There are only a handful of films that can be considered perfect. Shawshank is one of them. It's not my personal favourite film, but there's no denying it's probably one of the greatest films ever made, if not the best. A true masterpiece

What I love the most about this film is not only did Andy do everything in his power to right the wrongs done to him, he also made everyone's lives at Shawshank better. He helped the faculty with taxes, built a library to educate the prisoners, changed Red's outlook on life through his friendship and gave him the insight he needed to leave, but most importantly, he got rid of so much corruption and evil going on within the prison, not just for himself but for every "innocent" man in Shawshank. Truly a brilliant film and one of Stephen King's best stories.

It could be a great benchmark for what to watch, though there hasn’t been one yet to surpass it that I haven’t already seen. I know there was the ordeal with _The Dark Knight_ taking the top spot before it was even released, but I was already planning to watch it, anyway, so that wasn’t helpful either.
@TampaCEO
@TampaCEO 7 ай бұрын
@@0okamino The Dark Knight currently sits at #3. I would definitely place it in the top 5 of all time. How did it get there? If you watch "early" Batman with Adam West in the 1960s, it's a comedy. So were the early Batman movies (Michael Keaton is not a serious casting decision as Batman) Lately however, these movies have taken a drastic turn away from their "sillier" roots to a FAR more complex story with amazing actors. When you see Christian Bale, Gary Oldman & Michael Caine in a movie, you know that the filmmakers are going to take the story seriously.
@danielmiller9012

@@riseofazrael It benefited from the war between Dark Knight fans and Godfather fans. After Dark Knight was launched, it was #1 , replacing Godfather, so fans of GF down voted it out of number 1 spot and Godfather got back in.. But then TDK fans downvoted Godfather out of #1 spot, but Shawshank then won the #1 spot from it.

This movie is from the novella, Rita Shawshank and the Shawshank Redemption (each cycle revolves around the change of Andie’s posters. The last is Raquel Welch). Its one of 4 stories from the book, Different Seasons. 3 of the stories from that book were adapted into movies and 2 of them were big hits. The other hit movie from those 4 stories is Stand By Me, which is an adaptation of the story, The Body. A couple of bits of trivia. In the book, Red is a red haired irishman - so its an insider joke in the movie when Andie asks morgan freeman’s Red why he’s called Red and he replies, ‘maybe because Im Irish’. The book ends with Red’s monologue on the bus. That movie monologue is word for word from the book, ending with, ‘i hope’. But test audiences hated the cliffhanger so they added the end scene on the beach.

I don't know many people who aren't affected by this movie and it is bonkers that this was Frank Darabont's first directorial effort. Dude knows how to make a damned movie. The Clancy Brown disrespect was palpable. Adam Baldwin was in Firefly but you may know him from the Full Metal Jacket. The other guy from saving Private Ryan was Tom Sizemore who passed away recently; you may know him from the movies Heat or True Romance. RIP. Clancy Brown who was Captain Hadley in this has been in lot of stuff but most folks these days know him as a voiceover actor from stuff like the evil Star Wars or Sponge Bob as referenced by the editor. He has a glorious voice and is a great actor even when being an evil mf like he is in this.

Strange watching Arianna and Maple reacting to the same movie separately. So accustomed to seeing the two of them together. Nevertheless, you both did a fantastic job reacting to this classic movie. It is on the AFI top 100 of all time list and is studied in many film classes. The title refers not only to the redemption of the institution, but more of Red's redemption rather than Andy's. Always found it ironic that at the very point that Red no longer cared about his parole hearing, that is when they finally released him.

Hope and salvation are the underlying themes of the Shawshank Redemption, and, of course, the Bible is the ultimate source of hope and salvation for all men, which is why the Holy Bible is a another recurring theme throughout the movie. (It is no accident that Andy conceals the rock hammer, which is the instrument by which he achieves his escape and wins his freedom, within the pages of Exodus.) By the way, the redemption is Red’s, not Andy’s. It is Red - the only guilty man in Shawshank - who has lost his hope and faith in mankind during his long years of imprisonment, and in whom hope needs to be rekindled.

I also think friendship is huge too in this
@51tetra69

@@MapleDivine Yes, indeed - you are absolutely correct about that, Maple. Andy's friendship with Red and Brooks was crucial in getting him through his first 19 years of imprisonment, and Andy certainly had the respect and admiration of his other fellow inmates as well. In many ways, Shawshank is a "buddy movie" with friendship at its core.

I've watched a lot of movies. Thank you for your reaction. I was admitted to a mental hospital for attempted suicide. I have dysthymia which is low level depression with periods of deep depression. I watched this movie with another patient when Iwe got out because I've seen it before. She cried and made efforts to better herself. I don't know what happened to her as we lost touch. I hope she's doing ok now. I'm still struggling but I know the consequences of a failed suicide. There are good days and bad days. I try to live my life looking forward to and enjoying the egood days.

Keep hope, I've been there myself (wouldn't presume to have gone through what you have) I'm sure you've heard all of the advice, from many people with great intentions. I can only add my own unsolicited advice: take control of how your thoughts. Specifically, if and when you find yourself being self-critical, recognize it and make a conscious effort to stop it in the moment. You're gonna have to brainwash yourself, at least for a little while. Hope today is a good day for you friend!

Great reaction Maple like always, this is a masterpiece of cinema, A masterclass in pretty much every category. An incredible script, wonderful direction, gorgeous score and phenomenal performances by Freeman and Robbins. Some fun facts about this movie, Stephen King sold the rights for $1,000, The baseball throwing scene took 9 hours The scene where Andy and Red are standing and talking outside whilst Red is throwing a baseball back and forth took a staggering nine hours to film. Morgan Freeman threw the ball endlessly the whole time. The following day, when he arrived at work, his arm was in a sling. Clint Eastwood and Harrison Ford were considered for Red, and Brad Pitt audition for the role of Tommy but he pulled out of the role because of another movie, later Brad Pitt said he regretted that decision. Red’s mugshot is Morgan Freeman’s son , When you see Morgan Freeman’s papers at one of his parole hearings, there are mugshots of a younger Red attached. These are actually photos of Alfonso Freeman - Morgan’s son. He also had a small part in the movie. He was one of the inmates shouting ‘Fresh fish!’ Stephen King’s novella was titled, ‘Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption.’ This was shortened for the film because they didn’t want people to think it was a biopic about Rita Hayworth. This was proven to be true when several actresses applied for the ‘lead role of Rita Hayworth’. Keep up the amazing work.

Red: "So, when Andy Dufresne came to me in 1949 and asked me to smuggle Rita Hayworth into the prison for him, I told him, No problem." Maple: What is that? Me: It's a big building with convicts but that's not important right now.

As to finding buried treasure, I can think of a few ways. Lots of lost cities and shipwrecks and ancient ruins have been found just by carefully searching Google Earth, so that's one good way. Another is metal detecting, because you get that rush of buried treasure everytime you hear a good beep, and once in awhile you really do find little treasures, and it's amazing. And then there's geocaching, which lets you seek out a riddle or clue or just simple coordinates, to find what's hidden there. There isn't usually a monetary incentive, but the adventure is there in finding the treasure. My thoughts.

Clancy's family is pretty fascinating to read about, too. He comes from a very prominent publishing/political family in Ohio. His grandfather and his father were both US Congressmen, and his grandfather was a key person in the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, at the height of the Civil Rights movement. Won't get too deep down the rabbit hole, but he (Clarence Brown) was a major proponent in trying to create more equal rights, anti-lynching laws, etc in the 1920s and 1930s as well.
