1) Fill the 3 gallon jug and dump in into the 5. 2) Fill the 3 gallon just again and fill the 5. This leaves 1 gallon in the 3 gallon. 3) Dump the five gallons out and put the 1 gallon in. 4) Fill the 3 gallon one more time and dump it in the 5 and that gives your 4 gallons.

Conversely, you can also get to 4 gallons by doing it this way: 1) Fill the 5 gallon jug and dump it into the 3 (leaves 2 gallons in the 5 gallon jug). 2) Empty the 3 gallon jug, dump the remaining 2 gallons into the 3 gallon jug. 3) Refill the 5 gallon jug, and fill the 3 gallon jug (which already has 2 gallons in it) which leaves the 5 gallon jug with 4 gallons.

The writer of the film was interviewed by the FBI because when they were sent a copy of the script to review for security purposes, they realized that the basics of Simon's plan to distract the NYPD and burrow through to the money could actually work. He had to explain to them that every piece of information he'd used to plot it out was from publicly available sources and guided tours. They actually had to implement new security procedures at the Federal Reserve due to the movie so that this couldn't happen in real life. Also, this is easily the 2nd best Die Hard film, only falling short of "Die Hard" (1988) itself. Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson were the duo we didn't know we needed, and Jeremy Irons is great as a villain.

A writer for a TV show (CIS ?) exposed how your 'Archived Encrypted Data' (& thereby meant to be untraceable) internet searches can be used to find you when he was searching things like 'best way to kill someone?', 'best way to dispose of a body?', 'how to make a homemade bomb?' & several more 'criminal' searches triggered an alert at google when they were doing a 'Data Analysis' of old searches that they then tipped of to the F.B.I. Together they broke the location encryption (searches are not encrypted, just your personal info) & found his address & the F.B.I. raided his house & arrested him, the only reason he got off was because the company proved he was doing research for the show.

One funny fact about this movie is that the heist was so well planned and plausible enough that the screenwriter got questioned by the fbi after the movie came out. The federal reserve set mirrored to closely what the bank vault actually looks like in real life and there really is a subway spur you could drill through to get to the vault

Except that there are tours so you can visit that vault, Federal reserve vault in NYC was build in 1920s, it hold near 500 000 gold bars , 6200 tons, in 2019, you would need 300 trucks to move that gold, 30 is too few,, its 80 ft under street level and 50 ft under sea level and even if Manhattan has metro lines deeper that that, in that part of manhattan metro lines are just under the street surface.

What I liked about this Die Hard movie is that the background Police were competant. They weren't dumb and standing around like in Die Hard 1 & 2. They quickly found the bomb in chinatown, found out how much explosive Simon had, and they didn't get in McClane and Zeus' way. When not all the kids were evacuated, the bomb guy stayed behind and others went in to rescue them knowing they all could die.

I really like it when movies portray cops (other than the hero) as competent and helpful - Speed is another example. Jack is the hero of that movie, sure, but Harry, the Lieutenant, and the other officers have his back every step of the way.

Simone, Gray's Papaya is a hot dog restaurant. Every style, kind and variety you could imagine (and many you can't). It was established in NYC as was Nathan's Famous hot dogs, although Nathan's is much older. The first Nathan's s opened in 1919, the year before my grandfather was born. One major difference between the two is that Nathan's tends to stick to traditional toppings and condiments, while at Gray's variety is king. I don't live in NYC anymore, but there are three things I miss the most: the pizza, the bagels, and the hot dogs, especially Gray's Papaya.

It's funny that you mention Speed. The script for Speed was considered for development into a Die Hard movie (it's relatively easy to imagine that maybe Holly was supposed to be driving the bus, if they'd kept the basic format of the first two). Joel Silver wanted to develop this script, originally called Simon Says, as a Lethal Weapon movie, but the producers of Die Hard won that argument. Apparently, other than the names, the script is pretty much identical for something like the first half. One thing I only learned just a couple of years ago is that Jeremy Irons doesn't sing in The Lion King. The guy they got to impersonate Irons is so good I never realized it wasn't him. When Jackson was offered the role, he got really excited about it, because he loved the original Die Hard and was excited to work with both Willis (they're both in Pulp Fiction but don't interact). When you watch enough movies you start recognizing bit players who are local. Not only is Sam Jackson in the NYC-set Coming to America, but the old lady who first sees McClane wearing the billboard is also in that film, as the lady who Prince Akeem gives his earrings to on the subway. McClane jokes that he could've been sitting at home "smoking cigarettes and watching 'Captain Kangaroo.'" This line is a lyric from a song called "Flowers On the Wall," which Willis sings in Pulp Fiction right before he spots Marcellus Wallace and crashes his car. (By the way, "Captain Kangaroo" was a 1950s kids TV show that ran for almost 30 years.) The cop who plays his badge in the lottery and gets killed is actor Anthony Peck. He is a favorite of John McTiernan, also appearing in The Hunt For Red October...and the original Die Hard, as a random police officer. Obviously, it wasn't important because most people didn't notice, but they joked that the cop character from that one transferred from Los Angeles to New York between the two movies. All of the first three Die Hard movies quote a song in their score. In the original, the score frequently references "Ode to Joy." In the sequel (the one many don't notice), the score quotes "Finlandia," a tone poem by Jean Sibelius -- a reference to the film's Finnish director, Renny Harlin. So, referencing "The Ants Go Marching" -- which was originally called "When Johnny Comes Marching Home" -- is a continuation of a hallmark from the original trilogy. An elephant is always ready to travel because he has a trunk. There are two solutions to the water jug riddle. Solution One: 1) Fill the 5, dump it into the 3, leaving 2 behind. 2) Transfer the 2 from the 5 back into the 3, leaving 1 gallon of space in the 3. 3) Fill the 5 all the way, and then pour out 1 gallon from the 5 into the 3 with 2 in it, and it will leave 4 behind in the 5. Solution Two: 1) Fill the 3, pour it into the 5. 2) Fill the 3 again, pour as much into the 5 as you can, which should be 2 out of 5 gallons, leaving 1 behind in the 3. 3) Dump the 5, pour the 1 into the 5, and then fill the 3 and add that to the 5 as well, adding up to 4 gallons. When they're on the boat, John uses his teeth to pull a chunk of metal cable thread out of his arm. The ending of the movie was famously changed. In the original ending, which was a DVD extra and can be found on KZbin, McClane truly loses. Simon gets away, and they transport the gold by melting it into little souvenir Statue of Liberty figurines. Months after the events of the movie, McClane finds Simon in another country, having lost his job and Holly for good, and plays a game with Simon using a rocket launcher he's removed the directional arrows from. The game is, decide which end to point at him and which end to point at McClane, and then pull the trigger. Audiences didn't like the idea of McClane losing everything, so they did an elaborate reshoot comprising the entire Canadian ending of the movie. I think they diverged from Holly because they didn't want the series to become formulaic. The second movie calls attention to the formula, it's based around McClane and Holly, he has a sidekick in the form of the janitor, they bring back the newscaster character that Holly punched, etc. On top of echoing everyone's suggestion that it is worth watching the fourth Die Hard even though it does go more "superhero" (I still think it's better than 2), I also want to mention The Long Kiss Goodnight again, by Die Hard 2 director Renny Harlin, and featuring Samuel L. Jackson in his favorite of his own roles. I don't know if it's similar to Die Hard, but it is another great '90s action movie. It's technically a Christmas movie, but who cares, it can be watched at any time.

LIke you said, movie making and Hollywood is a small World Scripts gets bounced around, actors who're supposed to play this movie, ends up on this movie. Realisator 1 as worked with Producer b and Actor A on this movie, then 1 and A worked on another, where the wife of B was a gag reel/photography, then bits of this scenario who where not used, ended up in that other movie who was directed by Real 1. Its like a Game of Catch me if you can and there's so many interconnections, even on productions that you'd think there's none between them. Its crazy.

It was pretty common for a studio to get wind of a certain big release genre movie being made for a rival studio and then they would try to gazump the other studio by releasing their own similar movie first. Armageddon and Deep Impact come to mind, but there are other examples. Beverly Hills Cop was meant to be a Stallone film but he passed and it went to Eddie Murphy, then Stallone took the idea and turned it into Cobra. A lot of scripts kick around the place for years and get endlessly rewritten until they can make it happen. It's possible to make a living as a writer and never have a word of your writing appear on screen.

Eh, I get why this is people's favourite, it's certainly the most fun and if that's your priority that's great, but I'd say the original wins on almost every actual filmmaking metric except action sequences. I also think the actual heist in the first hangs together a lot better. It's funny George mentioned the Dark Knight coz I think like that, the writer stuffs the plot with loads of elements to kind of distract from the fact that it's very much reliant on luck, very RNG-based if you like, while Hans's plan was much tighter.

Sam and Bruce have great combative energy, Jeremy Irons is slick AF, and the plot is so dynamic, tense, and well crafted. 4 (Live Free or Die Hard) is also good. Below 1 but better than 2. Skip 5.

FUN FACT: The youngest of Zeus's nephews is played by Aldis Hodge. He appears in the last film "A Good Day to Die Hard" as a different character from the one he plays here -- military personnel, if I remember correctly. I love the first but I think this one is my favourite. The chemistry between Bruce Willis and Samuel L Jackson is amazing. Oh and I also vote for you to watch part 4. Do the unrated version and it's not far off in quality from parts 1 and 3 in my opinion. Justin Long is in it and as always, he's a very likeable character and also has great chemistry with Bruce Willis.

I'm still puzzled at George always saying that McClane was more superhuman in the 2nd film. At least he was wearing a parachute in the scene in which he ejected from a plane as opposed to the huge drops & close-ranged explosions he was taking in this movie. In the "Honest Action" videos for this franchise by Screen Junkies, it was determined by medical experts that McClane would've only survived the entirety of the 2nd movie, while he would've died at the beginning of this film. As for which DH is the best, that still goes to the original for me. If you think about it, Simon's plan only failed b/c he involved McClane. The bomb threats were enough to pull off the heist, and he could've avenged his brother at a different time. The ending is also quite anticlimactic, likely b/c it was a replacement to the original script. Apparently, Gene Siskel & Roger Ebert thought that the 2nd film is the best of the franchise.

Yeah, I too thought that calling McClane 'superhero-ish' in Die Hard 2 was unfair and odd. The guy's absolutely wrecked by the end of the second film and looks just as beat up as he does in the first and third films. @@zufgh Every action scene in DH2 actually ends w/ a trade-off of the hero losing: no one was left to interrogate after the baggage fight, the antenna array explodes and a plane is crashed after the skywalk shootout, Esperanza escapes after landing, and McClane ends up w/ blank ammunition in the snowmobile chase. All leading up to the plane fight where John loses against Stuart, and it seems that all hope is lost for Holly's plane. That is until the protagonist utters his famous catchphrase.

John McTiernan made both my two favorite movies Diehard and Predator. I’ve watch both at least 50x each over the years, both for one of the very reasons George mentioned. Both films showed flawed, reluctant, human heroes that got hurt, broken and bruised and barely survived in the end. Whether McTiernan is the greatest action movie director, I wouldn’t say that but he’s damn good.

This was the first film I ever lied about my age to get into the cinema to see. I was 12 when this came out in the UK & it had a 15 rating (meaning you had to be 15). I went with my buddy, Andy, who had full adult stubble & was like 6ft by the age of 12. He got the tickets no problems then when we were going into the actual cinema itself there was a dude checking tickets. So I hand it over & he looks at me suspiciously then asks me how old I am. I said I was 15 & let's just say he didn't look convinced. So he asks me my birthday & I quickly say 22nd December 1979. Now this was the summer of 1995 & apparently the dude was not so good with calendar math because he says "that would make you 16" quick as a flash I replied "no, it's not December yet is it ?" Dude took a sec, thought about it, realised I was right & seemed to be so confused by the whole affair that he just let me in :D

Every details in this movies are so well done . One few people notice is the clue of there is no bomb in school , when Zeus gave the bomb to the fake cops , one insist to not let it in the street cause quote " a kid could find it " meaning that they dont planning on hurt any kid .

A pretty great reaction, but I'm kinda bummed you talked over the part where one of the henchmen shows Targo the piece of scrap metal, thereby missing set-up for the twist that Simon was going to keep the gold for himself all along, and just blow up a ship full of scrap. It's a great callback to the twist in the first Die Hard when we learn that Hans plans to blow up the roof of the Nakatomi building, making it look like everyone died in the explosion so he and his men could get away with the $640M in bearer bonds. It just goes to show that Simon is just like his brother, pretending to be a terrorist and opponent to Western capitalism as a 'smoke and mirrors' tactic to distract from the fact that he's really just a thief. As for the aspirin bottle, the sticker at the bottom of it had the name of the motel Simon and his crew were staying at. Some hotels and motels will put their names on stuff like aspirin bottles and matchbooks, which is how John figured out where to find them. Simon obviously brought the bottle with him from when he first stayed at the motel after first entering the country.

The best of the series since the original. Bringing back DH1's director McTiernan was supergenius to put McClane through a massively challenging match with Gruber's baby bro. The second collaboration of Willis & Jackson (Oscar-nominated) following Pulp Fiction, Jeremy Irons after his performance as Scar in The original Lion King. The screenplay is bonkers with twists and turns. The camera work changes every now and then, like it's either a movie or feeling like a documentary based on certain angles. I've seen the alternate ending and it's a dark one. Like McClane really lost his mind and just went deadly on Simon. The marching song, "When Johnny Comes Marching Home" is perfect and on purpose. Not necessarily for the bad guys on screen. It's basically for John McClane back on his home turf of N.Y. At end of the day, it's a perfect 'Part 3' that could've been the final chapter.

This movie is one of those rare instances where a sequel matches or outdoes the original. I love Die Hard, but I think this one is my favorite. The chemistry between John and Zeus is great, Jeremy Irons is great villain, and if you told me that the song "When Johnny Comes Marching Home" would make a good base for an action movie theme before this movie came out, i would have told you that you were crazy. But, damn, it works.
