Its weird how no one argues that Home Alone isn't a Christmas movie. What does Home Alone have that makes it a Christmas movie, that Die Hard doesn't have? Home Alone is Die Hard with a kid. Not only do they take place at Christmas, they happen specifically _because_ it's Christmas.

@MarcusFlemmings they aren't _very_ different at all. What differences are there really? Sure, you can bring up swearing and violence again, but they both contain swearing and violence appropriate for their target audience. And the swearing is more aimed at amusing the audience than shocking it. Kids would laugh at "horse's ass" and "cojones" just like adults would laugh at "Yippee ka-yay M***". Both protagonists are reunited, and reconciled, with their families at the end. What's more "Christmas movie" than that? _It's a Wonderful Life_ with robbers. 😁

Just like The Grinch is not a Christmas movie because it's a heist movie. An actor should never give up an opportunity to play a villain in a big Hollywood film. If you're a new actor and you get typecast as a villain, great you'll still have lots of work for many years. If you're an established actor then you're probably going to have an opportunity to cultivate some of your acting chops. I had no idea who Tommy Lee Jones was before under siege. But after that I certainly knew who he was and he became an a-list actor because of it.

Some people say that Die Hard isn't a Christmas movie. To those people, I say you are wrong. Die Hard is undoubtedly a Christmas movie. 1. Die Hard is about a family where Dad is trying to reunite with his estranged wife and children for Christmas Eve. 2. It takes place during a Christmas party and could ONLY take place during Christmas because it's the only time a busy skyscraper would be almost empty. 3. John McClane is a barefoot weary traveler, much like Joseph and Mary. 4. McClane is helped along his journey by three wise men--Powell, Argyle, and the guy on the plane who tells John to "make fists with your toes". Each of these three characters gives John help at a different point on his journey: The traveler helps John get from New York to California, Argyle helps John get from the airport to the party, and Powell helps John get from the party to his wife. 5. "It's Christmas, Theo! It is the time for miracles." 6. The themes of the film are family, love, devotion, generosity, and sacrifice. 7. John's wife's name is Holly. 8. "'Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the house, not a creature was stirring. Except, the four assholes coming across the lawn in standard two-by-two cover formation." 9. The villains are a team of mercenary thieves posing as terrorists, representing greed, lies, selfishness, deception, and violence. 10. Die Hard is the 22nd most frequently cited movie of all time in Christmas-themed IMDb lists, just two spots behind Miracle on 34th Street 11. "Now I have a machine gun. Ho-Ho-Ho" 12. Steven de Souza, one of the two writers of the film, has publicly said "If Die Hard is not a Christmas movie, then White Christmas is not a Christmas movie". He pointed out that, unlike White Christmas, his movie took place entirely at Christmas, featured a Christmas party and the "Christ-like sacrifice" of John McClane walking on broken glass. 13. By the number of Christmas songs on the soundtrack, Die Hard is more Christmassy than 99.2% of all movies released over the past thirty years. It features "Christmas in Hollis", "Winter Wonderland", a whistled section of "Jingle Bells" and a rousing rendition of "Let It Snow" over the end credits. 14. In the final confrontation with Hans Gruber, John is only able to prevail because there was a gift-wrapping station set up for the office Christmas party, which again means Die Hard could only take place at Christmas. 15. John represents traditional Christmas, as contrasted to Ellis, who represents "California Christmas". Ellis's form of snow is cocaine. John brings traditional Christmas to Nakatomi plaza over the course of the film. Culminating in his literally wrapping a gift for Hans Gruber, and delivering it to him, which causes it to "snow" papers from the sky during the final scene. 16. Much like Santa Claus, John McClane is also a mysterious man from up north who descends down a building through the ventilation to deliver presents. 17. The whole film can be viewed as a metaphor for celebrating Christmas as an adult. When you’re a kid, Christmas is about presents and fun. As an adult you hope that it will be just as fun and exciting as when you were a kid, but it never is-family drama, unwanted guests, hassle after hassle. It’s the the same way McClane hopes Christmas will help him reconnect with Holly, but instead everything goes wrong. It’s a total nightmare, and all he can do is try to make sure he and his wife just make it through the holiday alive.

It's definitely a Christmas movie. Christmas party on Christmas Eve (yeah, a dick move by the company!), Christmas music, Christmas excess (Cocaine), gifts (the watch, the body in the lift), and it's a classic tale of redemption (Al Powell), and reconnecting with family (McClane). But I'm with you on With A Vengeance. It's easily the 2nd best movie of the franchise, possibly on par with the original.

I don't feel like things like violence, harsh language or rating (see Violent Night) have anything to do with if a movie is a "Christmas movie" or not. The fact that there are Christmas songs don't matter either. To me, what makes it a Christmas movie is one simple thing. If you remove Christmas from the movie, the entire plot falls apart. He was only in LA because it was Christmas. The building was empty because of Christmas. If you place the movie at any other time of the year, their entire plan falls apart. Basically, if Christmas itself or the Christmas season play an integral part in the story, that makes it a Christmas movie. Yes, there is more to it than that sometimes, but a lot of the time that's a deciding factor. But that's just like, my opinion, man.

Otherwise, I really don't care about that franchise one bit. Usually the first 15 mins are spectacularly great as that's where they seem to be puting most of their production budget, the rest is just filler that fizzles out to an uninspired ending that people just watch because of habit. Keira Knightly had an action role as a bounty hunter in Domino but didn't quite work. Die Hard 3 is so ridiculous and relies on so much lazy coincidence and the elevator gun fight was much better in Sonatine.Stephen Fry was once asked whether one of his film's was based on real life (possibly Peter's Friends) he said no but Die Hard was very close to a situation he once found himself in.

Ok so I've had a few days to put my thoughts about this as it seems to get brought up every Xmas. Saying Die Hard is not a Xmas movie because it has violence is like saying Bad Santa isn't one because it shows alcohol abuse, foul language and crude humour. Die Hard is a Xmas movie for ADULTS who want to escape the family friendly themes they are subjected to especially if they have kids. Also you have to ask what does Xmas even mean to people? Some may say a time to be jolly, spending time with the family. But others may see it as a time of strife, stressconflict with family or inlaws (this is true now as some people are efusing to see their family because they voted for Trump). Or it can be a well deserved celebration at the end of a difficult year with hopes of a better new year. Some may hate it because they don't have family or a significant other and find it lonely.... TBC
@robintsang47618 күн бұрын
These issues can be found in Die Hard, The whole premise of the movie is that John travels from NYC to Cali in hopes of being a family againwith his estranged wife and kids. And the first thing he does is get into an arguement with Holly over her surname. He is then alone throughout the movie with that hope he can overcome the strife represented by Hans Grubber and get back to his wife and family. Lethal Weapon also a Xmas movie follows a similar pattern of a man Riggs who has lost his love and given up hopes wanting to end it all, but finds a light at the end of the tunnel with his friendship with his new partner Murtaugh, who invites him into the familyand shows Riggs there is something to live for (similarities to It's a Wondeful Life anyone?)

Maybe there will be a difference of answers in regards to the age of the people answering, but I bet top dollar that Gen x'ers or anyone around who remember the 80's and early 90's fondly will name Lethal Weapon and Die Hard.. Anyways a penny for my thoughts on this issue... Merry Christmas :)

How is it a christmas movie, its got violence, terrorism... Looks at the baby genocide. Families with pregnant mothers travelling hundreds of miles to suit the whims of a despotic oppressive environment. Wealthy entitled foreigners scoffing at the idea of a pauper messiah and giving the game away to the psychotic entitled cowardly villain... Man... I don't know what Christmas stories you were told as a child but I found the whole thing generally traumatising. But Die Hard brings me *joy*. And y'know: Joy to the World, McLane has come! Let Hans receive his king! and so on.

I don't think of it as a Christmas cheer movie...Home Alone or It's a Wonderful Life do the trick for me!

@@MarcusFlemmings I really must get around to watching it's a wonderful life! I hear good things, but it's hard to hear what's going on over the sounds of machine guns. Ho ho ho :D

You hit so many points I agree with here. Die Hard is not a Christmas movie, With a Vengeance is the better film, the PS1 game is amazing, Nolan was over Batman with Rise and Ben aged like wine. You had me laughing out loud with your Marion Cotillard impression. Good video as always.
