I will actually take it one step further...Die Hard is actually a HALLMARK Christmas movie. Hear me out. A married couple is on the rocks. They have separated and she has moved to a new town to start over. It is a simpler place with low gas prices. Though neither wants to, the ex-husband travels to the new town for the sake of the kids and to be "a family" at Christmas, but he actually still has secret feelings for her. He arrives during the town Christmas party. Another man hits on her, but she thwarts his advances. Little does everyone know, but a money hungry group of capitalists wants to trick the town and take advantage of all their hard work. The married couple must work together to expose their nefarious scheme. The leader of this group is exposed and defeated by the power of love, and he flies off to never trouble the town again. By the end of the movie, the locals are united, the roof of the town's biggest building is lit up, the husband makes a new friend (who has to face and overcome his personal demons), there is a funny situation, the married couple is reconciled, and the credits roll to the sound of a joyous Christmas song.

John McClane is invited to a Christmas party, he brings a Christmas present to said Christmas party, he writes, “Ho Ho Ho” on a dead guy, and his wife’s name is Holly. Plus, they are a married couple whose marriage is rocky and they reconcile at the end. If that’s not enough to convince you that it’s a Christmas movie, think of it this way: the entire movie is based around a group people held in captivity awaiting the arrival of a savior!
@ronbianco59193 жыл бұрын
The basic rule of thumb is this: if you take Christmas out of Die Hard, the movie materially changes. Kim: It doesn’t just take place during Christmas it HAS to take place during Christmas. Almost all of its humor would disappear, the sound track would have to go. a lot of its motivations would be changed. It is hands-down, unequivocally a Christmas movie. it may not be the kind of Christmas movie that people think of when you say Christmas movie, but you can’t take Christmas out of this movie and still have the same movie.

To answer whether an 11 year old should watch it: The violence is cartoony. There are good morals taught: family comes first; relationships require work, and the work is worth a good relationship; friendship can be some of the most meaningful relationships of all; compromise within relationships is sometimes necessary; it’s important to admit your mistakes; privacy should be respected. I’m sure there are more. Those are just what I could think of off the top of my head. Personally, I think those are worthwhile things for kids to be exposed to, outweighing the cartoony violence. Let the kid enjoy the holiday movie.

You can literally remove the guns and crime and have a Hallmark movie. That’s how you know it’s a Christmas movie and not just a movie set at Christmas. Don’t believe me? Write up a synopsis of the familial and relationship plot line. HER NAME IS EVEN HOLLY. “Holly is a driven businesswoman who has found success at the Nakatomi Corporation. When her career demands mean she must move to California, she takes the children with her, leaving her police officer husband, John, alone in New York. Hoping for a reconciliation, John joins her for the company’s holiday party. When a robbery threatens to keep them apart, John must confront his insecurities, as well as terrorists, so their children can get the Christmas miracle they’ve asked for.”

It’s kinda like how the Sound of Music is always aired at Christmas. Literally has nothing to do with holidays but it’s become a Christmas movie. I’m here for it though, one of the best movies of all time.
@brn987653 жыл бұрын
Bad comparison. Sound of Music is a wonderful family movie, and as a result has become associated with being good Xmas entertainment. Not so with Die Hard. As others have pointed out, Die Hard simply can't happen as the plot required without it being Christmas. The whole movie literally takes place during a Christmas party. Half the sound track is made up of Christmas songs. Several of the biggest jokes involve Christmas or Santa. The main character's entire motivation for being there was to try to make up with his wife over Christmas. He shows up with a Christmas present. Not one part of Gruber's plan works without it being Christmas (low security, executives present for access, plenty of drunk/defenseless people all gathered on one floor they can control and to easily take hostage, while the rest of the building is completely empty). In short, it is undeniably a Christmas movie -- but it may not be a Christmas movie that is appropriate for all situations or audiences.

Question is "What makes a Christmas movie?" Does it only have to be about Santa, gifts, family, Christ, have decorations, be snowing, romance, caroling, or etc?
@oncerand_directioner2 жыл бұрын
Here's my basic criteria for what makes a Christmas movie: the holiday has to be interchangeable to the story, meaning that if there was no Christmas, the movie would not work or make sense at all. That's why I say Die Hard is NOT a Christmas movie. Christmas is so irrelevant to the plot that literally the same things would happen between the characters if this took place on Valentine's Day, Easter, 4th of July, Thanksgiving or literally any other time of the year. Just because something takes place in December doesn't mean it's a Christmas movie. Otherwise the Harry Potter movies would be considered Christmas movies just because there's a few scenes of Harry and his friends celebrating it. Plus movies that are made to be Christmas movies are typically released in November or December to really get us in that holiday spirit and Die Hard was released in the summertime. Also Bruce Willis said its not so that's good for me as well. I do absolutely like Die Hard as it's a great action movie but sorry, it's not a Christmas movie.
