He was good at picking things in the environment that already had an abstract quality.

This is fascinating. I have recent begun to work in a semi-abstract, loose way and have been drawn to Debonkorns work for many years. And only in recent weeeks I have started to pain the landscape from a aerial perspective. For many years I worked in aerial photography as an intelligence analyst and here I just found out that Debenkoen was a cartographer! It kind of blew me away.

Interesting that both he and Doreen McNeill were cartographers. She says that he was a great influence on her.

3:50 looks so much like a Wayne Thiebaud painting

The main concept and even sometimes his pallet has been experienced and advanced by Nicolas de Stael in 1950s. Interestingly enough he also turned to figure later on his life but the painter represented here try’s to be pleasant and more graphic to the extend of commercialization. My humble opinion.

Abstract art is one form of the identity crisis produced by the invention of photography. At its best, It can be interesting to look at, but when words are used to discuss it, it becomes ridiculous.
