TV romantic comedy series Moonlighting, so he was considered a very odd choice as an action hero when he was cast in Die Hard.

Bruce Willis was comedically breaking the 4th wall years before Deadpool even showed up in the comics in one of the earliest dramedies, Moonlighting (1985). Starred in action comedies like Red (2010), Whole Nine Yards (2000) and Hudson Hawk (1991). Straight up comedies like Death Becomes Her (1992), Look Who's Talking (1989) and Moonrise Kingdom (2012). And was the star in one of the most underrated animated comedy films, Over the Hedge (2006).

The hardest thing for me in this movie is the cockpit scene with the grenades. And it's not the ejecting or the exploding or the parachuting the thing that has always bug me is how long it took the grenades to explode. I know you can have grenades set to different lengths of time but it seems like grenades are only effective if they blow up fairly quickly after their throne😅 but this is still a top notch top-notch action movie

If the prop grenades were made accurate to a real grenade design than my memory of field manuals says that the ones they used have fifteen second fuses, which puts the time from first throw to boom pretty close. Gotta allow for some time dilation trickery, but they didn't stretch it too far.

Early fax machines printed data as soon as it came in over the line, so they were slow (maybe a page a minute). Later fax machines essentially were laser/ink jet printers with data buffers; the entire transmission would come in, stored in the buffer, then print out all at once just like any other print job. After they just became any other data stream for a computer, so they would show up as PDFs or collated image files.

So this is semi-realistic of an airport luggage handling area. The main difference are: 1) smoke and steam. There is not usually random steam valves going off periodically, and the air is not filled with the haze and wofts of smoke. 2) it’s usually pretty brightly lit. It’s an industrial space with lots of hazards and fast moving machinery, there are rows and rows of overhead lights. They usually are not red, blue, and yellow color washes and decorative low level lighting along the walls. It’s More like the lights you find in a modern shipping warehouse. 3) most of the machinery is not painted for mood. It’s usually white, and off white, or gray. And there is usually a lot of color coded mechanical things in reds, oranges, yellows, etc. 4) you have defined walkways and areas usually as straight as possible. You are not ducking in around and under conveyors and other machinery cabinets. There is usually a clear aisle with guard rails and caution signs and labeling everywhere. 5) slow lumbering belts. You don’t have slow moving belts like these very often. Most things move about 3-5 times this speed. 6) diving on conveyers would usually trip safety sensors. 7) there is usually a lot more activity and sounds of bells and indicator noises. 8) most airports use large plastic totes. The luggage is sorted in these totes and them moved at around between 10-30mph across the airport on beds of rollers as it’s just much faster. 9) there aren’t really crusher machines. There are machines that try to orient bags, others that try ensure bits are not hanging out, lots of ones that move them from track to track, lots of scanners to track their progress, but very few that try to crush them. 10) there are usually more safety cages and bars. While there are lots of open areas where you can, you tend to see more cages, guards, and sides on belts and such. This is mainly to prevent people from getting caught up in moving parts, falling onto belts, or dropping things into luggage.

One movie I really hope you check out is The Long Kiss Goodnight (1996), which is by writer Shane Black (Lethal Weapon, The Nice Guys) and director Renny Harlin, who directed this movie. It's set at Christmas, so it would be great to get it in during the holidays here, and it's another really fun over-the-top action movie (and in addition to tying into this second Die Hard through the director, it kinda ties into the third Die Hard, which is excellent). I've mentioned this once before, but you've actually seen a clip from Long Kiss Goodnight, completely repurposed: some of the material from that movie appears in The Final Destination as the 3D movie the characters go see.

Bruce Willis was my favorite actor as an kid. From the tv series "Moonlighting" to releasing an album called "The Return of Bruno". Becoming both the highest paid actor of the day and an major movie star with DH1. The teaser trailer for Die Harder had me so pumped to see what McClane would do next. Bruce says a line from the movie, "How can the same thing happen to the same guy, twice?". July 4th weekend, my mother and me saw it the theatre and went so crazy over it. The director, Renny Harlin had another movie out the same year called The Adventures of Ford Fairlane. The action, suspense, humor and stakes were a little looser. But still so entertaining. dir. Harlin also made some other classics:Cliffhanger (1993), Cutthroat Island (1995), The Long Kiss Goodnight (1996), Deep Blue Sea (1999), Mindhunters (2004) and The Covenant (2006). The first 2 Die Hards together are an absolute must for Xmas. No way you get past December without watching both of them.

Actually most elevators do have a that access panel in the ceiling. In passenger elevators it usually blends in with interior and dont notice it. Freight elevators usually don't have fancy interiors. All are supposed to have a safety device disabling the operation of elevator, some of which being connection plugged together that the opening of the roof panel unplugs said connection and the elevator company has to come put it back online

12:10 "I've hear that the panel in elevator ceilings is only an action movie trope; it's not a real thing." Yes and no. They usually exist but are definitely not so easy to use: I found this online, posted by a man who worked as an elevator technician his whole life, now recently retired: Whether the cabin has a trapdoor in the roof depends on which code the installation complies with. Most older lifts have a trapdoor in the roof. This is always locked, and is electrically interlocked with the control system so that opening it will immediately stop the lift. It is ONLY for use by qualified elevator mechanics, or in extreme situations by emergency services, who will most often defer to the elevator tech anyway. The reason you cannot readily see it is that there is usually a ceiling panel that needs to be removed to expose the car roof.
