The wild thing about John McClane was that back in 1988, he was seen as a more grounded, emotionally sensitive male lead character that was a stark contrast to the hyper masculine films of Schwarzenegger and Stallone. Looking back, he's definitely more in line with the cowboys that Hans suggested.

Yeah, the concept of Bruce Willis: Action Hero was pretty radical in 1988. Willis was the joker from Moonlighting who sang "Respect Yourself" with the Pointer Sisters; he was basically the anti- action hero. That he is now probably best known as a generic action guy is because of Die Hard.

The John Wick example is good because in the first one he cries multiple times, but in the sequels the film makers choose to focus more on the "force of nature" aspect of his character, as he is pushed farther away from his humanity with each betrayal. The more badass and dangerous he gets, the less human he becomes, ultimately bringing ruin to everyone and everything around him.
@FrozEnbyWolf1502 жыл бұрын
Including himself, I would add, since he's forced to mutilate his hand in order to ingratiate himself to The Elder. In some ways John Wick is a metaphor for one struggling with addiction. He can't give up his old way of life and self-destructive habits, he still deals with and is dependent on his old contacts, and he grows more desperate and starts making more impulsive decisions as time goes by.

Ah man that reminds me of the Bourne movies. I used to love the Bourne Identity (actually I still do) and I was excited to watch the trilogy when Netflix had it. 10 minutes or less into the second movie and I lost interest. [spoiler] I was already put off by how Marie was portrayed, and then they killed her? Glad to see the books got it right because that move was a clear misunderstanding of how important she was. Sure, a big appeal of the movie is him being a superhero and finding out the skills he has... But Marie's different perspective adds a lot. It's not just there to contrast, it humanises him, reminds him to not only be a robot. I think probably a lot of sequels lose out because the directors focus on what they think the appeal of movie 1 was, but then lose the nuance that made the first stand out. Emotional value/humanity is probably the most often forgotten-about secret ingredient in these cases.
@Almeidaraniery2 жыл бұрын
@@armyofninjas9055 I mean, you're not wrong, but the sequels can still say something, even if the studio's intentions are more cynical. To me John Wick is a truly tragic hero, and I do enjoy both the tragic aspects of his journey and the shlocky violence. Besides, I'd love if more "crapy sequels" put out as much effort as the sequels have in action setpieces alone.
@rabidrabids53482 жыл бұрын
@@FrozEnbyWolf150 I would argue that John actually becomes _more_ human as the series progresses, (at least in three). Spoilers for John wick 3 by the way, the first two acts of 3 are focused around John trying to get rid of the bounty placed on him during the second movie, and to accomplish this, he was tasked with killing an old friend, and, after a discussion, John doesn't kill him, because by doing so, he would become that inhuman killer again, something he left behind to join his wife. And the end of the movie strongly hints that John is going to tear down the system that created him. TLDR; John chose not to be just an emotionless contract killer, in all three movies, his motives are deeply personal.

There's a lot of uncomfortable stuff involving Holly, but I think one thing the movie did well was that John does tearfully say that he's sorry for how he reacted to her career taking off. It's a relatively small amount of emotional vulnerability, and is undercut by the rest of the movie's subtext, but it's still there. If the original Die Hard was made today, it'd be a Taken-style movie where he's proven right in every possible way. Also, Holly using her maiden name keeps her safer for much of the movie and she's put in greater danger only when her relationship to John is revealed to Hans.
@ghostnote-62 жыл бұрын
It hits a little harder I think. I mean, it's the last message that he wants delivered to his wife in the event he doesn't survive. His biggest regret was being a toxic asshole to his wife, and what that did to their family. This is not something he's ever been able to vocalize before. He also acknowledged (to himself) that he was acting like a dickhead after instigating the argument when he first meets up with his wife. I thought the movie was pretty clearly making John look like the emotionally stunted one in the relationship, and not glorifying or justifying it. It was also pretty clear that Holly didn't just 'fall back in love' with John because of his macho heroics. Sure, saving the day brought them closer together, but from the beginning she was nervous and excited for his arrival, and was very much still into the guy. I don't think this movie gets enough credit for quickly developing real characters that you believe in despite the absurd situations.

She was confused until i explained that there's a weird thing online about people insisting it's a Christmas movie, oddly enough I've never seen it. From what I remember, “Nothing Last Forever” is actually a pretty good book. I read it as a kid after seeing Die Hard. Super tense, pulpy thriller. It’s still weirdly conservative, and it’s technically a sequel to a Frank Sinatra movie (The Detective!), so your narrative throughline is that Sinatra and Bruce Willis played the same weird ex-cop.

A story being couched in the conservative hyper-masculinity of the time doesn't make it or fans part of "toxic masculinity" like Thought Slime keeps implying. People taking hostages is certainly toxic, but someone doing what they have to to save them is not equally evil (or at all). Thought Slime seems to mix a lot of things up and jump to unfair conclusions that, using the same logic... I could call "toxic masculinity".

Ironically the film Die Hard actually portrays healthy forms of masculinity with both Al and John opening up to each other and John needing lots of emotional support.

I like TS thoughts on Toxic Masculinity but I feel like he ignored huge swaths of the movie where the men actual bond in healthy ways. In fact when Al reveals he's unable to shoot his gun (a classic symbol of expressing masculinity) he is not treated as as lesser man. The finale of the film al does shoot his gun but in service of protecting a close friend as opposed to personal glory or "manning up" Al opens up to John about him shooting a kid to gain his trust and John responds to the traumatic story with actual sincerity. In fact Al's big contribution to the plot is being John's emotional anchor. John is "stronger" because he has emotional support of another man. Right before the climax John is actively worried, he legit is afraid he's going to die, he's tired, vulnerable, opens up to his faults and is even crying. In fact Die Hard was cast in a way to contrast the classic "stoic invincible acting guy" trope that was running wild. John Mclain gets hurt, he's overwhelmed, he's legit scared a lot of the times, he gets dirty and complains A LOT. Bruce Willis was cast because he wasn't an action guy and was more believable with looking vulnerable. He expressions emotions besides anger and displays them openly and the film doesn't think less of him.

Perhaps Die Hard has become a post-signifier. More specifically: its significance has gone from that of being a mildly toxic masculine and vicarious experience of power fantasy to that of a shared joke, and in the process has neutralised some of the performativity of its toxicity and replaced it with the performativity of a tired dad joke. In any event I think that the repetition of the joke may have been good for both the legacy of the movie and its audience.

My family watches (or at least did for many years) Scrooged every Christmas and while it has some bad aspects (some raunchy stuff throughout and transphobic stuff in the 11th hour) but I only really realized that it was a way for my parents who, while very lovely people for most of the year, to relate to the bill Murray character who was caustic, derisive but ultimately very lonely both in upbringing and expectations and hide a lot with hurt with humor. Considering what I know that didn’t know then about their family lives growing up (a lot of physical verbal and emotional abuse from their families) makes a lot more sense why they enjoyed it. A story about a man like that who learned a Scrooge type lesson of what charity and love of fellow man is. All wrapped in a comedy that has those sensibles that they were raised with but didn’t try to instill in us growing up.

A Christmas movie is a movie where the plot is directly effected by the holiday throughout the whole movie but you could replace replace Christmas party in die hard with just a work party and everything would be the same thusly it is not representing Christmas as it's theme. It'd be like calling portal an fps because you are in first person and have a weapon that shoots, it just doesn't represent the plot or game mechanics conversely

@@watamatafoyu you're missing the point, idk if willingly. this is about the film choosing to have a hero who is a cop and not super enlightened, while the villain is an intelligent, well spoken individual. it is sending a clear message about how a hero looks like and how a villain looks like and that is suuuuper present as a pattern in a lot of action films.
